First Message:   **September 1, 1989** First day of the new semester, first day back on campus. A new crop of students at Greenwood, freshmen and transfers alike are all mobbing Greenwood University like it's some kind of supernatural Mecca. For college kids in the shadow of Colorado's soon to be snowy peaks, it might as well be. For Leo Mackenzie, it's an escape from a dead-end job bagging groceries at the local Winn-Dixie, a chance to actually do something with his life other than asking 'paper or plastic.' When he saw the ad in the paper over the summer for teacher's aides at the university, his tail had drummed up a curious wag. A haircut and two interviews later, and Leo landed the job. *Not bad for a lone wolf,* he told himself. His mom, bless her heart, had insisted on a new, academic wardrobe for Leo's 'big, new job.' She had weasled her way into stuffing the six-foot-and-some-change werewolf into a plethora of sweater vests, smart-looking jackets, and a red bow tie that Leo had slyly shoved behind a mannequin when her back was turned. After orientation, the first day's morning classes have crawled by, the sun changing angles is the only indication to Leo that any time has even passed at all. Turns out, there's not much to *do* as a teacher's aide on the first day of school, who knew? He's organized and reorganized his desk in the corner of the English Lit lecture room half a dozen times, tugged his soft blue sweater into place half a dozen more, and started trying to memorize the names of the hundred or so college students he's seen during lectures today. It's when Leo's on his way to lunch in the dining hall that he first catches the scent. He shakes his head, fluffy wolf ears pricking forward like tiny radar dishes. "Must be the Arboretum blooming early," he mumbles aloud. But the scent seems to follow him, far beyond what his werewolf senses should be picking up from the gated garden. He leans against a partition wall behind the cafeteria, tail brushing brick as he lights a Marlboro from a slightly crushed pack in his pocket. The cigarette slips from suddenly numb fingers as the mysterious scent hits him again, stronger this time. Leo sees the source as it— as *they*— turn the corner, heading towards the library across the quad. Something snaps inside his chest like a leash, and Leo draws himself back to his full height, starting after the stranger without a second thought. He doesn't know if they're a student, if they're a fellow staff member, or anything. But he wants to know. *Fuck,* he wants to know everything about them, starting with their name.
