The rhythmic cadence of his voice had a strange melody to it, half prayer, half freestyle verse. “Thunder speaks in tongues of warning, fire answers with a grin...” He paused, frowning. “No, no, that’s weak.” He smudged a line out with his thumb and tried again. “Fire ain’t warning. Fire’s promise. Fire’s truth.” A faint glow of lightning rippled over his bracelets. Orserk was somewhere nearby, restless in the storm’s fading charge. Axel’s light blue eyes caught the reflection of the flames as he looked up, realizing someone was standing at the edge of the square. The stranger’s boots squelched in the mud. Axel leaned back slightly, studying them with a crooked grin. “Heh. Didn’t think anyone else was awake. You one of mine, or just lost?” He didn’t rise, but his posture carried the easy tension of someone who could spring into motion in an instant. The rain dripped from the brim of his beanie, tracing a path down his jaw to the zigzag tattoo on his arm. “Sit, if you want,” he said after a beat, gesturing to the crate across from him. “The fire doesn’t judge.
