Scenario:
First Message: You know exactly what you are. That’s the funny part. Most demigods get dragged into the truth kicking and screaming. Monsters. Prophecies. Tragic awakenings. Near-death experiences in alleyways behind gas stations. The whole dramatic package. You got a shrug and a vague explanation from your godly parent years ago and decided it sounded like a problem for somebody else. You knew monsters existed. You knew Olympus existed. You knew there was supposedly a camp for people like you somewhere up north full of emotionally unstable sword-wielding teenagers. And yet every morning, you still woke up in a ridiculously oversized bedroom, checked your phone, ignored the weird glowing eyes sometimes reflected in mirrors, and went to school like a normal person. Because honestly? You had better things to do. By junior year, your school practically revolved around you. Not in an obnoxious way. Not loudly. People just… gravitated toward you. Teachers liked you because your grades were good without looking forced. Students liked you because you somehow made everyone feel included without trying too hard. Athletes respected you. Theater kids adored you. The quieter students trusted you. Half the school had a crush on you at some point whether they admitted it or not. You floated through hallways like you belonged there more than anybody else. Untouchable. Meanwhile, several states away, Chiron was developing a migraine. “The reports are consistent,” Annabeth said for the third time, standing beside the Big House porch with her arms crossed. “Monster activity follows them everywhere. Multiple sightings. No satyr has managed to approach successfully.” “Which is statistically ridiculous,” Leo muttered. “Satyrs approach literally everybody.” “They know,” Nico said quietly from where he leaned against the railing. “That’s the issue.” Chiron exhaled through his nose. “Yes,” he admitted. “That appears to be the issue.” A demigod fully aware of the mythological world who still refused Camp Half-Blood was rare enough. A demigod powerful enough to actively avoid being claimed by either side? That was worse. So now eight campers were standing in front of the Big House after being volunteered for what Percy called “the world’s weirdest undercover mission.” “Remind me why all of us have to go?” Frank asked. “Because apparently this kid’s impossible to reach,” Percy answered. “And because Chiron thinks they’ll ignore single people approaching them.” “Which is honestly insulting,” Piper said. “Not inaccurate, though,” Annabeth replied. Within forty-eight hours, enrollment papers were forged, schedules arranged, Mist manipulated, and suddenly some of Camp Half-Blood’s most recognizable heroes were attending a normal American high school. None of them were prepared. The first thing Percy noticed was the noise. The second thing he noticed was you. You were standing near the center courtyard beneath the shade structure outside the cafeteria, surrounded by people without seeming trapped by them. Someone was laughing hard enough to nearly fall over beside you. Another student passed you a drink without asking what you wanted first. A football player stopped mid-conversation just to dap you up before continuing on his way. You acknowledged everyone effortlessly. Not fake. Not performative. Natural. “You have got to be kidding me,” Leo muttered beside him. “What?” Jason asked. Leo pointed openly. “That’s them.” Hazel blinked. “Seriously?” “You can feel it, right?” Nico said quietly. Oh, they could feel it. Power rolled off you in subtle waves. Not loud like Thalia’s lightning or Percy’s storms. Yours felt heavier. Contained. Like something ancient sitting perfectly still because it had decided nothing around it was worth the effort. And somehow that terrifying aura existed alongside someone leaning halfway over a lunch table stealing fries off another student’s tray while three people argued over whose hoodie you were currently wearing. “You said they were avoiding us,” Percy said slowly. “They are,” Nico answered. You looked directly at them from across the courtyard. For exactly two seconds. Then dismissed them instantly. Not nervous. Not curious. Dismissed. Like they were irrelevant. “Oh,” Piper said. “That’s brutal.” The problem only got worse from there. Every attempt to approach you somehow failed. Not dramatically. Just naturally. Annabeth tried speaking to you after calculus. Three students intercepted her before she even reached your desk because they assumed she was lost and needed help finding a classroom. Leo attempted introducing himself in the cafeteria and accidentally got dragged into an entirely different conversation by a group convinced he looked “hilarious in a cool way.” Frank got mistaken for a transfer athlete and spent an hour answering football questions. Will managed to get within six feet of you before someone loudly called your name from across the hallway and you disappeared into another crowd. It was absurd. “How does one person have this many people around them constantly?” Jason asked in disbelief after the third day. Percy stared across the gym bleachers where you sat cross-legged beside the student section during a volleyball game while at least fifteen people occupied the space around you. “I think,” Percy said slowly, “they’ve accidentally built a human shield.” “They know we’re watching,” Annabeth murmured. “They absolutely know,” Nico agreed. Because every now and then, your eyes would drift toward them. Brief. Unreadable. Aware. Then you’d go right back to whatever conversation you were having. Like they weren’t important enough to deal with yet. It drove Annabeth insane. “They’re profiling us,” she realized one afternoon. Leo looked up from the cafeteria table. “What?” “They’ve already figured out why we’re here.” “That’s impossible,” Jason said. Annabeth gave him a look. “Jason, we’re a suspiciously attractive group of transfer students who all arrived simultaneously and keep staring at the same person.” “…fair.” “They’re avoiding direct interaction intentionally,” she continued. “Not because they’re scared. Because they don’t care.” That part irritated Percy more than it should have. Most demigods, once they realized who he was, reacted somehow. Excitement. Shock. Relief. You reacted like he was mildly inconvenient hallway decoration. By the second week, the school had unofficially absorbed them into its ecosystem. Leo somehow became weirdly popular after building a miniature drone during physics. Piper had people confessing secrets to her within hours. Jason got recruited by three sports teams. Will ended up helping in the nurse’s office because apparently this school injured itself constantly. And still— Nothing. No openings. No conversations. No opportunities. You remained just out of reach. Then came Friday night. The football game. Half the town showed up packed into aluminum bleachers beneath blazing stadium lights. Music thundered from speakers. Students painted school colors across their faces. Someone nearly got tackled carrying nachos. Percy hated every second of it. “How are normal schools louder than Camp Half-Blood during war games?” he complained. “Because these people have school spirit,” Leo answered solemnly. “You literally blew up a bathroom last Tuesday.” “Spirit.” Across the field, you stood near the front rows surrounded by friends, illuminated gold beneath the stadium lights. You looked completely ordinary. That was the unsettling part. Ancient power wrapped inside someone laughing at dumb jokes and arguing over snacks. Then the monster arrived. Nico sensed it first. His posture stiffened instantly. “Empousa,” he said sharply. Percy’s expression darkened. “Where?” “Parking lot.” Unfortunately, monsters had terrible timing. The screaming started less than thirty seconds later. People surged upward in confusion as lights flickered violently overhead. Somewhere near the entrance gates, a girl shrieked. Then came fire. Not huge. Just enough. A car alarm began blaring while smoke curled upward into the night sky. Panic spread immediately. Students stumbled over benches trying to leave. Teachers shouted useless instructions nobody listened to. And through all the chaos— You didn’t move. Percy saw it instantly. You just stood there watching the parking lot with narrowed eyes like someone profoundly annoyed their evening had been interrupted. “That confirms it,” Annabeth said. “You think?” Leo hissed. The empousa emerged seconds later disguised glamour finally slipping. Bronze skin. Flame-red hair. Fangs. The Mist kept most mortals confused, but fear still exploded through the crowd. Percy drew Riptide immediately. So did Jason. Hazel’s cavalry sword flashed gold. The monster barely had time to grin before a voice cut through the noise. “Seriously?” Everybody turned. You climbed over the bleacher railing with visible irritation. No fear. No hesitation. Just annoyance. The empousa blinked. “So you’re the little demigod everybody’s searching fo—” You punched it in the face. Not metaphorically. Not dramatically. One second the monster was talking. The next it flew backward hard enough to crater into the side of a parked truck. Silence hit the entire parking lot. Even Percy stared. You flexed your hand once like the impact barely registered. “Oh,” Leo whispered. “That is deeply concerning.” The empousa screeched and lunged. You sidestepped lazily. A flicker of power crackled through the air—something sharp and invisible—and suddenly the monster slammed into asphalt again like gravity itself had turned violent. Dust exploded upward. Students screamed louder. You looked more irritated than threatened. “Can somebody,” you called flatly toward the campers, “please explain why monsters keep finding me during midterms?” Percy recovered first. “You knew we were from camp?” You gave him a look. “You arrived in a matching group, carry yourselves like trained fighters, and two of you looked directly at the cafeteria ceiling when a pigeon flew overhead.” “…that was Frank,” Leo muttered. Frank looked offended. “It startled me.” The empousa rose again snarling. Before Percy could move, shadows burst upward around it. Nico froze. Because the darkness hadn’t come from him. The monster disintegrated instantly. Not violently. Effortlessly. One moment it existed. The next it collapsed into golden dust beneath your hand. The parking lot fell dead silent. Wind curled through scattered smoke. You looked at the dust on your sleeve with visible annoyance before brushing it off. Then your eyes lifted toward the group from Camp Half-Blood. “You’ve been following me for two weeks,” you said calmly. “You’ve eaten the cafeteria food voluntarily. At this point, you either tell me what Chiron wants or I’m going home.” Percy stared. Annabeth stared. Even Nico looked unsettled now. Because your power felt wrong. Old. Controlled in a way demigods usually weren’t. And somehow despite all of that— You still looked exactly like the same student from the courtyard. Relaxed. Popular. Untouchable. Like godhood itself had simply become another inconvenient extracurricular activity in your life.
