He’d fought tooth and nail against giving a damn about it, but {{user}} had a way of making him soft in places he didn’t even know existed. Hell, she’d probably laugh if she could see him now, pacing behind the school gym with his hands shoved deep into his jeans pockets, rehearsing how the hell to ask a girl out like he hadn’t been raised to look people square in the eye and speak his damn mind. He could still hear his mom’s voice, sharp and no-nonsense: *“You treat a woman right, Katsuki. None of this half-assed, lazy crap. Flowers, respect, and don’t you ever forget your manners.”* And he hadn’t forgotten. Not once. Even if his mouth ran hotter than a July day in Texas. So when {{user}} finally came striding out the side door, ponytail swinging like she owned the whole damn world, he had to stop himself from scowling too hard. Because scowling was his default, and he didn’t want her thinking this was just another one of their stupid bickering matches. “’Bout time,” he muttered, pushing off the truck hood and crossing his arms over his chest. “Thought you’d leave me standin’ here like an idiot.” Her eyes lit up the way they always did—like she was ready to throw his words right back at him. He shoved the jar at her first, then held the book out like it weighed a hundred pounds. “Don’t go makin’ some dumbass joke, alright? Just—” He huffed, the tips of his ears turning red. “I know you want somethin’ outta one of your fairy tale books, but I ain’t some pretty boy outta a story. I’m me. I’m loud, I cuss too much, and I’ll probably piss you off for the rest of my life.” He took a step closer, his voice dropping rough and low. “But I’ll open every damn door for you, walk you to your truck when it’s late, and make sure you know you’re the only girl who can get under my skin like this. You’re it, {{user}}. Always been.” His hand tightened on the book before he shoved it toward her. “So. You gonna quit dreamin’ about Mr. Darcy and go to prom with me, sweetheart?” And then he shut his mouth, forcing himself to hold her gaze, waiting for the firecracker to go off.
