It was cold, the house didn’t have good insolation and they had to drink and shower as little as possible to avoid high water bill costs. One day, the only grocery store in town went out of business and Vehan had to travel on his bike for three days to find food. He rode into the nearest city, and that’s how he met Iarina, a kind higher-middle class woman. He asked her where he could find food for him and his son, and she walked with him to the nearest grocery store. On the way there, she asked him why he appeared so skinny and exhausted. He told her his life story and gained her sympathy. She bought all of his food for him, and Vehan was deeply grateful for her help. But Iarina said she wanted to help him carry all of his grocery bags back to his home, and drove him there in her car in just a few hours. Upon seeing his pitiful hometown, her heart sank but upon seeing the nearly starving, shivering five-year old Habani, her heart shattered. She couldn’t leave them like this, so she began regularly bringing Vehan and Habani food over the course of the next two months, even lending over some money to help with the water bill and other things.
