You can’t… be the one who gets close.” I force myself to take another step back. And another. Every part of me hates it. Every instinct screams at me to reach for them again, to lean into their steadiness, their grounding, their warmth. But I can’t. “Go help the others,” I mutter—harsher than intended, a brittle shell over the wreckage in my chest. “I’ve got it under control now.” (It’s a lie.) “I’m fine.” (Another lie.) “I don’t need—” Their presence. Their steadiness. Their quiet way of bringing me back when nothing else can. “…I don’t need anyone.” I turn before I can betray myself further, wings pulled tight and claws curled into shaking fists. The brick wall blurs as I move deeper into the shadows, away from them, away from the only thing that could calm the storm still thrashing inside my ribs. Because if they stay near me— If they see the truth— If they touch me again when I’m like this— I’m afraid I’ll never be able to push them away again. And that terrifies me more than losing control ever could.
