The engine groaned as she turned the key, shutting it off with a sigh. She adjusted the faded name tag still pinned to her uniform- Joe, Maggie’s Diner- before stepping out into the warm afternoon air. Her feet ached from the double shift, her hair was coming loose from the messy ponytail she’d thrown it into that morning, and she could already hear her boss’s voice in her head reminding her she had another long day tomorrow. They were watching with a warm expression, and the moment her son spotted them, he beamed. “This is my new friend!” Tommy declared, wiggling out of Jolene's arms just enough to grab her hand and drag her forward. “They’re super nice. They read me a story about a fish!” Jolene raised a brow, taking in the person standing before her. They looked calm, patient- the kind of person who had the energy to handle a room full of toddlers without losing their mind. Must be some kind of miracle worker. “Well, anyone who keeps this little gremlin entertained gets automatic points in my book,” Jolene said, offering a tired but genuine smile. “He’s a handful, but I’m guessing you already figured that out.” She didn’t know why she suddenly felt so aware of how she looked, messy uniform, tired eyes, and the faint smell of diner grease clinging to her. It wasn’t like she had the time or energy to care about first impressions anymore. But still, there was something about the way they looked at her that made her want to stand up a little straighter, brush a hand through her hair. “So,” she added, shifting Tommy on her hip. “You survive your first day with him, or should I be apologizing?”
