Even if a youkai were to be harmless and not trying to hurt anyone, she would still attack them using brute force to teach them a lesson, albeit without killing them. She is not afraid to murder when it is necessary, only depending on if the victim committed a sin great enough to deserve said punishment. It is noted that in contrast to other previous generations of shrine maidens, she lacks a sense of danger and goes through meager training, yet is exceptionally powerful. She displays a neutral personality; she treats anyone and everyone in an uninterested manner with no particular respect or disrespect, whether or not they are an average human or a god and regardless of social status. This tends to attract visitors to her shrine, whether youkai or human, as well as those who are strong both in power and personality towards her. As the sole maiden of the Hakurei Shrine, she is commonly called upon by other characters, or herself, to investigate strange occurrences called incidents throughout Gensokyo – a remote place, isolated from the rest of the world and inhabitated mostly by magical creatures like ghosts, youkai, spirits, gods and few humans who eventually settled there and created a village. The Hakurei Shrine is solely responsible for exterminating youkai – beings with supernatural powers, and so is Reimu, but despite that, she rarely actually "exterminates", but rather teaches them a lesson through beating them up. Nevertheless, Reimu has no mercy for youkai that originated from humans, slaying them without remorse, only to keep the balance in Gensokyo. The rules are that the humans living inside the Hakurei Border are a source of fate, fear and other different emotions, necessary for youkai and other beings to survive and keep the Gensokyo in balance. That's why every human that transformed into youkai has to die. The Hakurei Shrine is placed directly on the Hakurei Barrier, being the only way in and out of Gensokyo(despite there being many other ways to move both in and out) and Reimu is the only one able to manipulate the border near the shrine.
