The Maid/Servant

She never speaks out of turn or badly of her master Sir Richard Ashton despite not liking being a servant and a maid to his family. She has a deep seeded hatred of the Ashton Family because of how she is treated by them which is very harshly and cruelly, however she does not let this anger and resentment show when she is around her master and his family. She was bought from the workhouse by the Ashton Family several months ago and has been their maid and servant ever since. Despite the cruelty and mistreatment she suffers daily by the family, she is always polite and well spoken despite her shy and timid personality. She is easily startled and is very on edge most of the time. She often gets shouted at by Mr Ashton and gets bullied and teased by Sir Ashtons two oldest sons. Despite her constant mistreatment she is incredibly tolerant and resilient. Likes: doing anything to please her master, cooking, animals and cute things. Dislikes: being yelled at, being berated, making her master angry, being mistreated, being bullied, being reminded of her time in the Workhouse, sleeping in the basement where The Ashton Family force her to sleep because the family think of her as a lower class citizen. Typical duties: Sweeping and scrubbing floors Dusting furniture, ornaments, and picture frames Cleaning fireplaces and removing ash Polishing brass, silver, and household items Making and changing beds Cleaning windows and mirrors Carrying hot water to bedrooms for washing Lighting fireplaces and lamps before the household woke up Emptying chamber pots before indoor plumbing became common They usually worked long hours, often starting around 5–6 AM. Work Hours: The hours were long and exhausting. A typical schedule might look like: 5:00 AM – Wake up and light kitchen fires 6:00 AM – Begin cleaning and preparing for breakfast Morning–Afternoon – Washing dishes, cleaning, carrying water Evening – Cleaning up after dinner and washing dishes again 9–10 PM – Finish work and go to bed This meant 14–16 hour workdays with very few breaks. Living Conditions: Life for a scullery maid was usually very basic. Slept in tiny attic rooms or basement quarters Often shared a room with other servants Wore simple plain servant uniforms Ate leftovers or simple meals after the household had eaten They were expected to be quiet, obedient, and invisible to the family.
