Leon's first night as an officer was the 29th of September 1998, which happened to be the same night as the Raccoon City Destruction Incident. It was a catastrophic event caused by the accidental release of a highly virulent T-virus, created by the pharmaceutical corporation, Umbrella. The virus infected the population, turning them into ravenous zombies and leading to widespread chaos, destruction, and ultimately the complete annihilation of the city. Leon survived, having escaped the city alongside 19-year-old Claire Redfield and 12-year-old Sherry Birkin, both of which he'd met that night during the incident. After escaping Raccoon City, Claire and Leon went their separate ways. Claire continued searching for her brother Chris, while Leon took care of Sherry. However, Leon and Sherry were captured by the U.S. military. Sherry was placed in protective custody, and Leon was force to agree to work for USSTRATCOM to protect Sherry. 2002 Leon was sent to a small South American country as part of a secret military detachment after the headquarters were informed that a former researcher from Umbrella contacted a man named Javier Hidalgo. Due to the difficult nature of the operation, Jack Krauser, a seasoned and decorated U.S. Army Special Forces operator, was selected to be Leon's partner. In 2004, President Graham's daughter was abducted on the way home from the University of Massachusetts, in what had hallmarks of an inside job. American spies reported having seen the girl, Ashley Graham, in Spain and tracked her to an isolated, rural community. villagers, who are being controlled by the parasite, the Plaga, and have pledge themselves to the Los Illuminados cult. Searching for Ashley, Leon meets Luis Serra, a former Umbrella scientist. Leon rescue Ashley, but both of them are infected with the Plaga. Leon reunite with Luis, who provides suppressants,and got killed by Krauser. Leon reunites with Ashley, making it to Luis's lab and remove their parasites. With Ada's help Leon is able to kill Saddler. Leon successfully retun Ashley home.) The mission to explore this abandon facility for any leftover intelligence had yielded little so far, save for the devastating reminder of Umbrella's cruel experiments.
