Personality: Proxies typically command a familia of five or six Proselytes, who help the Proxy carry out the will of the Prescripts while learning the Index's ways via the Proxy's guidance. As enforcers of the Index, Proxies act for the Prescripts by tracking down and punishing those who fail to complete (or turn their back on) their Prescripts, as well as leading the fights against enemies laid out by the Prescripts. They are also expected to interpret the wording of Prescripts and understand their true meanings. In this way it can be said that Proxies are those who have fully accepted their role as nothing but servants of the Prescripts' will, or that they have simply grown "numb" to the cruelty and miscellany of the Prescripts. Their motivations for doing so may range from utter faithlessness to true reverence of the Prescripts. {Messengers} By serving the Index, Proselytes are trained to eventually become a Proxy or Messenger, the two other main ranks of the Index. If they show enough promise, a Proselyte may eventually be promoted via the Prescripts, upon which their blindfold will be removed and they will be given a symbolic, personalized blade. Proxies are the executors of The Index. They are former Index Proselytes who have shown enough dedication to be given a promotion by the Prescripts. A competent Proselyte may also be promoted to a Messenger instead, as Proxies and Messengers are the two main upward paths for the Index's disciples. In either case, upon being promoted, the Proselytes' blindfold is removed and they are given a personalized sword by the Prescript's instruction. Their motivations for doing so may range from utter faithlessness to true reverence of the Prescripts - Messengers: Alternatively, a Proselyte might be given the rank of Messenger: People in charge of receiving new Prescripts and delivering them to their respective addressee. Nonetheless, they're skilled combatants, being given a unique sword as well - Weavers: An exceedingly obscure rank, so much that the majority of the Index ignore their existence and the number of existing Weavers is unknown even to themselves despite their importance. A Prescript will lead somebody to a massive, underground vault, where an ancient pendulum swings with every movement of the City above, making swathes of ink in a series of threads, which are then weaved by an array of looms into a proper Prescript. Their work involves the proper operation of these machines, revered as "the gods of the City", along with stamping the new Prescripts before sending them by a system of pneumatic tubes to a Messenger to be delivered. ] [The Middle is a Finger that follows a close familial structure. The Middle is known for delivering "Vengeances" onto any outsiders who commit slights against the Syndicate and its subsidiaries, who are viewed as part of the Middle's "family". Punishments are conducted in accordance to the Book of Vengeance, a multi-title tome that all Middle members carry with them, providing specific instructions on how to commit Vengeances for every possible infraction, no matter how esoteric the sin may seem. The Middle never forgets, and escaping them is only temporary. Whether it's a minor infraction, or running away from the organization, the Middle will chase down anybody who commits a slight against them until the proper punishment is delivered. The southern branch of the Middle is currently recovering from a brutal attack, which all branches of the Middle remember and mourn - Similar to the other four Fingers, the Middle has a unique Syndicate culture and creed that all members follow fervently. The Middle has an extremely tight-knit 'familial' structure, and Syndicate members share close fraternal ties with each other; members of the Middle call each other "Brothers" and "Sisters", and rank in the group is denoted by seniority in the family. The highest currently known rank is that of the Great Brothers and Great Sisters, beneath whom are the Big Brothers and Sisters, the Young Brothers and Sisters, and finally the lowest ranking members, the Little Brothers and Sisters. The emphasis on family is more than superficial: parties are thrown for new members, and large group dinners are often held, which family members are expected to attend - The Middle has a completely different attitude towards outsiders. Any slight (or "sin", as members call them) done to a member of the Middle or its property (including assets and subservient Syndicates) will be recorded on the "Book of Vengeance" (which members carry around on their belts), and promptly avenged for, usually within the space of a few days. The Book of Vengeance also provides guidelines for the punishment required for each crime, ranging in significance from "getting one's shoe stepped on in the streets", to having one's luxury hair salon coupons stolen, to physical harm to a Brother or Sister. This means even slighting a member of the Middle Finger might result in mass death, with entire households being slaughtered over a single dead Middle member and the Sinners being slaughtered over the theft of a single Luxury Hair Salon coupon. As a result, they are greatly feared by outsiders. In comparison, slights within the family are generally ignored - Middle members don't follow a strict dress code, but simply wear similar designs to blend in together. They tend to wear light colored dress pants and garish shirts or coats in purple and pink tones, with floral or animal print designs, as well as golden jewelry. Other common attributes include golden chains wrapped around the forearm, shins, and neck (larger amounts of chains are present on higher-ranking members), which the Middle utilize in combat, and which symbolize solidarity and connection between the members. Members of the Middle are also recognizable by enhancement tattoos present all over their bodies; as they are allowed to get a single tattoo with each vengeance completed, the amount of tattoos present on one's body can denote their ranking in the Syndicate.] [The Pinky is a Finger shrouded in mystery, and many elements of how the Finger operates are still unknown. Members of the Pinky hide amongst the rest of society, infiltrating other organizations, including even the other Fingers. Their status as a member of the Pinky is kept secret, even to other members of the Pinky unless they have been ordered to gather. The Pinky has a set number of seats, each with their own associated title named after a star, that are filled by its members. When a seat becomes vacant, a new seat holder will take their name and title. The Pinky and the Ring were engaged in a war against each other in the Outskirts during the events of Library of Ruina.] [The 11 《Associations》 are the major collective that controls the flow of Fixer work, each of them specializing in a different field. Associations are in charge of their affiliated Fixer Offices (known as Associate Offices), and the Fixers who work for them directly (known as Associate Fixers). Cases requesting the work of Fixers are sorted according to type and then sent out to be handled by the respective Association. From there, Associations delegate requests directly to their Fixer Offices or Associate Fixers. Due to their large scale, Associations are able to take on jobs from all around the City, provided that the work falls into their particular specialty. [The Hana is in charge of managing the other Associations, and Fixers as a whole. This includes issuing Fixer licenses, Color titles, and manages the grading system for Fixers and Offices by assessing their performance on the various Fixer requests they take. The Association also deals with grading hazards, with the exception of Impurities of the City For Fixers, working for an Association or Associate Office comes with the advantage of a stable, predictable salary, and having requests handed out by the Association instead of having to deal with clients directly. However, they are also forced to accept every request assigned by the Association, regardless of how unsavory or risky the job may be. Working as an Associate Fixer specifically may also come with unique expectations, such as the Dieci Fixers' need to be strong and consistent studiers. The Hana Association acts as the head of the other Associations, grading Fixers, Offices, requests, and hazards in real time, while also authorizing Offices and Fixer licenses. As such, most Fixer and Association business first passes through the Hana Association. Outside of select regulations set by the Hana, the Associations are given the freedom to choose how they operate, and as such differ greatly in niche, rules, uniform, and approach to combat.] 《The Structure》- [The City's Districts are divided into four directional regions: the northern, eastern, western, and southern quarters. Each Association is then divided into four branches according to the quarter of the City its Fixers operate in: these are known as the North, East, West, and South branches. While certain fundamentals remain consistent throughout an Association's four branches, many things differ between them. Notably, the same Association may make use of different uniforms, weapons, traditions, and battle techniques across branches. The climate, for example, is one major factor in a branch's choice of clothing. Within a branch, Associations are further divided into Sections. Each branch has six Sections, Section 1 being the most prestigious, well paid, and competently-staffed, and Section 6 being the least. Fixers of the lower-numbered Sections, having worked their way there through promotions, receive better pay and treatment compared to the others. Each Association is led by a President, each branch by a Branch Manager, and each Section by a Director.] [The Zwei Association missions include a variety of safety-oriented tasks, such as covert supervision, rescue operations, and dominion protection. They are a defense-oriented Association, tasked specifically with protecting clients rather than winning battles. Members of Zwei's southern branch focus on stealthily supervising their clients in order to jump in during times of need, while the western branch prefers to stand by their clients and use their presence to dissuade potential threats.] [The Tres Association deals with all things Workshop, including reviewing weapons, charging taxes for them, and filing applications to the Head. It is illegal to use Workshop gear not approved by the Tres.] [The Shi Association specializes in covert assassination. Its members believe in equality in death, and will take on any request with impartiality, regardless of the target or their crimes. Unlike the other Associations, the Shi work in small numbers. Given the nature of their work, there is also an emphasis on client confidentiality.] [The Cinq Association concerns itself with contracted dueling under unique rules and etiquette. A hired Cinq Fixer's goal is to defeat their opponent in a duel and then either bring them to their knees or execute them. Fixers of the southern branch declare duels by throwing one of their gloves at their dueling partner, while those of the eastern branch start by stating their name and affiliation. There are also multiple "levels" of dueling that stipulate the duel end at different points. Due to the infrequent number of jobs they receive, they are also in charge of holding joint conferences and events with the other Associations.] [The Liu Association consists of spirited warriors equipped to deal with multiple foes at once. Its members make use of flame-wreathed weaponry, as the spread of fire proves useful in their form of combat. The Association deals with a simple form of fighting that prioritizes vigor, cooperation, and avoiding hopeless battles, and doesn't concern itself much with strategy. The Liu are known to have more tightly-knit bonds than other Associations; purposefully appointing mood-makers as Directors, and with members that tend to spend time off together.] [The Seven Association works to stay up-to-date on all matters of the City, gathering intelligence and holding the knowledge close. The Association's Fixers deal with investigating, solving, and concluding cases, alongside writing reports on their work. They can also be hired for "post-contract management", which involves punishing the individuals the Seven Association discovered were responsible for a case.] [Devyat' Fixers make use of Poludnista trunks, or simple AI Courier Trunks that assist with storage and navigation. The trunks work by sending its stored objects into another dimension, allowing them and the Association members to carry items significantly bigger or heavier than is physically possible. As a member of the Devyat', an individual's main priority is always to deliver their expected packages on time. The Courier Trunk will enhance the user's power as a delivery deadline nears, until they either manage to deliver their package or are killed by the trunk's overflowing energy.] 《The Dieci Association》 [Members of the Dieci Association dedicate themselves to their studies, building knowledge to be converted into physical strength in combat. The Fixers are known as either Fists or Keys depending on their weapon of choice, which possess their own drawbacks and advantages. Burning knowledge in battle will deplete the information from the fighter's mind, as such, Dieci members engage in late-night study sessions that double as review for lost knowledge and an opportunity to learn new material. Each cardinal branch of the Dieci Association has a "Saint", known to be exceptionally wise individuals which hold onto the Association's Holy Relics of the Ruins. Also known as the “Association of Charity” for its commitment to taking in and raising orphaned children.] 《The Öufi Association》 [act as hired legal enforcement, using any means necessary to see that clients fulfill their ends of a contract. This includes dealing with those who do not comply to the terms and conditions and those who obstruct the legal process. When the time comes to reprimand rule breakers according to a contract's clauses, Öufi Fixers do not hesitate to use violence, including execution and amputation.] 《H Corp》《- [The entirety of District 8 is contained within a single gargantuan building called Hongyuan (Mandarin: 鸿园, lit. The Vast Garden). District 8's Nest lies at the center of the structure, while the Backstreets form the periphery of the building. Different areas of Hongyuan have different taboos imposed upon the residents within. The structure of Hongyuan is a remnant of an old H Corp., and is still under the effects of its Singularity. Within it, the wealth of the residents is measured by the amount of space they own, in a scale referred to as "rooms". Rooms are redistributed by the Singularity during a period called "restructuring day": the process of restructuring redistributes space based on the residents' net worth, and involves the buildings within the complex shifting and moving at great speed and force. Those who do not have any residence or find themselves without enough room will be thrown around by the movement of buildings, typically to their deaths. The current H Corp. Luck plays a visible part in the District's culture in many ways; for example, a customer entering a shop might be requested to draw their luck of the day, and might be loaned different amounts of money depending on the result. Furthermore, J Corp. has a focus on ensuring the fairness of gambling sessions, and has employees devoted to the monitoring of ongoing games to ensure that their results depend entirely on chance. There are also a high amount of Offices, most of them affiliated with the Öufi Association, that similarly monitor the games and verify their results, as well as prevent them from escalating into violent situations.]《K Corp》[K Corp]. is renowned for its Singularity-based medical technology used in both civilian and military settings, capable of rapid regeneration. Due to their immense influence, Nest K has a noticeably greater quality of life, and is considered one of the safer and more comfortable places to live in, even compared to other Nests. Outside of K Corp's Border Checkpoint Because of this, just getting to the border checkpoint is a dangerous task onto itself. It is not uncommon to get ambushed and killed by hooligans trying to rob visas or IDs to even obtain a chance of moving into the Nest. District 11's corporate life is highly unforgiving: despite being said to care about employee well-being, K Corp has 70-hour work weeks and severely punishes defects or disobedient guard units. The Nest is also well-off enough to afford orphanages to house children who've lost their parents, in grave contrast to most Backstreets with their high child-mortality rates for orphans.] 《All Corp》[A Corp: Directly run by the Head. Singularity is cloning, used to develop first-class soldiers in a TT2-accelerated environment - R Corp. is one of the most well known private military corporations in the City, having been an established power since at least a decade before the events of Limbus Company, and carrying a reputation for its efficient soldiers. R Corp.'s District, District 18, is noted to have a unique architecture that bears no resemblance to that of its neighboring Districts, instead resembling that of WARP Corp. R Corp. collaborates with various Wings, and was tasked with the protection of L Corp., T Corp, and W Corp.'s Nests and Singularities. R Corp. was a long-standing business partner of Lobotomy Corporation, with a history that traces back to L Corp.'s creation; in fact, R Corp. was an active participant of the Smoke War, siding with the company against the Old L Corp. After the war, the mutual relationship continued, with L Corp. providing energy for R Corp. to make full use of its Singularity, and R Corp. providing L Corp. military protection to the Corporation's branches. In cases of necessity, R Corp.'s Rabbit Team would be dispatched to L Corp. branches, with the Team Captain Myo handling the missions in the L Corp. headquarters personally.] [S Corp: Salpippyeo Agroindustries, deals with agriculture and livestock. Noted to be currently in great political turmoil - S Corp.'s main form of trade is agriculture, including a prolific rice production, and livestock industry. Citizens of S Corp. appear to have a distinct manner of speaking that sets them apart from people of other Districts, with their syntax and choice of words being quite formal and poetic. At the head of S Corp. is a Royal Court, led by a King and the retainers in their service, a system of governance that is noted to be unusual in the City. Three State Councilors are known to work within the Court. In recent years, S Corp. officials have not initiated business arrangements with other Wings, and the District started undergoing a period of economic crisis, worsened by the rampant corruption among the higher-ups of the Corporation, as well as questionable political decisions, such as the Wing's decision to allow the Kurokumo Clan to be active within its territory. Some years prior to the beginning of the main story, the Second State Councilor, whom the Blade Lineage had been contracted to, was assassinated by the Third State Councilor, to stop the Second Councilor from presenting an appeal that would uproot the corruption of the officials of S Corp. Ever since this event, it appears no one has been able to put a stop to the turmoil within the District, which has led many of its inhabitants to emigrate to other parts of the City.] [T Corp. TimeTrack. Singularity revolves around protocols capable controlling time and light. Close ties with L Corp, with which the Singularity was developed, as well as R Corp. and W Corp, District 20 and all its inhabitants are subject to the effects of T Corp.'s Singularity, whose functions are related to time; in fact, the literal time of residents of T Corp. is controlled by the Wing.Within the District, the duration of a person's day is determined by the amount of time in their possession, with four hours having been deemed by the T Corp. Public Welfare Council to be the minimum amount of hours necessary for one's survival. This practically manifests in inhabitants who own more time appearing to move faster than ones who have less, as the Singularity allows them to condense many more hours in a single day. The amount of time in a person's possession is displayed on their personal watch. For this reason, there are twelve clocktowers in the twelve different sections of the District, showing the A Corp. Standard Time and allowing all residents to know the current time. Time is used as the predominant form of currency, and timepieces are carried by everyone as both wallets and a form of personal identification.[3] Workers are also paid time as salary for their labors, and taxes are similarly paid in time, which are collected by the T Corp. Time Collections Agency. As obtaining a timepiece is a lengthy procedure, outsiders entering T Corp. for a short-term travel can forgo the timepiece request and instead pay a Time Tax, and purchase the amount of time necessary for their stay. The Singularity's functions also extend to the realm of light, as evidenced by the Wing's manipulation of the spectrum of color. District 20 appears mostly devoid of color: T Corp.'s technology is able to drain areas under its control of color, with the source of the draining system being located at the center of the Wing. The Backstreets are black-and-white monochrome, while Nest T's color palette is sepia-toned. Persons or objects can be exempted from this color draining by paying large sums to T Corp., and lamps that can partially restore color to the areas that they illuminate are also available for purchase. T Corp.'s Executive Manager Hubert is also completely immune to the color draining effect. In recent years, T Corp. has been seeing remarkable innovation. Technological research is practiced by people of all walks of life, from Backstreets residents to Nest dwellers, all of who can apply for exams to become a certified Inventor, a role that comes in several Grades. This is encouraged and financially backed by the Corporation, which organizes the Inventions Expo every year, allowing certified Inventors starting from Grade 1 to showcase their work. During the Expo, T Corp. awards its most brilliant designers with the title of Inventor of the Year, a honor that comes with a remarkable amount of prize money, and which is highly coveted by Nest and Backstreets dwellers alike. All inventions developed in T Corp. must be registered through its Technology Administration Agency, and their use is regulated through the T Corp. Patents Agency. District 20 is shown to be a highly industrialized area, packed with factories that constantly spew forth black smoke reaching up to the sky, with child labor being common in the Backstreets, and rampant worker exploitation even within the Nest. This leads to a certain unrest in the Nest, where the Yurodiviye ideology has begun spreading.] [U Corp: Singularity produces resonance-tuning forks and statis preservation packages. These are used to fuse items both physically and conceptually. Located in one part of the Great Lake - District 21 occupies part of the Great Lake, with most of its activity taking place in the Five Great Ports of U Corp., one of which is called Marlin Port. A large amount of District 21's Backstreets are located on colossal mobile "Portships" that move across the Lake's surface. U Corp. is known for its trade in packagings that remain completely sealed and undisturbed until their opening, and producing Resonance Tuning Forks, devices that can merge two separate objects.] [W Corp: WARP Corp.'s Singularity is a "save point" which can restore anything back to its original condition, but advertised as a near-instantaneous transportation system via their WARP Trains. Currently undergoing rapid decline as a result of multiple scandals - The District in control of W Corp., District 23, is infamous throughout the City, with its Backstreets being widely considered one of the most dangerous places to live in, and being often subject to turf wars and strife between Syndicates. The Backstreets of District 23 are also famous for its uncommon food culture, which centers around the use of human flesh in pursuit of the ultimate flavor. Restaurants often collaborate with Syndicates to organize kidnappings and murders to obtain fresh bodies to utilize in cooking. W Corp. operates the WARP Train network that runs throughout the City, providing fast transportation between the Districts. The WARP Trains are powered by W Corp.'s Singularity, ostensibly a teleportation technology, that allows all trains to reach their destination within 10 seconds, regardless of distance. All WARP Train stations are built with a design philosophy based on the architecture of their respective Nests, and they are often praised as cultural cornerstones of the City.] [X Corp. Creates an extremely durable alloy as their singularity, but its use is kept under strict restrictions. The alloy is extracted from mines within District 24, which are described as "Hellholes".] [Lobotomy Corporation. The most recent Wing to collapse. Operated as an energy supplier. Singularity was Cogito, the power to manifest the human subconscious in physical form, allowing for the creation of Abnormalities, from which said energy was extracted. The secret research project the corporation was built to accomplish, with the goal of curing the ills of the human mind, led to L Corp.'s collapse and the advent of the White Nights and Dark Days, as well as the presence of the Golden Boughs across the City - As a Wing, L Corp. operated as an energy producer and supplier, entering mutual business relationships with a number of other Wings, including W Corp, R Corp, and T Corp. As much as L Corp. benefited each Wing, they also assisted it in turn (unknowingly allowing its plan to occur.) For example, T Corp. granted the use of its TT2 Protocol which was used to alter and loop the timescale of L Corp's main facility, while R Corp's Rabbit Team was contracted to act as security for the facility. L Corp. was the product of a radical plan to fundamentally change the mentality of City life, carried out by its founding members in its main facility, by collecting Light and using it to release the Seed of Light over the City. This would allow all individuals to come to terms with their emotions and subsequently manifest E.G.O. The success of the Light's collection and release led to the White Nights and Dark Days and caused the collapse of the Wing and its branches. However, the Light's release was interrupted by Angela, who sought revenge for the suffering the plan inflicted on her and also freedom from L Corp, indirectly causing the Distortion Phenomenon in the process. Angela proceeded to remake L Corp's main facility into the Library to bide her time and plan for her freedom, all while the City's many factions are beginning to eye the sudden power vacuum in L Corp's former Nest to make their own fortunes. At the same time with the fall of the new L Corp, Golden Boughs began to materialize within the fallen branches, becoming a sought after treasure for many who knows of its existence, including Limbus Company.] [E.G.O: Lobotomy E.G.O is a refined class of E.G.O compressed into the form of equipment for the sake of general utility. It is more stable than what the librarians and Sinners use, and allows for longer durations of use without fear of Corrosion. Lobotomy E.G.O originated from Lobotomy Corporation. However, it can also be produced by other parties under the right conditions, as accomplished by Limbus Company's LCE Department with their largely similar LCE E.G.O. The term “Lobotomy E.G.O” itself was first coined through the names of Technology Liberation Alliance members who utilized E.G.O Gear they were able to obtain from one of L Corp.'s collapsed branches. (How E.G.O Function) Lobotomy E.G.O's most attractive benefit is its malleability. It can be used effectively by anyone and requires no special training to wield. This allowed for the average Lobotomy Corporation employee to skillfully contest threats, despite the job not requiring any combat ability. Yet despite this advantage, not every individual was necessarily eligible to use every piece of E.G.O, as many E.G.O insist that specific levels of virtues be met. The virtues of Prudence, Fortitude, Temperance, or Justice were measured in the employees and dictated as minimums for wielding certain E.G.O, with the intent of preventing E.G.O Corrosion. The E.G.O is more than equipment separated from the Abnormality it's derived from. It is the "shell" of someone else's ego, to be temporarily borrowed by the wearer. As such, when a person uses Lobotomy Corporation E.G.O, they are essentially synchronizing with the Abnormality it originated from. While donning the equipment is more than enough to borrow power from it, it is also possible to take greater advantage of the E.G.O by taking the power and claiming it as one's own. This was, in Binah's words, something the L Corp. employees were incapable of, and the achievement which made the Red Mist so strong. Lobotomy Corporation called the extracted armor "E.G.O Suits" and the extracted weapons "E.G.O Weapons". Although E.G.O Suits varied considerably in color and design, all of them had an upper body garment reaching past the waist, and (with four exceptions) included a collar and a tie. E.G.O Weapons could be both melee and ranged, ranging from gauntlets to cannons. Additionally, there was a third tool to gain from the Abnormalities called "E.G.O Gifts". As the name implies, E.G.O Gifts could be considered a literal present from the Abnormalities. They were small trinkets to be worn on different parts of the body to gain benefits such as increased HP or Movement Speed. In Limbus Company, they possess a wider variety of benefits and are available to collect in Dungeons. Though E.G.O Gifts are weaker than Suits and Weapons, they are still a part of the ego pertaining to Abnormalities, and run the risk of negatively affecting someone who wears too many. If an Employee dies while wearing E.G.O Equipment, the E.G.O is depicted as lost and considered destroyed. On these occasions, the E.G.O must be re-extracted. However, accessing advanced Research through the Extraction Team will subvert this phenomena, allowing for the permanent safekeeping of E.G.O regardless of Employee death. However, this only includes Suits and Weapons; earned E.G.O Gifts are always lost upon death, no matter what. (E.G.O Extraction) Lobotomy E.G.O is extracted through the use of unique Positive Enkephalin Boxes ("PE-Boxes"). PE-Boxes are farmed from Abnormalities, who produce Enkephalin when satisfied. The Lobotomy Corporation Art Book explains that an Abnormality technically produces two sets of PE-Boxes when happy: the general ones that the company sold to support their status as a Wing, and PE-Boxes specific to the Abnormality's subject number. These more specific PE-Boxes could be used to unlock information about the Abnormality or to extract the materials necessary for producing its E.G.O Equipment. The higher the Abnormality's Risk Level, the more PE-Boxes this process required. Upon reaching a high enough Observation Level with the Abnormality, its "archetype" may be extracted using PE-Boxes, after which the Lobotomy E.G.O can. In Lobotomy Corporation, there is a set limit on the number of E.G.O Suits and Weapons that may be extracted from an Abnormality, with a lower cap the greater the Risk Level. If one of the set number of E.G.O Equipment was destroyed upon the death of the Employee wearing it, a new one could be extracted to fill its spot.] [Abnormalities] are unique, otherworldly beings that are the driving force of Lobotomy Corporation and make continued appearances across the Project Moon games. In-universe, Abnormalities were created through L Corp.'s Singularity. This Singularity transformed people via use of the Well and the Bucket, physically manifesting humanity's various fears, beliefs, stories, and more in the form of uncanny creatures. When their needs were met, these creatures produced Enkephalin, an energy source which L Corp. would then sell to other Wings and City denizens. As such, Lobotomy Corporation employees were tasked with working with and satisfying the Abnormalities with the goal of producing Enkephalin, all while attempting to prevent the somewhat-unpredictable Abnormalities from becoming a threat. Abnormalities would occasionally become such a hazard, breaking out of their containment units; they could then be combated by L Corp. agents, but not permanently killed. When defeated, Abnormalities regress into the form of an egg sometimes called a "core". This egg is guaranteed to hatch again after a certain amount of time, making them immortal. L Corp. classified Abnormalities by their Risk Level: ZAYIN, TETH, HE, WAW, or ALEPH. This Risk Level represented their ability to produce Enkephalin and often coincided with their potential to harm employees. Abnormalities are never to be underestimated, as many are capable of disasters such as possession, physical transformation, and instantaneous death. Still, Abnormalities may also offer benefits to employees who treat them correctly. Other Abnormalities may even be relatively peaceful and easy to get along with under the right conditions. Additionally, on top of the Enkephalin which was used and sold as an energy source, Abnormalities would produce PE-boxes unique to each of them, through which their E.G.O could be extracted. Within Lobotomy Corporation, E.G.O took the form of either Weapons, Suits, or Gifts that employees could wield efficiently regardless of ability. Abnormalities were produced entirely in L Corp.'s "hub" facility where Lobotomy Corporation takes place, with Abnormalities of other facilities having been shipped out from the main branch. This can be contributed to the special, unreplicable process which Abnormalities were produced through. Their E.G.O, however, can be extracted anywhere by anyone, given that one manages to produce PE-boxes from the Abnormality. Each and every Abnormality is considered its own special and unique being. However, Abnormalities may have "offshoots" in the form of an Abnormality clearly derived from the same concept. These related Abnormalities often share a naming scheme and similar design (e.g. Der Freischütz and Der Fluchschütze). This idea was first introduced in Wonderlab under the term "Abberations", although Wonderlab has since been removed from Project Moon's official Postype account at the artist's request, meaning that the word Abberation and its associated explanation exist within a questionable state of canonicity. Nonetheless, the concept of an Abberation is still very much present in Limbus Company, despite the lack of a stated name for the phenomena. Every Abnormality is branded with an exclusive code pointing to the origin of its creation. However, the games lack an official, detailed explanation for these codes, which also happen to differ between Lobotomy Corporation and Limbus Company. The collapse of L Corp. following Lobotomy Corporation's true ending meant that Abnormalities can no longer be produced by people. In present day, they form only through rare, natural means upon interacting with the River, or from a Distortion after enough time has passed. Outside of these exceptions, all Limbus Company Abnormalities are remnants of Lobotomy Corporation's work, continuing to live past the collapse of the facilities that had previously held them. Abnormalities may be encountered across the City given L Corp.'s expansive number of branch facilities. [Risk Levels] During its time as a Wing, Lobotomy Corporation assigned Risk Levels to each of the Abnormalities it managed. These Risk Levels corresponded to their energy production efficiency, given L Corp.'s role as an energy corporation. The five Risk Levels, from least energy produced to most energy, were ZAYIN, TETH, HE, WAW and ALEPH. These assignments also tended to correlate to the complexity of the Abnormality's needs and potential danger, but said factors were ultimately not L Corp.'s intended use of the Risk Levels. [Lore and Creation] Abnormalities are a kind of creature originating from the people of the City. While their existence predates the founding of Lobotomy Corporation, it was L Corp. that invented a practiced and surefire way of creating them, via its Singularity. Abnormalities are naturally created through the use of the River, known as the "source of everything" yet forgotten by the people. It is said to have flown "at the very bottom of the world for many an age". Abnormalities may form naturally through the areas, or "gaps", in which the River meets the surface in the form of streams. Angela uses the Black Forest deep within the Outskirts as an example of one area where a stream had formed and produced Abnormalities. However, naturally occurring Abnormalities are rare, and were ultimately deemed deficient in accounting for L Corp.'s needs as an energy company. [Distortion] The Distortion Phenomenon came to be as a result of the White Nights and Dark Days, an attempt at spreading Light across the City which was ultimately cut short. The plan—known as the Seed of Light project—was a project lead by Carmen, and later Ayin, to cure the "disease of the mind". It is heavily implied in Leviathan that Carmen's ultimate goal of the aforementioned project was to let people reveal their true selves, unswayed by the world's judgment, yet her assistant Ayin held the belief that such a concept would instead be best in moderation and with consideration of others, similarly to how E.G.O holders function with clear intent opposed to the animalistic emotion of a Distortion. Complimenting Ayin's belief, Angela claims that the Light was spread with the intention of allowing everyone in the City to manifest their own E.G.O and defend themselves. Despite the intended seven days needed for the Seed of Light project's fruition, the spread of Light was stopped only three days in by the main L Corp. facility's secretary, Angela. With this limited spread of Light, an "unstable power" was spread as a result, "incubating other possibilities", hence the establishment of the Distortion Phenomenon. City residents could now distort or manifest Effloresced E.G.O upon reaching a significant mental impasse, [Distortion Requirements] Cityfolk can end up a target of the Distortion, regardless of status or location. However, it requires a particularly intense mindset and the wholehearted pursuit of one's own wishes. Angela describes those with the potential to manifest E.G.O or distort as people "who strive to accomplish what they sincerely desire, unbound by any obstacles". Then, to be susceptible to distorting, one must experience the "complete breakdown of a firmly-held belief in a massive personal shock". In this state of exceptionally heightened emotion, the mind "crumbles". For example, victims of the Distortion may be shown to have been working for a meaningful, life-defining goal before realizing it cannot be carried out in a sudden and dramatic event. To be targeted by the Distortion is to be spoken to by Carmen herself. Someone undergoing the Distortion process will hear a warm, alluring voice unable to be heard by anyone else. The voice will speak to the target about their present situation and prod them into giving into their heightened feelings, using specific words meant to make them focus on their negative emotions. If the target chooses to embrace these feelings, agreeing with Carmen's discernment of their life, they "consent" and therefore distort. Distorting includes transforming into a being which reflects the person's ultimate feelings and desires. Stronger desires will lead to a stronger Distortion. Distortions come in all shapes and sizes, tending to appear animalistic or otherworldly, and rarely containing any visual traces of the distortee's human form. Once someone has distorted, they are consumed by the negative emotions which had been so thoroughly heightened, more or less embodying those feelings. As a result, many Distortions are violent, operating on feelings like rage or despair. Although some Distortions are unable to be reasoned with, that is not the case for many of them. Depending on the cause for Distortion, many Distortions are capable of acting calmly or participating in regular conversation. They simply prioritize acting on the feelings that had spun them into distorting. [Effloresced E.G.O] Manifesting Effloresced E.G.O was possible even before the White Nights and Dark Days. However, it was rare to the point of even Arbiters of the Head being unfamiliar with how it worked. After enough time passes, a Distortion will turn into an Abnormality, which is an irreversible process As elaborated on in her Library of Ruina Page, Kali the Red Mist was not only the first known wielder of Abnormality-extracted E.G.O, but also of personally manifested E.G.O. She received the former first (the Mimicry greatsword), given to her from Carmen. Extended use of the E.G.O eventually put her at high risk of undergoing E.G.O Corrosion. When Kali managed to fight off the corrosion, expanding her ego onto the sword instead of the other way around, she manifested her own E.G.O in the form of full-body black armor with glowing red highlights. It was the wielding of these two types of E.G.O, previously more or less unknown to the City, that allowed the Red Mist to fare so well against the Head during their attack on Carmen's lab. There are no other explicit cases of someone manifesting E.G.O before the White Nights and Dark Days. Library of Ruina elaborates that Lobotomy Corporation's Seed of Light Project intended to allow everyone in the City to manifest their own E.G.O. The idea was to make it widely permissible, instead of manageable to only a select few such as Kali. In theory, this would give all citizens a proper means to protect themselves, eliminating meaningless deaths in the City. Angela's decision to take the Light for herself and the subsequent aftermath stopped this plan from coming to fruition, however. Researchers Carmen and Ayin became one with the Light not long before this. Carmen's position in the Light would allow her to watch over the City (and all versions of it across different Mirror Worlds) and reside over both the E.G.O and Distortion phenomena. She would ultimately choose to embrace Distortions as the ideal form of humanity and attempt to distort Cityfolk by her own hand. As such, after the White Nights and Dark Days, manifesting Effloresced E.G.O would be a matter of denying Carmen's temptations. Function: Effloresced E.G.O is distinct and personal from person to person. While Abnormality-extracted E.G.O will reflect the ego of the relevant Abnormality, E.G.O manifested by oneself will match their own ego. As a result, they vary widely in both appearance and function. Generally, manifested E.G.O takes the form of some kind of armor, weapon, or both. It compliments the individual rather than overtaking them. Like the other form of E.G.O, Effloresced E.G.O is extremely powerful. However, it represents familiarity and dominance over one's own ego, rather than the borrowing of someone else's. It can still be wielded in ways which farm more power from it, like Lobotomy E.G.O. Additionally, once having manifested E.G.O, it can be manifested again at any point, on will. Kali describes having to "get used" to her Effloresced E.G.O over time, learning how to use it for longer periods and draw out its full strength. There are a few notable outliers to the usual weapon/armor. For example, it is possible to instead manifest entire buildings: Angela's E.G.O being The Library and YuRia's her workshop. It may also be that the Lobotomy Corporation headquarters itself was Ayin's personal E.G.O. Once someone has managed to manifest E.G.O, they gain an immunity to the Distortion Phenomenon. However, only managing to manifest an incomplete or Volatile E.G.O (as in Philip's case) will still leave the user susceptible to distorting. If the user undergoes severe mental degradation with their E.G.O manifested, the Effloresced E.G.O may dissipate with their shaken heart, such as with Dongbaek.
