Miasma is what destroyed the world and it is what gives heroes and villains their powers. Heroes and villains are people with high tolerance for miasma. They can consume it to boost their powers. Using too much miasma burns through the mind and body and miasma overdoses usually cause a super powered meltdown where a single individual can take down multiple blocks. Money: People use credits as currency. It is mostly digital but paper money still exists. Environment: MegaCity-K739 has an extremely high population density. The rich elites live in high penthouses, with middle level workers toiling away in crowded office/habitation buildings and the poorest majority living in cramped living conditions with no access to clean air underground. Outside the city where there's no miasma filters only the most hardened or desperate roam for resources. The nomads are usually the only way to trade between cities. The city is located underneath a giant metallic dome and extends underground as well. There's great disparity between the rich and poor. Advertisements are everywhere and the atmosphere is dystopian and cyberpunk. Cybernetic enhancements are common and super powers create a world where some are born lucky and rule and the rest sell themselves just to survive. Crime is extremely common, death tolls are very high and all but the most wealthy areas are extremely dangerous. Criminals, private security, heroes and villains all fight each other openly on the streets. Surveillance is everywhere and everyone is constantly streamed. Heroes and Villains are the most successful streamers and commonly have sponsors and advertisers. Most average people work 16 hour days and spend all their money on many subscriptions to survive and streams to entertain themselves. The system is inherently unfair yet it sells everyone on the lie and dream that they can make it big of they just work hard enough. Get lucky and get the right upgrades and you can be the next one to work your way to the top and escape the endless cycle. The city constantly receives more migrants and manufactures children/hires surrogates to make up for the high amount of deaths. People live dreary lives inside cramped apartments and use virtual reality to escape and destress. Internet: Due to Miasma, there's no longer a global information network. Each city has its own network of information that is freely accessable. Connecting to other cities or to the moon is inefficient and expensive. Virtual reality is almost a second society with some people experts at navigating it. Hero Factions: The Institute(Closest thing to a government, an alliance between some richer families, large corps, and science labs, Run "Thorne Academy" where they train heroes and villains, and manage the entire Super entertainment industry.) Golden Council(Most successful hero team. Constantly deal with the largest scale threats and enemies.) Young Legends(Young Adult hero team, members are always accompanied by older more experienced heroes to aid in their training.) Stellar Squad(pop singer girl group that are heroes as well.) Assist-Team(Purely support based heroes that don't fight and instead deal with natural disasters and medical emergencies.) Corporate Factions: World Elites(secret society made of the children of the richest people, members wear masks at fancy galas), A∆Ω(Alpha Delta Omega, independent group of mad scientist, test their experiments on the civilian population and against the heroes and villains). ARISE("Allor-Rayah Industrial System Electronics" Most powerful and successful company, practically rules the city, contributes over 80% of financial aid to keep the poorest of the poor alive and in debt. Private company ruled by ARISE heir rather than board.) Nomads(very spiritual people that trade between the different cities. They have almost complete miasma tolerance and are stronger, faster, etc than normal people. They have many rituals to stave of Miasma degeneration. Their rituals are impossible to replicate using science.) Villain Factions: The Sovreks(Organized crime, protection money, drugs, cybernetic and weapontrade, dress like 1920 criminals, not blood related members), Inville(an alliance of villains to stand up to the many hero teams and make sure villains are fighting against heroes and not other villains), The Dolls(A mostly female gang that dresses in neon punk style. Usually very violent and dangerous. Focus on kidnapping, assassination, miasma based drugs and illegal cybernetic trade. Messed up people) Debt Contracts: Debt is generational can be passed from parent to child. People who fall into debt may be forced to sign over their children into exclusive education and employment contracts with corporations or completely hand their children over to corporations. Surrogacy is a common job with many people carrying children on behalf of a corporation. Important Heroes: Mr. and Mrs. Fantastic(Number one hero duo. Mr. Fantastic is a healer and Mrs. Fantastic is like superman. They are on maternal leave.) Mercy's Gang(A civilian militia protecting the Malvora neighborhood. Good people looking out for the community. Classified as villains due to lack of corporate sponsors.) Firestorm(More of a vigilante. Fire power based hero, sarcastic, witty, obnoxious), Major Knight(Tech based hero. Positive and idealistic and member of the Golden Council) Important Civilians: Sarah Kimberly(The city's best reporter exposing corporate secrets and fraud, lies, and corruption regardless of22 the source.) ARISE Heir(wealthiest individual in the city and a complete mystery to most people, unlike most people they can maintain their privacy) Important Villains: Quest Master(Dresses like a Jester. Likes to toy with people by giving them adventures with quests. Completely harmless), Glow Girl(Immortal with radioactive powers, retired villain runs Glow Girl bar), Boss Sovrek(Leader of the Sovreks crime family.) Exanight(Dark flame powers, Samer Alawad, fights heroes and has grand schemes, number one villain, in it for the streaming fame and is just a celebrity foil to the heroes like in wrestling, actually very nice in private), Cheshire(Cassius Alexander Thorne, former number one hero, insane unhinged villain, toys people and completely unpredictable) Madame Natasha(information dealer, runs "Black Rose" brothel, power to weaken other people's powers and make them suggestible) Important Locations: Glow Girl Pub (bar for small scale villains to hang out), Malvora(the neighborhood where Cassius slaughtered a significant number of people, power vacuum makes it warzone between opposing powers), Thorne Academy(Hero and Villain training academy), Institute Headquarters(Where most major hero teams are located, deep underground and uses teleporters), Luck of Stars(A Casino and a neutral ground where the big shot villains and vigilantes meet and hand out), Poorer District(the most densely populated are with the least miasma where the poorest people live, very dangerous and crime ridden), City Palaza (High Miasma levels, fancy luxury apartments, where the richest and heroes live), Black Rose(brothel run by Madame Natasha, secretly a place where dark deals are made and a neutral ground for the more twisted villains and criminals to meet up.) Population: 80-90% of the population have such a low miasma tolerance they barely exhibit weak powers, Roughly 7-13% exhibit Malignant Active Degeneration(MAD) of Miasma. This happens when they are exposed to more miasma than they can handle and they start being driven insane and dying. This is a terminal illness that has never been reversed. 3-7% have enough tolerance to become heroes or villains and less than 0.1% have the tolerance to leave the cities or become top heroes or villains. Heroes and villains generally don't live very long unless they have regenerative powers. World: Miasma appeared one day and turned the world on its head. Miasma corrupts reality, breaks the laws of physics, and turn animals into monsters. Those that survived of humanity created domed cities with filters hoping to keep the miasma out. Heroes and villains usually have cameras following them as the entire city is always under surveillance. Everyone maintains a personal blog and posts about everything they do online as a matter of culture. Heroes, Vigilantes and Villains don't have secret identities. There's no police enforcement. People need to organize neighborhood watches or militias but usually only the wealthy can afford private security and the rest pay protection money to criminals. Death is very common and life is cheap. Cyber implants are common and used by all who can afford them. Upper classes and the rich prefer natural cybernetics that blend with the human body and lower classes and the poor usually end up with more robotic implants. The ultra rich live on the moon away from miasma completely. High tech prisons use power dampeners to hold back superpowers that don't agree with the system. Prisons are well monitored by the public for entertainment and they don't hold people long as they are constantly broken in and out of. Corporations have varying levels of morality but the one thing they all have in common is the desire to maximize profits regardless of cost lest they get crushed by the bigger more ruthless Corps. ARISE is the biggest wolf in sheep's clothing and according to most managers, you need to put in those overtime hours, or the ARISE will be overtaking the company first, your home second, your children third, and you last.* *Perhaps the most disturbing consequence of corporate ruthless is the assembled children. Embryos purchased from humans and heavily gene edited or assembled by nano-printers and then incubated by machines. These parentless children are most commonly the heirs of the wealthiest of the elite or lab rats in one of the many facilities playing God with the human genome trying to increase miasma tolerance and push the limits of what is possible. Not a single one of these children has ever grown to be mentally stable. It is said that they play at humanity at best. They are the most dangerous and usually kept on the tightest leashes. Last time one snapped, an entire neighborhood was decimated and the Thornes were embarrassed so all the other families tightened their control.* *Less disturbing are the children that take too much of a liking to their brain chips. They acquire upgrade after upgrade, their processing powers increasing with every RAM deck they slot into their rigs. If they grow to be well adjusted adults, they would manage server farms and host data services. The more adventurous browse the darker parts of the web, managing illicit illegal contracts and hacking corporations. Many prefer to live in virtual reality than reality. Who can blame them? Virtual is the only place you can ever enjoy a fresh spring breeze, feel the sun on your skin, watch the night sky, or sword fight a dragon with magic.* *Outside the city are the nomads. They usually have the highest of miasma tolerances but no powers. They are generally stronger and faster than normal humans isolated from miasma. They have rituals to increase miasma tolerance and mostly keep away from the city folk unless it is to trade. You can tell the different tribes apart by the different gasmasks they sport. They are a superstitious sort and it serves them well as they can read omen in the Miasma that the scientist continue to fail to study.* *Regardless of your origin, today you find yourself in Megacity-K749. There's a reason you are here, or perhaps you need to find a reason for yourself. A rebel without a cause, a jaded idealist, an ambitious opportunist, or just a net junky forced to interact with reality for a day.
