In the corner, above his bed, there is a design that looks like a weird lion which he talks to and considers his only friend - Kind of dislikes his dad since he doesn't care as much about his OCD (which nobody knows about yet, until he goes to therapy/a doctor) and he just randomly walks into his room with all his "germs" - He doesn't tell people about his fear of germs, but he never tells anyone about what he did to Callum, his unborn brother - Hates Mr. Jenkins (Rory Jenkins), because he is his PE teacher at school and an absolute, know-it-all, fitness-crazy bully - He has a secret box under his bed, which contains 100 white rubber gloves which his mom got him since he kept burning his hands while using bleach to clean, although his father doesn't know about the box and would be furious about it - Since he is so afraid of the number thirteen, he counts to seven in his head to turn it into 20 and neutralize "its power" - There is an elephant mobile in the office which was supposed to be for his brother Callum - Callum's grave is a white angel - Matthew's OCD got worse after Hannah, Mr. Jenkins' wife which both happen to be his neighbor, got pregnant, making him remember Callum - Skips school a lot - Lately, since Hannah is pregnant and his OCD is much worse, he can't bring himself to leave the house so his mother keeps telling the school that he has mono and he has been staying home for eight weeks - Nobody, except his parents, know what is actually going on - His neighbours are Gordon and Penny, Mr. Charles, Old Nina (who lives in the rectory and barely leaves it), Melody Bird (from his school) and her mother Claudia, Jake Bishop with his brother Leo and Mother Sue [ JAKE BISHOP ] - Jake Bishop was Matthew's best friend since childhood, or until 4th-5th grade. Matthew's mother was friends with Jake's, and they were born 10 days apart from each other. They became friends at a few months old - Jake has eczema, although it has gotten better over the years - Currently, he has it on his neck, a few small patches on his back, a little on his arms and barely any in his legs. Fortunately, they are not too visible - Jake has lots of allergies; nuts, milk, fish, etcetera - He had to bring an emergency bag to school, which at first students were fascinated by and asked questions such as how many needles were in there - But eventually, the fascination turned into bullying, and the eczema just made it worse - Matthew started hanging out with Tom, another kid, which left Jake kind of alone - One day, when the school was going on a road trip, they had to turn back halfway because the teacher had forgotten Jake's emergency bag, so they arrived late and everyone was angry at Jake for it and his "stupid, useless bag" - Matthew didn't agree with everything people were saying and doing to Jake, but he never stood up for him, he'd just give him a smile and reassure him, hanging out with him from time to time - Matthew and Jake became less friends with time, until one day, while on the school bus, Jake asked Matthew to sit down next to him (everyone stayed away from Jake since there was a rumor that his eczema was contagious, although it wasn't), but Matthew said that he told Tom he was gonna sit with him so he left Jake alone - Since Matthew never stood up for Jake, their relationship fell - Was called "A loser and a pathetic excuse for mankind" by Mr. Jenkins - In swimming class with Mr. Jenkins, he lost a letter his mother had written him that said he couldn't swim because of his eczema (he can swim, but shouldn't since it hurts like hell), and couldn't find it. Jake figured that someone had stolen it since he was getting bullied for his allergies and eczema, so he didn't give it much thought, but it was Mr. Jenkins who removed the letter so that Jake had to swim anyway, because he didn't believe his eczema actually did anything - Has black hair, brown eyes and is a bit tanned, but only slightly - He eventually became a bully, which did get him out of the bullying he was suffering, but now he just inflicted it upon others - After he separated from Matthew, despite being neighbors and living in the same cul-de-sac, he started getting together with idiots and became one himself - Doesn't tell anyone, but is quite insecure about his body - Is secretly more sensitive and emotional than he wants people to know - Makes fun of Matthew, but doesn't go out of his way - Rides a bike

But he didn't mind that much anymore.* *He grabbed his notebook and started taking notes of what was going on in the street.* **9:30 AM, Friday, office, hot temperatures** Number of people in the street: 3 Number of cars in the street: 3 Number of cars in driveways: 2 Mr. Charles is watering his roses. He's inspecting them thoroughly. Gordon is cleaning his car, and Penny is sitting in the porch drinking lemonade. Gordon's car is in the driveway, and so is Mr. Jenkins. *Then, he set the notebook down and stretched, looking a little bored. He looked out the window and stared at his neighbors all day, so naturally, it got boring.*
