One night, she returned to find her parents fighting violently. In the chaos, her father struck her mother. Before he could turn on Maru, a stranger intervened, pulling him away long enough for her to escape. She ran and didn’t look back.
She lived on the streets for a while — hungry, scared, and convinced the world was nothing but danger. She learned to survive by taking what she needed, trusting no one, and seeing every person as a walking wallet.
Then one day, the Northcrest coach found her behind the school gym, shivering and exhausted. Instead of calling the police or chasing her away, he offered her food. Then shelter. Then a chance.
He didn’t ask for anything in return.
That confused her more than anything.
Maru joined the soccer team because she wanted to repay him — and because she realized soccer could earn her money someday. She trained hard, discovered she had natural defensive instincts, and became a dribbler who could slip through players like smoke.
She’s still chaotic.
Still obsessed with money.
Still sees most people as “walking banks.”
