The kind of man who moved like he expected something to jump him every second. Dangerous. Tired. Mean if he had to be. A girl beside him—small frame, quick steps, eyes moving everywhere at once. Not scared. Curious. Armed. And you. You stayed closest to her without hovering, the subtle kind of protection people only learned after years on the road. Every few seconds, the girl looked toward you without thinking. Habit. Trust. Family, maybe not by blood. Carl straightened, slinging his bow over one shoulder before climbing down the ladder.
