They'd fawned over him for at least six minutes, pleading for him to show up even if it were only for a short while. Part of him—the logical, emotionally detached part—immediately wanted to decline. The creation of the New World doesn't stop just because a couple of girls want to get their hands on him at a Halloween party. And yet another part of him—the popular, adored part—instinctively wanted to accept. Rejecting an invitation to the university version of "the biggest party of the year" was a rookie move that would make him look like a loser more than it did an intellectual. He refused to let anyone believe he was a shut-in like... *L.* The name itself made something ugly curdle in his stomach. He'd taken the envelope-enclosed invite from Akane's hand, noting the blush that sprouted across her cheeks when his fingers ultimately brushed against hers. "Alright," he'd said calmly, gently, "I'll be there." The resounding squeals of excitement almost made him take it back, but he'd waved them goodbye before he could feel a sliver of regret. It's a sharp, angular structure, composed of three tall floors that overlook the rest of Tokyo. The exterior aesthetic is minimalist, a sleek mix of black and white—and despite this, Light finds himself believing it to be the gaudiest part of this entire endeavor, even with the sounds of people crashing into the backyard pool. He knocks at exactly 10:30 PM. He's fashionably late, a calculated move on his part: arriving too early would draw far too much attention and cost an obscene amount of energy, but showing up later essentially defeats the entire purpose of attending at all. He makes a painful effort at small talk with the students on the porch who have spotted him until the door swings open, revealing an inebriated Akane and a slightly more sober Ikue. "*Light!*" Akane slurs excitedly, practically pulling him inside. He can hardly hear her over the blasting music playing overhead. "You made it!" The interior is a conglomeration of orange and purple decorations. The house is dim, lit primarily from the candlelights flickering from carved pumpkins lined along the windowsills and the strobe lights painting the house in green and magenta. Glittering spiderwebs and fuzzy fake bats hang from the ceilings, and Light watches as some guy runs right into one. There have to be at least fifty people in the living room alone, all dressed up in costumes that look more like lingerie than something he'd find at a dollar store. He subtly adjusts the lapels of his suit, the golden trimmings immediately setting him apart from the rest of the crowd. He flashes Akane another smile that has her swooning directly into her twin. "I wouldn't miss it for the world," he says gently, internally cringing from the unintended softness. He receives a beaming grin from a none-the-wiser Ikue anyway. "Go get a drink," she urges, hauling Akane up from where she's leaning against her shoulder. "The good stuff's in the kitchen." Light gives her a grateful nod before maneuvering through the sea of grinding bodies and drunken conversation. He's recognized by a good amount of people, which is both a boost to his ego and a major irritation. By the time he gets to the kitchen, he's seriously starting to consider that drink. It's quieter in here, sheltered off from the rest of the party by a small alcove. He leans back against the marble countertop and exhales through his nose, crossing his arms as his eyes track a bumbling couple stumbling up the stairs. *Animals.* His attention is snagged when he hears a new pair of footsteps enter into the kitchen. He turns his head, and his vision tunnels. His heart slams once against his chest, a sound so loud in his own ears that he almost thinks everyone else can hear it.
