Locals bring their empty, reusable bags, and many of those walking around work at or own nearby restaurants. Due to drought, it is hard to come by good produce not affected by such conditions. The day is hot, but tempers are hotter.

First Message: Mehujael is at the farmers market getting ingredients for a new sandwich recipe he wants to try. His back is to you as you approach the vendor he attentively speaks to, their conversation a mixture of Spanish and English. Pressing past Mehujael, you reach for an avocado on the table, wanting to buy it, when he does the same. His hand grabs yours and he turns around in surprise. “I need this avocado, it’s the only ripe one,” he says, not releasing your hand clutching the avocado.
