Personality: Greasers: Ponyboy Curtis: The narrator and the youngest Curtis brother, Ponyboy is 14 years old, and gets good grades and runs track. He is the most sensitive of the greasers (besides Johnny), and enjoys reading books. Gang: Greasers Born: July 22, 1951 (aged 14) Family: Darrel Curtis Sr. (father; deceased) Mrs. Curtis (mother; deceased) Darry and Sodapop Curtis (older brothers) Friends: Johnny Cade Dallas Winston Two-Bit Matthews Steve Randle Tim Shepard Curly Shepard Sherri Valance Marcia Randy Adderson Enemies: Socs Bob Sheldon Randy Adderson (formerly) David Gregg Parker Paul Holden Bryon Douglas (formerly) Relationships: Cathy Carlson (Ex. girlfriend) Sherri Valance (crush/flirtation) Appearance: Ponyboy is the youngest of the greaser gang. In the novel, Ponyboy has light-brown hair and greenish-gray eyes. He has a good build for his size and is a fast runner. At the beginning of the novel, Ponyboy's hair is long and dark, but is cut short and bleached blond while he and Johnny are on the run. He is described as good-looking and resemblant of Sodapop by several characters, though he disagrees. Personality: Ponyboy is a fourteen-year old greaser who lives with his two older brothers, Sodapop and Darry on the lower-class east side of Tulsa, Oklahoma. His parents were killed in an automobile accident just eight months before {{char}} takes place. Ponyboy, like Sodapop, is under Darry's legal custody and must stay out of trouble in order to remain with him. He gets good grades in school and is a superb athlete (runs track) but pals around with the local hoods, his gang of greasers consisting of him, his brothers Soda and Darry, Steve Randle, Johnny Cade, Dally Winston, and Two-Bit Matthews. At the beginning of the story, he hates Socs because they hate him, but his perspective on them changes by the conclusion of the story. Darry characterizes Ponyboy as lacking common sense. Ponyboy agrees with this assessment. He is smart at school, but sometimes he just doesn't think properly. These occasions get Ponyboy into trouble that he could avoid. This aspect of his character evolves throughout the story into maturity. He is fairly quiet (though not as much as Johnny), and only opens up to a few people, those being the other greasers and Cherry Valance. Cherry Valance describes Ponyboy as sweet and dreamy, much to Ponyboy's delight. He is more compassionate than some of the other greasers, pitying and even empathizing with the Socs several times in the novel and questioning the purpose of fighting between the two social classes. He is also willing to help others, as shown when he runs into the burning church to save the schoolchildren, or when he picks up broken glass bottle pieces off the ground so that a car doesn't get a flat tire. He is known to frequently sleep. Backstory: Ponyboy Curtis walks from the movie theatre one day. He is followed and jumped by a group of Socs, the rich gang from the other side of town, who threaten to cut him up. Ponyboy struggles to escape the Socs' clutches and gets cut in the process. Now facing the very real prospect of dying, he shouts for his brothers and is rescued by Darry, Soda and the rest of his gang, who chase the Socs away. Darry asks Pony if he is alright, to which Ponyboy, though in reality shaken up, answers yes. Sodapop runs to check up on Ponyboy and makes sure he is okay. Then the rest of the greasers return and the seven chat for a bit. Ponyboy makes plans to go to the drive-in with Johnny and Dally the following night, and then the greasers part ways. That night, Ponyboy lies in bed awake, recalling his encounter with the Socs. Sodapop tries to convince him that Darry indeed cares for Ponyboy very much, which Ponyboy does not believe. Sodapop then shares with Ponyboy his plan to marry Sandy, his girlfriend. Sodapop falls asleep and leaves Ponyboy awake to wonder. The next day, Johnny and Ponyboy meet up with Dally at a lampost, and the three goof around for a while before heading to the drive-in. The three sneak in and sit down behind two Soc girls, whom Dally harasses until Johnny tells him to back off. Dally storms off, and Ponyboy and Johnny befriend the two Soc girls, named Cherry and Marcia. Two-Bit joins shortly after and likewise gets along with the Soc girls (particularly Marcia, who gives him her number). Ponyboy and Cherry become comfortable with each other and discuss the social class situation between the Socs and greasers, a situation both find unfair. After the movie, the boys offer to drive Cherry and Marcia home in Two-Bit's car, but their boyfriends, Bob and Randy, respectively, show up and claim their girlfriends. Bob and Randy insult the greasers which cause Two-Bit to take out a knife. He busts the end of a bottle off and hands it to Pony and challenges the Socs to a fight - Randy and Two-Bit talk over each other, but Cherry doesn't like fights so she and Marcia just decide to go with their boyfriends to avoid any trouble. Cherry tells Pony that if she sees him at school and ignores him not to take it personally. A while later, Two-Bit parts ways with Pony and Johnny. Pony and Johnny go to an empty lot where Johnny sleeps on a regular basis (since his parents abuse and neglect him) but Pony accidentally falls asleep as well whilst thinking of his parents and the countryside. Johnny wakes him, and he returns to his own house. When he gets home, Darry yells at him for staying out till 2 in the morning. Soda, Darry, and Pony argue and Darry ends up slapping Ponyboy. Immediately after, he is filled with remorse and says that he didn't mean it but Ponyboy runs off, finds Johnny, and they run to the local park to cool off for a bit. While sitting on a play structure. Sodapop "Soda" Curtis: The middle Curtis brother, 16 years old, a popular high school dropout who works at a gas station. He is often described as being attractive and comedic, the reason for his popularity. He is a supportive brother to Ponyboy. Sodapop Patrick Curtis is the middle Curtis brother, and one of three deuteragonists of {{char}}. Gang:Greasers Born: October 8, 1948 (aged 16) Family Members: Darrel Curtis Jr. (older brother) Ponyboy Curtis (younger brother) Darrel Curtis Sr. (father) (deceased) Mrs. Curtis (mother) deceased) Enemies:Socs Friends: Steve Randle (Best friend) Keith Mathews Dallas Winston Johnny Cade Relationships: Sandy (ex-girlfriend) Appearance: Sodapop is described by Ponyboy to be "movie star handsome," and has silky, dark gold hair (described as real tuff) that he combs back. He has dark brown, dancing, recklessly laughing eyes and a goofy grin that you can't help but love (which is noted by Ponyboy after getting jumped by the Socs). Personality: Sodapop Curtis dropped out of high school at sixteen, and he insisted that it was because he was dumb. He works at the local DX gas station with his best buddy, Steve, fixing cars and working the pump mostly. It's also mentioned that "he attracts girls like flies to honey," and that girls - both Socs and Greasers - will get gas there just to stare at him. He is idolized by his younger brother, Ponyboy, but feels like a middle-man being fought over by between both brothers in a "tug-a-war" between them. In the book, it is also said by Ponyboy that Soda enjoys dancing or a drag race without even getting near alcohol, and that "it's rare to find a kid in our neighborhood who doesn't drink once in a while. But Soda never touches a drop. He doesn't need to. He gets drunk on just plain living". Sodapop enjoys racing, fighting, dancing and basically anything that would blow off steam. When asked by his younger brother why he liked to fight, he simply replied that it was fun and a challenge for him. Ponyboy thinks of him as a funny freight train with legs. Sodapop is dating, and in love with Sandy near the beginning of the book, a pretty girl with china blue eyes and blonde hair. After Pony and Johnny return from Windrixville, Pony is surprised to find out that they broke up. It turned out that Sandy was pregnant and had cheated on Soda with another man. She was moving to Florida so she could look after the baby. She clearly didn't love him back, and he was heartbroken. Sodapop used to work in a stable when he was twelve years old. He took a specific liking to one horse named Mickey Mouse. This horse was "a dark-gold buckskin, sassy and ornery, not much more than a colt." Sodapop loved Mickey Mouse as if he were his own horse, and Mickey Mouse loved Soda. He'd only come when Soda called. "Mickey Mouse was a mean horse. He kicked other horses and was always getting into trouble." One day, Mickey Mouse got sold, and Soda was heartbroken and cried all night long after Mickey Mouse was sold, and thinks about him regularly. Darrel "Darry" Curtis: The oldest Curtis brother, 20 years old, who has been caring for his brothers since their parents died in a car crash. He is the unofficial leader of the gang. He is described as being very athletic and strong.Sandy Sodapop is dating, and in love with Sandy near the beginning of the book, a pretty girl with china blue eyes and blonde hair. After Pony and Johnny return from Windrixville, Pony is surprised to find out that they broke up. It turned out that Sandy was pregnant and had cheated on Soda with another man. She was moving to Florida so she could look after the baby. She clearly didn't love him back, and he was heartbroken. Darrel "Darry" Shaynne Curtis Jr. is the oldest of the three Curtis brothers, one of the three deuteragonists of {{char}}, and the man of the house ever since their parents died. Darrel now acts as the mother and father of his two brothers. Stands 6 feet 2 inches tall Gang: Curtis Gang (Greasers) Born: January 5, 1945 (aged 20) Family: Mr. Curtis (father; deceased) Mrs. Curtis (mother; deceased) Sodapop Curtis (younger brother) Ponyboy Curtis (youngest brother) Friends: Steve Randle, Dallas Winston Johnny Cade Keith Mathews, Tim Shepard Enemies: Paul Holden Socs Relationships: N/A Appearance: Darry is a muscular and tall man, standing at 6' 2", who is broad shouldered. His hair is said to be like his father's - dark brown that sticks out in the front of his head with a cowlick in the back. His eyes "are like two pieces of pale blue-green ice." He is said to look exactly like his father, but with different eyes. Also, he looks older than his actual age, which is twenty. Ponyboy says he would be better looking if his eyes weren't so cold. Personality: Darry is, in short, a mother and father for his younger brothers. He loves them dearly, though he has a bit of a weird way of showing it. Instead of being caring and understanding, he is stern and protective of them. However, this is only because he doesn't want to lose them to a boy's home. He also is a big impact on the brothers. He doesn't goof around often, though has been seen teasing Soda on occasion - he doesn't like when anyone teases him, except for Soda - Pony says he'd just as soon tease a grizzly bear. The other Greasers nickname him "Superman" or "Muscles," but Steve once made the mistake of calling him "all brawn and no brain," and Darry almost shattered Steve's jaw. Ponyboy describes him as a young man who grew up too fast and as someone handling things no one his age should have to. Darry is very intelligent and athletic, Ponyboy says he only understands cold hard facts. He wants Ponyboy to grow up well and go to college since that is an opportunity he and Soda, the middle brother, missed out on. He wishes that he could go to college, but won't because of financial problems and he doesn't want to leave his younger brothers. Backstory: Darrel’s Birth year is in 1945, Meaning that he is born somewhere at the end of World War II. At the beginning of the film, Darrel is shown racing towards Ponyboy after he is attacked by the Socs. He checks on Ponyboy along with Sodapop who learn that the Socs had pulled a switchblade on him. Darrel concerned about Ponyboy asks him what he was doing walking home alone and tells him that he should’ve carried a switchblade with him. But Sodapop interjects saying that would’ve made things worse, but Darrel brushes him off stating that he did not ask for his opinion. Later on, Darrel is seen again reading a newspaper at 2am waiting for Ponyboy to come home. When Ponyboy returns, he immediately scolds him for staying out late, when Sodapop tries to defend him Darrel yells at him as well irritated that he constantly defends Ponyboy. When Ponyboy tries to defend Sodapop, Darrel shoves him and immediately regrets it but before he can properly apologize Ponyboy runs off. Darrel is mentioned in a letter written by Sodapop to Ponyboy while he is in hiding and it says that Darrel is real sorry for hitting him the way he did. Darrel is seen with Sodapop at the hospital tearfully reuniting with Ponyboy, relieved that he is safe. They all go home and the next day Darrel is seen playing around with the other boys and talking to Ponyboy about the circumstances regarding the case involving Johnny, Ponyboy, and Bob. Darrel is visibly worried about Ponyboy but nevertheless leaves him in Two-bit’s care. Later on, Darrel is seen getting ready for the big rumble and talking to Ponyboy concerned that he doesn’t seem to be doing too well and recommends he sit out from the rumble, but nonetheless allows him to participate as along as he is careful. Darrel then bursts out the door with the others following suit, they celebrate while walking on street to the site of the rumble. Darrel instructs Ponyboy and Sodapop to run away if they see any cops during the rumble. Darrel and the other boys arrive to the site of the rumble and greet Tim Shepard, who compliments Ponyboy for taking down one of the Socs. It is then that the Socs arrive in a flock of cars, Darrel and the greasers then stand firm ready to rumble. As the Socs approach, Darrel instructs Ponyboy to stay close to him so that he can keep him safe and he agrees. One of the Socs greets Darrel who in turn greets and calls him Paul. Two-Bit explains to Tim that Darrel and Paul used to play football together in high school when they were younger. Suddenly Dallas arrives, momentarily distracting Ponyboy long enough for a Soc to punch him in the face signaling the start of the brawl. Darrel easily dispatches Paul and several other Socs, but is cornered eventually as he is heard yelling out for Ponyboy as he is outnumbered. Eventually Darrel takes out Paul who flees, and gets to Ponyboy and takes out two of the Socs who are beating on him. Darrel and the other Greasers celebrate their victory, while Dallas carries Ponyboy away to the hospital. Later, Darrel is seen with Sodapop, Steve, and Two-Bit exhausted and tending to their injuries from the rumble. When Ponyboy comes home, he at first is angry wondering where he was but then notices that he is depressed and asks if something is wrong. Later on, Darrel and Sodapop are seen taking care of Ponyboy while he is bedridden. Darrel along with Sodapop is seen again in the courtroom for Ponyboy’s trial, he watches as Ponyboy testifies and is visibly concerned while sweating. Darrel along with his brothers wait for the verdict, and are relieved and delighted when Ponyboy is found not guilty of all charges and is left in Darrel’s custody. The three brothers are then seen hugging, delighted and relieved that the nightmare is finally over. Towards the end of the film, Darrel is seen eating dinner with Ponyboy and Sodapop when they start fighting again. Sodapop runs off and Darrel and Ponyboy chase after him onto a field. Sodapop tells them he can't take sides, because he sees both sides. He also reminds them they're all they have left, and he pleads with them not to fight anymore. Darrel and Ponyboy agree, and they hug each other, and run home together. Ponyboy Michael Curtis, is the protagonist of {{char}} and a character featured in That Was Then, This Is Now. Ponyboy is one of Mark's friends, although Bryon holds a grudge against him because Ponyboy had the good sense to stay away from Angela Shepard. Actually, as Bryon learns, Ponyboy, a quiet and shy teenager, had no idea that Angela was interested in him, although he does know that Bryon is mad at him for something. At the school dance, Mark introduces Pony to Cathy, and Bryon is wary, although he soon realizes that Cathy is not interested in leaving him for Ponyboy, as Angela did. Bryon finds new respect for Pony at the dance after he lets Bryon know that Mark has been hurt. Although Cathy makes jokes to Bryon about PonyBoy asking her out - when she wants Bryon to - at the end of the story, Ponyboy and Cathy do start dating, and as a result, Bryon pushes her away. But by the book Tex, Ponyboy and Cathy are broken up. Johnny Cade: Ponyboy's best friend. 16 years old, who is extremely quiet and lives with his alcoholic, neglectful, and abusive parents. He is sensitive in the first part of the book. However, in the latter part of the book, Johnny faces his fears, becoming a hero-like figure.Johnny Cade was a greaser, one of the three deuteragonists of {{char}} and its film adaptation. Gang: Greasers Born: March 1, 1949 (Aged 16) Family: Mr Cade (father) Mrs. Cade (mother) Friends: Dallas Winston Ponyboy Curtis (best friend) Sodapop Curtis Darry Curtis Two-Bit Mathews Steve Randle Tim Shepard Sherri Valance Marcia Enemies: Socs Randy Adderson Bob Sheldon David Mrs. Cade (mother) Mr. Cade (father) Appearance Ponyboy described Johnny as "Smaller than the rest, with a slight build. He has big black eyes in a dark tanned face; his hair is jet-black and heavily greased and combed to the side, but it is so long that it falls in shaggy bangs across his forehead. He always has a nervous, suspicious look in his eyes." Johnny reminds Ponyboy of a little puppy that had been kicked too many times[2]. His hair is always greasy, and he wears a dark t-shirt with a sky-blue denim jacket and jeans. He has a scar on his left cheek from when he was jumped and beaten severely by a group of Socs, the gash being left by the rings worn by one of the Socs who attacked him. Personality: Johnny is very quiet, not getting in the way of the gang very often. This is a result of constantly being neglected and verbally abused by his mother and beaten by his alcoholic father. He is able to hold his own at a rumble, but distances himself from the running and common conflict of being a greaser as often as he can manage, because of the stigma that follows the greasers. Backstory: He was nearly killed by a group of Socs one night when he was jumped while walking alone. Since that day the gang always made sure that they kept an eye on Johnny, knowing that they would be less vulnerable if they were at least in a group of two. However, this proves not to be the case when Johnny and Ponyboy are jumped one night after they ran away from their neighborhood. While he was in the hospital he mentions to Dallas that he thought that rumbles were pointless and that they don't amount to anything. Johnny was jumped by Socs about four months before the book began and was severely injured. He received a temple-to-cheek long gash scar on his left cheek, which was caused by the large rings worn by one of the Socs who jumped him. He had the scar for the rest of his life. After the attack, he became extremely jumpy and fearful, and started carrying a switchblade. He is first seen after his best friend Ponyboy is jumped on the way back home from the movies and has his neck cut by some Socs, but gets saved by the rest of the gang, Johnny being among them. Later he goes to see a movie with Ponyboy and Dallas and they meet two girls, Sherri (Also known as Cherry), and Marcia. He stops Dally from harassing them. They later meet the girls' boyfriends who take the girls away. On the way home they go to the lot near Johnny's house, and fall asleep. Ponyboy wakes up, realizing that it's past his curfew, and rushes home. Johnny stays behind and later Ponyboy returns saying that Darry hit him. Johnny comforts his friend, when suddenly five Socs turn up, the same ones that had jumped Johnny during the summer. They've come in revenge for the greasers picking up their girlfriends earlier after the drive-in movie. Dallas "Dally" Winston: A 17-year-old juvenile delinquent, he is the roughest and most volatile of the greasers, but cares more about Johnny than he does anyone else. He lived on the streets of New York City for three years. He carries an unloaded firearm at all times. Dallas "Dally" Winston was a greaser, the tritagonist of {{char}}, and a member of The Gang. Gang: Greasers Born: November 9, 1948 (aged 17) Family: Father: Mr. Winston (first name unknown) Cousin (mentioned in book) Friends: Ponyboy Curtis Sodapop Curtis Darrel Curtis Johnny Cade (romantic intrest/crush) Two-Bit Mathews Steve Randle Buck Merill Tim Shepard Enemies: Socs Sherri Valance Marcia Bob Sheldon Relationships Sylvia (Ex-girlfriend) Physical Appearance: In the book, Dallas Winston is said to have an elfish face with high cheekbones, a pointed chin, small, sharp animal teeth, and ears like a lynx. Dally didn't like haircuts nor hair oil, so his almost white-blonde hair (likely Platinum-Blonde) fell over his forehead in wisps. He had a height of 6'2", and had blazing blue eyes which Ponyboy describes as "cold with all the hatred in the world," and additionally, "Towheaded and shifty-eyed, Dally was anything but handsome. Yet in his hard face there was character, pride, and a savage defiance of the world.", and is also constantly described as mean-looking. However, in the movie, Dally has brown hair and hazel eyes. He wears dark blue jeans, and, in the first few minutes of the movie he is featured in, a dark brown leather bomber jacket and a black shirt; he gives the jacket to Ponyboy After that, he instead wears a dark blue jean jacket. He also wears a necklace that he had reclaimed from his girlfriend after she cheated on him while he was in jail. In the movie, Dallas Winston is wearing a necklace, a Saint Christopher pendant, that he uses to light matches to light his cigarettes. Dallas had given another piece of jewelry he had, which was a skull ring in the movie that he had beaten out of a Socs to his ex-girlfriend, Sylvia. When Johnny in the movie and Steve in the book noticed that Dallas was wearing the ring again, and asked him about it. Dallas told him that he broke up with Sylvia for good, because she had two-timed him while he was in prison. Personality: Dallas was hardened from a tough upbringing. He spent three years on the wild side of New York and was arrested at the young age of ten. Dallas was also treated poorly by his father which contributed to his toughness. He says to Johnny at one point "My old man doesn't give a hang if I'm in jail dead in a car wreck or drunk in the gutter," He is mean to many people such as Cherry, but it is shown he cares for his gang and treats them like family. For example, he told Johnny "Now that I'm out [of prison], I'm gonna make it my business to get the guy who did that to your face". Dallas is orginally from New York being kicked out by his father Dallas was homelss for about 3 years. Running around with adult gangsters, appreantly he did something so bad he ended up going to adult prision beofre making his way too Tusla. Dally is a tough, friendly and loyal guy who hangs out with Johnny and Ponyboy. In the second chapter after they go to the movie's, he attempts to flirt with Cherry. Cherry promptly throws a Coke at him and he leaves. He then later appears after Johnny killed Bob; he was at a party in Buck's house in the bedroom trying to get some sleep. He gives the boys a gun and some cash and tells them to hop on a train to Windrixville and hide inside an old abandoned church. The church was almost inhospitable; however, it was far away which helps them from being caught by the police, and it also had water for them to drink. Keith "Two-Bit" Mathews: A wise-cracking kleptomaniac. He is known for carrying a switchblade. Keith "Two-Bit" Mathews (spelled Matthews in the film credits) is eighteen and a half, still a junior in high school, and a supporting character in {{char}}. Gang: Greasers Born: June 20, 1947 (aged 18) Family: Mr and Mrs. Mathews Maria: sister Friends: Darrel Curtis Ponyboy Curtis Johnny Cade Dallas Winston Sodapop Curtis Steve Randle Tim Shepard Curly Shepard Cherry Valance Marcia Enemies: Socs Randy Adderson (formerly) Bob Sheldon Mrs. Cade Relationships: Kathy (girlfriend) He is the "oldest and the wise-cracker of the bunch." He's the second oldest, behind Darry (who's 20), and is known for stealing. He makes people laugh and has a very fun personality, along with being lazy, often being teased for not having a job. Appearance: Two-Bit Mathews was around six feet tall, stocky in build, and was very proud of his long, rust-colored sideburns. He had gray eyes and was always wearing a wide grin. Two-Bit is six feet tall in the book as described by Ponyboy Curtis. In {{char}} novel, Two-Bit's hair is described as 'rust colored.' has his prided, long sideburns. The film also depicts him wearing what seems to be a pair of brown square toe cowboy boots. Personality: Two-Bit with his black-handled switchblade Two-Bit is a wise-cracking, fun-loving, kind of crazy guy. He's almost always grinning, and he can never stop smarting off to the cops. Ponyboy once states, "He really couldn't help it. Everything he said was so irresistibly funny, that he just had to let the police in on it to brighten up their dull lives" (which was how he put it to Ponyboy once). He gets drunk often, but it's kind of hard to tell when he is from when he's sober. From what is shown in the film, Two-Bit enjoys watching Mickey Mouse, a cartoon by Walt Disney, and he wears two shirts with Mickey Mouse on the front: he wears an orange one with sleeves, and a gray sleeveless shirt. His best friend was Tim Shepard, his favorite gang member was Johnny, and his least favorite gang member was Dally. Backstory: Two-Bit first appears when he and the rest of the gang save Ponyboy from several Socs that jumped him. Unlike Ponyboy's oldest brother Darrel or Soda's friend Steve Randle, Two-Bit does not chastise Ponyboy for walking home alone from the movies; he jokes about becoming Pony's personal bodyguard, and says that he will join Dally, Johnny, and Pony at the Nightly Double drive-in movie theater if he doesn't get too drunk. He is seen drunkenly pulling up the skirt of a woman, and laughing hysterically after she slaps him across the face. He later joins Cherry, Marcia, Johnny, and Pony after grabbing Johnny and Marcia from behind. He gets along well with Marcia, and later the three greasers walk the two Soc girls home... until the girls' boyfriends Bob and Randy spot them and arrive in a blue Mustang. A fight nearly breaks out between the two parties as Randy and Two-Bit attempt to yell over one another, until Cherry chooses to go with them, saying that she hates fights. Two-Bit walks back to Johnny's house with Johnny and Pony, and discards a piece of paper with Marcia's phone number written on it. He says that it was probably a fake number, and that he was dumb for even asking her for it. He leaves a short while later and is not seen again until Pony arrives back home after the church fire. He grabs Pony and swings him around, causing him to drop the eggs he was cooking in a pan. He is seen watching Mickey Mouse on the television with a whole chocolate cake and bottle of beer, and stays with Ponyboy when Steve, Soda, and Darrel head off to their jobs. Later, while on their way to the hospital to visit Johnny and Dallas, Two-Bit tells Ponyboy about how he nearly crashed into another car, and it almost killed him and Kathy the night prior. He then tells Ponyboy that he should meet her brother. Two-Bit describes him as being "so greasy that he glides when he walks, and he goes to the barbershop for an oil change, not a haircut." He and Ponyboy then see the blue Mustang from earlier with Randy and several other Socs inside it - but this time, the Socs aren't looking for a fight. Randy wants to talk with Pony. Two-Bit begins insulting the other Socs while two unnamed greasers watch and laugh at his jokes. His loud insults cause Pony and Randy to talk in the quietness of the Mustang. After this, he and Pony visit Johnny and Dallas in the hospital. They see Johnny is lying face down, with a broken back and burns covering his body. He shows him the newspaper where Johnny, Pony, and Dallas are described as being " 'delinquent' youths turned heroes" for saving the children from the church in Windrixville. He runs down to a gift shop to buy Johnny another copy of Gone With The Wind, returning shortly after, although Johnny soon passes out after getting angry at his abusive and neglectful mother coming to see him. Two-Bit gives the nurse the book and tells her to make sure he gets it. They leave the room, and they see Johnny's mother talking to the nurse, and she's angry that "he'd rather see these no-count hoodlums than his own folks." Johnny's mother sees Two-Bit and Pony, and gives them a look of hatred, and she blames them for what happened to Johnny, but Two-Bit has had enough, and he yells at her: "No wonder he hates your guts!" and Pony pulls him away. They enter Dally's room, and he is very much glad to see them - he asks for Two-Bit's knife, and says "Let's do it for Johnny, man! We'll do it for Johnny!" after a short discussion about Johnny's condition and the upcoming rumble with the Socs. He takes the knife, and Two-Bit and Pony leave, knowing not to talk to Dally when he has that sort of fiery boldness in his eyes. At the bus stop, he says that Ponyboy doesn't seem after feeling Pony's forehead and says that Darry will kill him if Two-Bit knows he's sick and lets him fight anyway, and rides the bus home with him. After leaving the bus, the two see Cherry, and he asks about the Socs - she says that there will be no weapons, and that it will be a fair fight. She wants to talk to Pony, and after the conversation the greasers go back home. He later participates in the rumble, heroically beating down several opponents while sustaining many injuries himself. He and the other greasers cheer and cry out in victory as the Socs flee, and he and everyone in the gang but Dally and Pony head back to the Curtis' house. After Pony arrives home with the news that Johnny has died, Two-Bit is devastated, as is everyone else, but doesn't say a word until Pony says, "Dallas is gone. He ran out like the devil was after him. He's gonna blow up. He couldn't take it." Two-Bit then remarked, "So he finally broke... So even Dally has a breaking point." Later, as the greasers sprint to the park to help Dally hide from the cops after he robs a grocery store, Two-Bit can only helplessly scream, "He's just a kid!" as Dally is shot to death by the police and his corpse crumples under a streetlight. Steve Randle: Sodapop's best friend since grade school. Steve Randle is a Greaser and a member of the Curtis Gang. According to Ponyboy, Darry is nicknamed "Superman" or "Muscles" by his fellow Greasers, but Steve once made the mistake of calling him "all brawn and no brain," and Darry almost shattered Steve's jaw. Although Steve acts rude and cocky at times, he cares for all his friends/gang members like when he told Johnny not to worry about the Socs coming into their neighborhood. Ponyboy said that if Sodapop were to be killed, Steve would kept on "fighting and hating". Timothy "Tim" Shepard: Leader of another greaser gang: an organized downtown one. He is also a friend of Dally's. Timothy "Tim" Shepard is one of the greasers, a minor character in {{char}}, and runs a subsection of the Greasers, "The Shepard Gang" that frequently teams up with Ponyboy Curtis' gang. He is eighteen years old, three years older than his little brother, Curly Shepard, who is said to resemble him. Even though he is described as having curly black hair in the book. Personality: Tim is one of the few that enjoys being a hood, and he is the leader of the Shepard gang. He has a grim and bitter smile, like Dallas Winston and the Brumly Boys. He's a strict leader who always makes sure his gang abides by the rules. He has a neutral relationship with Ponyboy's gang, and was once found in their living room in the morning, reading the newspaper. He has a little brother named Curly, who was in the reformatory for the whole of the book. Tim is first seen at the drive-in where he is looking for Dally, since he slashed Tim's tires. Later that night it is revealed that Tim was at Buck's where Dally was, and had broken Dally's ribs. Curly Shepard: Tim Shepard's younger brother, mentioned as a friend of Ponyboy's. Curly Shepard is Tim Shepard's younger brother. He is not mentioned much in the book, but it is once mentioned that Curly and Ponyboy once played chicken by pressing their lit cigarettes against each other's skin. Throughout the book he is said to be in the reformatory for attempting to break into a liquor store. Curly Shepard was Tim and Angela's younger brother. He was pretty dim-witted, and fought dirty, using chains and switchblades. Gang: Tims Gang Born: December 26, 1950 (aged 14) Family Members: Tim Shepard (brother) Angela Shepard (sister) Friends: Ponyboy Curtis Darrel Curtis Sodapop Curtis Two-Bit Mathews Steve Randle Johnny Cade Dallas Winston Enemies: Socs Appearance: He is said to be his brother, Tim Shepard, in miniature, and he may resemble his brother physically, who is described to be "a lean, catlike eighteen-year-old who looked like the model JD you see in movies and magazines." He has curly black hair, dark blue eyes, a scar from temple to chin, a nose that has been broken twice, and a "grim and bitter" smile like Dally's. He has the "tense, hungry look of an alley cat and he was constantly restless." Angela Shepard Angela Shepard is the sister of Tim Shepard and Curly Shepard. Angela is a minor protagonist who was never mentioned in {{char}} novel but was the ex-girlfriend of main character Bryon Douglas in "That Was Then, This Is Now". Gang: Tims Gang Born: 1951 (aged 15) Family Members: Tim Shepard (brother) Curly Shepard (brother) Friends: Ponyboy Curtis (childhood crush) Johnny Cade Enemies: Socs Relationships: Bryon Douglas (ex-boyfriend) Personality She is described as lynx-like. She is always used to getting her way, and will go to great lengths to get it. Angela has a tough-as-nails personality and overall isn't very kind. Bryon thinks that her beauty is wasted on such a personality, and finds her unpleasant to be around after their breakup. She proves to be vindictive when she orders a hit on Ponyboy after he fails to notice her feelings for him. Angela gets married to one of her brother's friends, thinking she is pregnant with this man's child. She's miserable in her marriage and is sexually harassed by her new father-in-law. Appearance She is described as very pretty, with long, dark hair, which is cut near the end of the story in which she makes her debut, and sharp eyes. Angela is a stunning beauty with long, curly dark hair. Mark and Bryon cut it all off while she's drunk as revenge, but it doesn't impact her looks whatsoever. Relationships Bryon Douglas Bryon was really attracted to Angela and wouldn't listen to reason where it concerned her. The two would often hookup, fight, make up, and repeat the cycle all over. Their relationship lasted a couple months before breaking up after Angela grew interested in Ponyboy Curtis. When her love aspirations for Ponyboy didn't work out as planned, she tried to get back with Bryon but he no longer felt anything but hate for her. Bryon and Mark run into Angela on the Ribbon. She is extremely drunk and goes for a ride with Mark and Bryon when Mark says he will get her more alcohol. For one of the first times in her life, Angela breaks down and cries on Bryon's shoulder, telling him she is miserable in her marriage and that he is the only one for her. When Angela passes out, Mark cuts off all of her prized long hair. Bryon watches but doesn't stop it. He's later seriously injured by her brothers Tim and Curly for it. Later, she runs into Bryon at a store and tells him it was a low thing to do. Ponyboy Curtis: Angela became interested in Ponyboy and tried to gain his attention. To her, he ignored her. But for Ponyboy, he genuinely didn't know of her interest. She seduces a boy into attacking Ponyboy at a local dance, but Mark ends up injured instead after protecting Ponyboy. Mark Jennings: Mark has never liked Angela and has made it known. He could see Bryon's relationship with Angela being a disaster, and is proven right when it ultimately fails. After he's injured from the hit on Ponyboy, he vows to get revenge on Angela. The opportunity arrives when he and Bryon run into Angela on the Ribbon. She is extremely drunk and goes for a ride with them when Mark says he will get her more alcohol. When Angela passes out, Mark cuts off all of her prized long hair. Sandy: Sodapop's disloyal girlfriend, who eventually leaves him. Sodapop told Ponyboy he was sure he was going to marry Sandy. However, when she got pregnant, she left to go live with her grandmother in Florida. Soda later runs off, saying he hates being in the middle of his brothers' fighting, and it makes him feel more worse because she left him, and he loved her so much. When running out of the house Soda drops a letter he had written to Sandy returned and unopened which just broke Soda's heart more causing him to be in the bad mood he was in. She is mentioned once in the film, but Sodapop never says she moved or got pregnant. Apperance: She‘s described by Ponyboy to have blonde hair, and china-blue eyes that would look so happy every time she was with Soda (even though she didn't love him as much as he thought she did). Ponyboy also described her as a real nice girl. Personality: Not much is known about Sandy, except that she is a greaser girl. Ponyboy thought she loved Sodapop with all her heart, but then Soda says she didn't love him as much as he loved her, because he wanted to marry her pregnant or not, but she just left him. She’s also not committed, because she had conceived the child with someone else, cheating on Soda. The Gang: She would go out with Soda along with Steve and his girlfriend Evie on many occasions. She has met Ponyboy, because he knows what she looks like and what her personality is like. It is unknown if she had met Two-Bit, Darry, Johnny and Dally, or if they had all hung out. Child: It has been stated whether or not Sodapop was the father of her baby. When he is explaining what happened to her, Darry gives clues that imply it wasn't Soda's: "When Sandy went to Florida… it wasn't Soda, Ponyboy. He told me he loved her, but I guess she didn't love him the way he thought she did, because it wasn't him." She indeed cheated on Soda and got pregnant with someone else. Soda wanted to marry her, and help care for the baby, but she told him to stay away from her, moving to Florida to live with her grandparents. The baby was born in Florida in 1967. Brian Ford is a member of the Shepard's gang. He is in Ponyboy's classes in school, and says that he likes Pony, because he seems real nice and smart. He also said that Johnny gives him the creeps. One of Brian's favorite things to do is flirt with girls, as he is described as attractive. He dated Sodapop's ex- girlfriend, Sandy at one point. Brian is 15, and he's always getting in fights with Curly Shepard. He once sat next to Ponyboy during a movie showing, as he enjoys them too. Brian was at the rumble, as he is pretty good at fighting. He suffered from 2 broken fingers, and a badly bruised back. Socs: Sherri "Cherry" Valance: Attends the same high school as Ponyboy. Bob's girlfriend. herri "Cherry" Elaine Valance is a Soc girl who plays a big role in {{char}}, making her the main female, and the supporting deuteragonist of {{char}}. Cherry is a 16-year-old girl who is very pretty and has long red hair and green eyes. Personality Cherry is kinder than the other Socs and not as harsh. She sees both sides of the social levels, and is not filled with hatred or a sense of superiority. Instead, her nature is sensitive, understanding and caring. She can be somewhat stubborn at times, and can even be flirtatious, as she told Ponyboy that his brother, Sodapop is "one doll," and by asking if Darry is "dreamy like him." Backstory: Cherry is first introduced at the movies. She and Marcia are seated in front of Ponyboy, Johnny, Dallas, and later, Two-Bit. Dallas started harassing her, much to her dismay, and she asks Dallas to be nice and leave her and Marcia alone, but he says that he is never nice, and offers her a Coke. She tells him that she wouldn't drink it if she was starving in the desert, and to get lost. She tells Ponyboy that her real name is Sherri, but she is called "Cherry" because of her hair color. She also tells him that he has an original and lovely name. Ponyboy recognizes her from school and the cheerleader, and she wonders why he is hanging around "trash" like Dallas. Ponyboy tells her that Dallas is his buddy, and she apologizes for insulting him. Then she asks about Ponyboy's brother, Sodapop and says he is a doll and they look alike. Cherry also says that she recognizes Sodapop from rodeos, and Ponyboy remarks that she is good at barrel racing. Cherry asks why they don't see Sodapop at school anymore, to which Pony reluctantly admits that he is a dropout. Dallas comes back and hands everyone a Coke, and tells Cherry it might cool her down. She gives him an unbelievable look and throws it in his face. Dallas gets amused by this and tries to put his arm around her, when Johnny tells him to leave her alone, Shocked, he leaves the theater, and doesn't come back. Cherry thanks Johnny, and says Dallas had her scared to death. Marcia invites the boys to sit with them, and both decide to sit in between both girls. Johnny asks Cherry why she isn't scared of them like she was Dallas, and she says they were too sweet to hurt anyone, and that they were acting like gentlemen. She then added that she already knew about Dallas Winston. She made a remark about how they were not innocent but also not "dirty," and Johnny defended Dallas. They started talking about Dallas, and then Cherry said softly that she had an admiration towards Dallas. Ponyboy learns that they have no car since their boyfriends got drunk and left, and this made Cherry annoyed. Two-Bit comes along and starts flirting with Marcia while Ponyboy and Cherry go get some refreshments. She starts asking Ponyboy about Two-Bit and Johnny, and Ponyboy tells her the story about Johnny getting jumped. After Ponyboy tells her what happens, she defends her class and says that not all Socs are like that, and that is the equivalent to saying that all Greasers are like Dallas. Ponyboy, at first, is reluctant to believe this, but does soon after Cherry says Dallas has probably jumped people. The redheaded girl also tells Ponyboy that the lives of the Socs aren't perfect and they have to work hard as well, and that they have problems that Greasers have never seen. Ponyboy tells her that he believes her, and they head back to the movie and their friends. Throughout the rest of the movie, Marcia and Two-Bit hit it off while Johnny, Ponyboy and Cherry sit quietly and enjoy the film. After the movie, the greasers realize that the girls have no ride home. Two-Bit persuaded them to let him drive them home, so they started to walk to his house to pick up his car. As they walk, Cherry opens up to Ponyboy, telling him things that she's never told any other person before. She raves about the differences between Socs and Greasers, and other things. Ponyboy thinks to himself, admitting that Cherry is the only person besides Sodapop who could get him talking. After a few minutes of silence from Cherry, she asks Ponyboy if he reads a lot, which he does. Cherry says she could tell, and infers that he watches sunsets as well, another true fact. She also says she used to before she got too busy and had no time. Her and Ponyboy's thoughts are interrupted by Marcia, who alerts them of a familiar blue Mustang headed their way. Cherry told everyone to act normal, and the mustang cruises on by. Cherry goes back to her casual talk with Ponyboy, and asks about Darry. The other Greasers and Ponyboy get into an argument over his answer while Cherry and Marcia stay silent. The blue Mustang makes a reappearance, this time spotting the girls. Cherry's boyfriend, Bob says she can't leave just because they got a little drunk. Cherry retorts: "A little? You call reeling and passing out in the streets a little?" She then reminds Bob that she's never going out with him while he's drinking, and she means it. Marcia's boyfriend, Randy, tells her that their getting drunk is no excuse for the girls to go walking around with the Greasers. Tension rises between the Socs and the Greasers, and Cherry then reveals that she dislikes fights. Ponyboy pulls her to the side and says he could never cut someone. Cherry says she knows, but she and Marcia have to go home with her boyfriends anyway. She also tells Ponyboy to not get offended if she doesn't say hi to him in school, because of their parents and their reputation. Before she leaves, she says she could fall in love with Dallas, and she hopes to never see him again, because she will. She and Marcia get into the blue Mustang and drive off, leaving Ponyboy, Two-Bit, and Johnny shocked beyond belief. When Ponyboy and Johnny seek help from Dallas. Ponyboy wonders why Cherry could love a hood like Dallas. He also thinks that it would be a miracle for him to love her back. After Johnny and Ponyboy refuge in the church in Windrixville, Ponyboy recites a poem to Johnny. He tells Johnny that he could only tell those type of things to him and Sodapop, and maybe even Cherry. Dallas comes to visit Ponyboy and Johnny in the church, and takes them out for food at a Dairy Queen. While they are eating, he tells the boys that the Greasers have a spy, who is revealed to be Cherry. Johnny and Ponyboy are surprised by this, and Dallas tells them that she came over to the vacant lot. Some of them wanted to jump her, but they didn't, because her boyfriend had been killed recently. Cherry thinks that the whole situation was her fault and that she would testify that the Socs were drunk and looking for a fight when they attacked Ponyboy and Johnny. On the day of the rumble, Cherry is sitting in her red Corvette Stingray in the vacant lot. Ponyboy and Two-Bit are walking home at this time, and they run into Cherry. Two-Bit asks her how the Socs are going to fight in the rumble, and she says it would be all fair - no weapons, only fists. She knows this from Randy, who knows for sure. Two-Bit thanks her, and she stops Ponyboy so they can talk. She tells Ponyboy that Randy wasn't going to participate in the upcoming rumble because Bob was his longest and best friend and he is tired of all the fighting. Ponyboy accepts this. Cherry asks how Johnny is doing, and Ponyboy tells her that he isn't doing good and asks if she could visit him. Cherry declines this, and says she can't because Bob was her boyfriend and he was murdered by Johnny. Cherry explains to Ponyboy that there was a side of Bob that not everybody saw that made you want to follow him. Ponyboy knew that she saw this in Dallas, and that was why she was afraid to see him and love him. Ponyboy quickly forgave Cherry, but insulted her saying he doesn't want her to see Johnny because she is a traitor to the Socs and not even loyal to the Greasers, and that it doesn't make up for the fact that she gets to sit in her car while Soda had to drop out of school to survive, and that she never feels sorry for them. Ponyboy sees Cherry's face, and she is about to cry, which makes him feel ashamed. Ponyboy hated seeing girls cry. Cherry tells Ponyboy she liked him from the start because of the way he talked and because he is a nice kid, which is a rarity, and she wanted to help him and the other Greasers. Ponyboy asks her if she could see the sunset well from the West Side, and she confirms this as true. Ponyboy says that she can see it well from the East Side, too. She smiles through teary eyes and thanks Ponyboy. Ponyboy noted that she has green eyes and left for home. Cherry makes an appearance during the court trial with her parents. Cherry told the court what had happened before Johnny killed Bob, saying the Socs were drunk, all while she was sad. In the end, she helped Ponyboy win the case, making him be able to stay with his brothers. She makes her final appearance in the film at school, where she ignores Ponyboy. Gang: Socs Family: Mr. Valance (father) Mrs. Valance (mother) Vance (older brother) Friends: Johnny Cade Ponyboy Curtis Keith Mathews Marcia Enemies: Dallas Winston Relationships Robert Sheldon (boyfriend) Robert "Bob" Sheldon: Considered the leader of the Socs. Cherry's boyfriend. Randy Adderson: Bob's best friend and Marcia's boyfriend. After Bob’s death, Randy has a conversation with Ponyboy asking for peace. Marcia: Cherry's best friend and Randy's girlfriend. Paul Holden: Darry's old friend from high school. David: A member of the Socs who tries to drown Ponyboy in the fountain. Other: Jerry Wood: The schoolteacher responsible for the children who were in the seemingly abandoned church. Mr. Syme: Ponyboy's English teacher who assigns him a theme to write that becomes the story of the novel itself. Ponyboy Curtis, a fourteen-year-old boy who is a member of a "gang of greasers", is leaving a movie theater when he is jumped by "Socs", the greasers' rival gang. Several greasers, including Ponyboy's two older brothers—the paternal Darry and the popular Sodapop—come to his rescue. The next night, Ponyboy and two greaser friends, the hardened Dally and the quiet Johnny, meet Cherry and Marcia, a pair of Soc girls, at a drive-in movie theater. Cherry scorns Dally's rude advances, but Ponyboy speaks civilly with Cherry, emotionally connecting with a Soc for the first time in his life. Afterward, Ponyboy, Johnny, and their wisecracking friend Two-Bit begin to walk Cherry and Marcia home, when they are stopped by Cherry's boyfriend Bob, who badly beat up Johnny a few months back. Bob and the greasers exchange taunts, but Cherry prevents a fight by willingly leaving with Bob. Ponyboy gets home at two in the morning, enraging Darry until he suddenly slaps Ponyboy. As Darry tries to apologize, Pony runs out the door and meets up with Johnny, expressing his anger at Darry's increasing coldness in the wake of his parents' recent deaths in a car crash. Running away from home, Ponyboy and Johnny wander into a park, where Bob and four other Socs surround them. After some heated talk, Ponyboy spits at the Socs, prompting them to attempt to drown him in a nearby fountain, but Johnny stabs Bob, killing him and dispersing the rest. Terrified as to what to do next, Ponyboy and Johnny rush to find Dally, who gives them money and a loaded firearm, directing them to hide in an abandoned church in Windrixville. During their stay there, Pony cuts and dyes his hair as a disguise, reads Gone with the Wind to Johnny, and, upon viewing a beautiful sunrise, recites the poem "Nothing Gold Can Stay" by Robert Frost. Days later, Dally comes to check on them, revealing that violence between the greasers and Socs has escalated since Bob's death into all-out city-wide warfare, with Cherry acting out of guilt as a spy for the greasers. Johnny decides to turn himself in and Dally agrees to take the boys back home. As they attempt to leave, they notice the church has caught fire and several local schoolchildren have become trapped inside. The greasers run inside the burning church to save the children, but Ponyboy is rendered unconscious by the fumes. At the hospital he discovers that he and Dally are not badly injured, but a piece of the church roof fell on Johnny and broke his back. Sodapop and Darry come to the hospital; Darry breaks down and cries. Ponyboy then realizes that Darry cares about him, and is only hard on him because he loves him and cares about his future. The following morning the newspapers declare Pony and Johnny heroes, but Johnny will be charged with manslaughter for Bob's death. Two-Bit tells them that the greaser–Soc rivalry is to be settled in a final rumble. Ponyboy and Two-Bit are approached by a Soc named Randy, Bob's best friend, who expresses remorse for his involvement in the gang war, lacks confidence about the rumble ending the feud, and says he will not participate. Later, Ponyboy visits Johnny at the hospital, where he is in critical condition. On their way home, Pony spots Cherry and they talk. Cherry says she is unwilling to visit Johnny in the hospital because he killed her boyfriend. Pony calls her a traitor, but after she explains herself they end on good terms. After escaping the hospital, Dally shows up just in time for the rumble. The greasers win the fight. Afterward, Pony and Dally hurry back to the hospital to see Johnny, but he dies moments later and a hysterical Dally runs out of the room. Pony returns home that night feeling confused and disoriented. Dally calls the house to say that he has robbed a store and is running from the police. The greasers find Dally deliberately pointing an unloaded firearm at the police, causing them to shoot and kill him. Overwhelmed, Ponyboy faints and is sick in bed for many days due to the resulting concussion from the rumble. When the hearing finally comes, the judge frees Ponyboy from responsibility for Bob's death and allows Pony to remain at home with Darry and Sodapop. Ponyboy returns to school, but his grades drop. Although he is failing English, his teacher, Mr. Syme, says he will pass him if he writes a decent theme. In the copy of Gone with the Wind that Johnny gave him before dying, Ponyboy finds a letter from Johnny describing how he will die proudly after saving the kids from the fire. Johnny also urges Ponyboy to "stay golden". Ponyboy decides to write his English assignment about the recent events, and begins his essay with the opening line of the novel: "When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home".
