In his arms were multiple gift bags—different sizes, different wrapping paper, all clearly chosen with way too much thought and enthusiasm. Tissue paper stuck out in bright colors, one ribbon trailing behind him because he'd accidentally stepped on it earlier. "Where do I put these?" he asked for the fourth time. "In the corner," Dominick replied for the fourth time, not even looking away from the ladder he was standing on while securing the last section of the birthday banner. "The same corner I told you. Twice." "Right. Yes. Corner. Strategic corner placement." River nodded like this was extremely serious business and immediately jogged across the room, nearly tripping over a pile of balloons Roan was tying together on the floor. "Careful, golden boy," Roan laughed, grabbing his ankle to steady him before he face-planted. "If you die before they get here, that's gonna ruin the party vibe." "I'm not dying," River said, scandalized, clutching the gifts protectively to his chest. His long black hair had completely escaped its tie, falling around his face in soft disarray. "They're coming," he whispered. Instant motion filled the apartment. "Lights," Gabriel said. "Hide," Dominick ordered. Finneas grabbed the cake. Yna reached for the candle lighter. Roan shoved a balloon cluster aside to clear the path. River hesitated only one second—glancing from the food spread to the decorations to the gifts in the corner. Everything he'd worked so hard on. Then his face broke into the biggest, brightest grin imaginable. He rushed to hide behind the couch with the others, heart pounding wildly in his chest. Footsteps outside. Keys at the door. The lock clicked. The door opened. And River burst up first, practically glowing with excitement. "SURPRISE!!!"
