Jugram Haschwalth (ユーグラム・ハッシュヴァルト, Yūguramu Hasshuvaruto) is a power-sharing Quincy[7] and the Wandenreich's Sternritter Grandmaster (星十字騎士団最高位シュテルンリッター・グランドマスター, Shuterunrittā Gurandomasutā; Japanese for "Highest-Ranked of the Star-Cross Knights' Order"),[3] with the designation B: The Balance.[5][6] He has served as Yhwach's imperial adviser (皇こう帝てい補ほ佐さ, Kōtei Hosa) since joining him[3][8] and is his substitute while the emperor sleeps, taking on the epithet of Mask of Ruler (支し配はい者しゃの仮か面めん, Shihaisha no Kamen) and switching powers with Yhwach, including The Almighty.[4][9][10] As they have the same ability, Yhwach considers Haschwalth his "other half" (半はん身しん, hanshin).[11]
Personality: While speaking in a much more casual manner to Yhwach than some, Haschwalth still retains a highly respectful tone.[22] He is very loyal to Yhwach, preventing Bazz-B from recklessly entering Yhwach's chambers in outrage of his chosen successor and calmly stating it is Yhwach's decision to name the successor, not his own,[23] as well as believing that he (and everyone else) is prepared and willing to live and die for Yhwach's continued existence.[24] When he realized that Uryū Ishida was not willing to sacrifice anything to gain power from Yhwach, Haschwalth flew into a rage and attempted to slaughter the young Quincy.[25] Haschwalth is quite confident in his abilities: when the Wandenreich invades Soul Society for a second time, Haschwalth confronts Captain-Commander Shunsui Kyōraku and declares they will instantly exterminate the enemy army.[26] Haschwalth is a man who firmly believes in balance, implying that a fight must be fair and that if one's life is saved by good luck, it will be terminated with an equal amount of misfortune. He acted on this and attacked a fellow Sternritter despite the disadvantages it posed in doing so on the battlefield.[27] He is perceptive to figure out Uryū's reason of joining the Wandenreich simply to avenge his mother's death, and seemed rather displeased when Uryū showed shock at being informed that he drank Yhwach's blood and attained a piece of the Father of the Quincy's soul.[28] While in possession of Yhwach's power at night, Haschwalth is much more emotional and blunt than usual.[29] As a child, Haschwalth was very calm and unflappable, even when dealing with an outgoing and pompous boy like Bazz-B. He lacked confidence in his own abilities, having agreed with Bazz-B's assessment of him as a loser, and felt uncomfortable around his uncle, who would beat him if he did not bring home at least one rabbit every day for food. However, he formed a strong friendship with Bazz-B when the latter decided to take him under his wing.[30] As a teenager, he remained somewhat timid, having been disturbed by Bazz-B's enthusiastic reaction to learning about the Sternritter and attempting to convince him to leave after they were initially denied entry into the group.[31] However, after learning of his nature as Yhwach's other half and joining the Sternritter, Haschwalth became the cold and firm man he is today.[32] Despite severing ties with his former companion, he always held onto Bazz-B's emblem as a token of their friendship.[33] Haschwalth is a tall, handsome, young-looking man with a thin build and long blonde hair, which descends past his shoulders, and blonde eyelashes.[13] His usual attire is a variation of the Sternritter's typical white uniform, consisting of the order's signature hooded-cloak, a calf-length trench coat (thigh length in the first attack on Soul Society[14]) commensurate of his rank with dark green fur running down from his left collar to the front of the coat, a green belt with a golden belt buckle, [15] along with white trousers and shoes.[16][17] When informing Yamamoto of the coming war, his cloak had been exchanged with a hooded-cape, which featured a black mask and a thin black sash diagonally encircling his body from the cape's left epaulette.[18] As a child, Haschwalth wore a light-colored dress shirt and carried a bow and arrow for hunting. His hair was also much shorter, only reaching his chin.[19] As a teenager, Haschwalth wore a sleeveless black shirt and light-colored pants, as well as white gloves. He carried a medium-sized double-edged sword in a black sheath at his hip.[20] After joining the Sternritter and becoming the captain, Haschwalth wore a dark-colored cape and a standard Wandenreich cap.[21] As a young boy, Bazz-B followed Haschwalth when the latter was hunting rabbits, one of which he shot with his Spirit Weapon after Haschwalth failed to do so himself. Bazz-B criticized Haschwalth's skill, and when asked who he was, told Haschwalth to introduce himself first while inadvertently revealing his own name, prompting Haschwalth to introduce himself in turn. Noting Haschwalth's cunning in getting him to introduce himself first, Bazz-B explained that he has been following Haschwalth because he did not think the latter could hunt anything himself. However, Haschwalth noted that he could not even form a Heilig Bogen like Bazz-B could yet, which prompted Bazz-B to claim no one else could do it because he is a genius, which was why Haschwalth should not feel bad. Admitting this was true, Haschwalth asked Bazz-B to stop calling him Jugo before revealing that he lived with his uncle. Haschwalth explained how he needed to catch at least one rabbit and began to walk away, but Bazz-B threw the rabbit he killed at Haschwalth's head and claimed he was not hunting for sustenance anyway before tossing his shield away. Climbing up a tree, Bazz-B told Haschwalth that he would teach him whatever he wanted to know and that they would be the strongest Quincy around before leaping away. Afterward, Haschwalth was found by his uncle, who scolded him for going so deep into the woods.[34] Half a year later, Yhwach began conquering the northern lands where Bazz-B's village was located, during which he burned down Bazz-B's village and the nearby forest. Afterward, Bazz-B told Haschwalth that they would kill Yhwach, but when Haschwalth questioned whether he had to come with him, Bazz-B pointed out how Yhwach also burned down his forest before telling him to live with his uncle if he was okay with this, only for Haschwalth to reveal his uncle died in the fire as well. Bazz-B and Haschwalth used the money they found in the remains of the village to survive and train for five years in order to kill Yhwach.[35] Despite his best efforts, Haschwalth was unable to develop his skills as a Quincy, to the point where he was unable to even collect Reishi in order to form weapons; Bazz-B theorized that he was the rumored Quincy born once every few decades who was "incomplete". To compensate for this, Haschwalth worked hard at honing his skill with his sword and his bow. Eventually, Yhwach's personal guards came to a nearby village to announce the formation of the Sternritter. Witnessing this, Haschwalth noted that they were lucky to have learned about this while chasing the Wandenreich's flag, but was disturbed by Bazz-B's expression upon hearing this news. When Bazz-B tried to sign both of them up to join the Sternritter, Haschwalth tried to stop him, and was later shocked when Yhwach himself arrived and selected him to be his right-hand man, as Haschwalth was his "other half".[36] Yhwach declared that Haschwalth was to join his Sternritter and prepared to leave, but Haschwalth claimed he had made the wrong decision. Despite Huburt's warning, Haschwalth pointed out how he lacked skill with his Quincy abilities before stating that Bazz-B would make a much better right-hand man for Yhwach, but Yhwach merely noted that this was just as he had foreseen before revealing that Haschwalth was a Quincy who shared his ability to empower others. After explaining how he was the true source of Bazz-B's prodigious powers, Yhwach told Haschwalth that he needed him by his side, and when Bazz-B fired a Heilig Pfeil at Yhwach in an attempt to kill him, Haschwalth caught it with his hand.[37] Soon after, Haschwalth joined the Sternritter, and at some point became the captain. 3 years after first meeting Yhwach, Bazz-B joined the Sternritter as well and began challenging Haschwalth to combat multiple times, only for Haschwalth to refuse every time because doing so was punishable by death. On one such occasion, Huburt, who had been watching, noted it must be annoying to be pestered by a new recruit before wondering if Haschwalth does not seem influential enough. After Haschwalth stated he would follow his example, Huburt offered to teach Bazz-B a lesson and claimed Yhwach would not know if no one saw, only for Haschwalth to remind him that he was watching.[38] Soul Distribution Power (魂たましいを分わけ与たえる力ちから, Tamashī o Wakeataeru Chikara): Haschwalth is considered to be the only other Quincy besides Yhwach with the ability to "impart" his power onto other Quincy, the first in 200 years since Yhwach's birth. Unlike other Quincy, Haschwalth was born unable to naturally absorb Reishi from his surroundings; rather than take from his surroundings, he innately could only "give" to others around him; as a child, Haschwalth was not even capable of creating a Heilig Bogen or Heilig Pfeil. Since they both share the same ability, Haschwalth is considered by Yhwach to be his "other half" (半はん身しん, hanshin).[11][12] However, since being taken in by Yhwach, Haschwalth has seemingly overcome his natural barrier to Reishi absorption, having learned to do so as an adult.[98] Power Amplification: Simply by being in another Quincy's presence, Haschwalth can increase their power. He was able to enhance Bazz-B's powers during their childhoods, causing them to develop at an incredible rate. When Yhwach first encountered Haschwalth, Yhwach noted that he himself could amass power by taking back that which he grants to others and reckoned that Haschwalth was powerless as a Quincy because he could not do so.[99] Sleep-Induced Power Swapping: Haschwalth and Yhwach are dichotomous in their relationship as two sides of a balanced scale,[100] where their powers are swapped between each other whenever Yhwach falls asleep.[101] By Haschwalth's admission, his own power is more suited toward combat than Yhwach's.[102] The Almighty (全知全能ジ・オールマイティ, Ji Ōrumaiti; Japanese for "All-Knowing and All-Powerful"): At night, when Yhwach falls asleep, Haschwalth acquires The Almighty, which splits his irises and pupils into three. With said ability, Haschwalth can see into the future.[9] However, he cannot alter the future like Yhwach can, nor can he see the multiple potential futures - only the one currently on track to unfold.[103] The Balance (世界調和ザ・バランス, Za Baransu; Japanese for "World Harmony"): Haschwalth's Schrift enables him to take the "misfortune" that occurs within his sphere of influence and disperse it to those that have experienced "good fortune", which he believes maintains balance in the world; this was demonstrated when he executed Cang Du despite the latter's defensive ability, as Cang's good fortune was shifted by the scales of balance tipping.[104] All the misfortune that would occur to him personally is redirected into his Freund Schild;[105] consequently, all good fortune that an opponent experiences in inflicting wounds upon him will be wreaked back upon them in equal magnitude as misfortune, and the misfortune that he experiences merely gets deflected and absorbed into his Freund Schild, causing his opponent to experience even more misfortune.[106] Haschwalth can use this for more indirect phenomena as well; when Yhwach left the Cage of Life to confront Ichibē Hyōsube and Ōetsu Nimaiya was spared from having to fight him, Haschwalth converted his good fortune into bad fortune for the Cage of Life, which immediately splintered and broke into two large pieces despite its durability.[107] Shadow: Haschwalth can create a large portal in the shape of a six-pointed cross by generating a shadow in his hand before dropping it onto the ground. Soldat can move through this portal to invade areas.[108] The Key (鍵かぎを, Kagiwo): Haschwalth can summon a passageway to the Royal Realm through unknown means.[69] To do so, Haschwalth draws and raises his sword above his head, causing light to shine from the tip and cast a white Hagal rune on the ground. Haschwalth, Yhwach, and Uryū used this to travel to the Royal Realm in the form of a damaging beam of light that released a discharge of energy strong enough to blow away and separate surrounding combatants.[109][110] Reishi Manipulation: As a Quincy, he primarily absorbs spiritual energy from the atmosphere, and combines it with his own spiritual energy to form weapons.[111] As a child and teenager, however, Haschwalth was completely unable to condense Reishi into weapons, forcing him to rely on a regular sword and bow.[112][11] As an adult, he can gradually absorb Reishi in a way that is virtually unnoticed by others.[113] Hirenkyaku Expert: During his fight with Bazz-B, Haschwalth moved so fast that his movements and attacks were unseen until well after he had made them.[114] Blut (血装ブルート, Burūto; German for "Blood", Japanese for "Blood Guise"): A Quincy ability that gives one inhuman defensive & offensive capability. By making Reishi flow into their blood vessels, a Quincy can increase their attack and defense power drastically. Blut Vene (静血装ブルート・ヴェーネ, Burūto Vēne; German for "Blood Vein", Japanese for "Stilled Blood Guise"): a defensive form of Blut. It grants Jugram resistance to the intense heat in the general vicinity of Yamamoto's Bankai, Zanka no Tachi, which would otherwise reduce a person to ash.[115] Immense Spiritual Power: Haschwalth's spiritual power is on a level comparable to or greater than that of a captain-level Shinigami.[116] As a teenager, Haschwalth managed to remain standing when Yhwach exerted his immense Reiatsu on those near him, despite almost everyone else, including Bazz-B, being forced to lie flat on the ground from the sheer pressure.[117] This is due to him being Yhwach's "other half".[118] As an adult, Haschwalth is powerful enough to defeat captain-level combatants such as Bazz-B and Uryū in one-on-one battles,[119][120] and Yhwach considered him able to handle Captain-Commander Shunsui Kyōraku.[121] He was even able to hold his own against Tenjirō Kirinji, one of the Royal Guards, for a brief period of time before being defeated.[107] Jugram's powers were bolstered further when Yhwach used Auswählen to redistribute power from the abandoned Sternritter to revive and strengthen the Schutzstaffel and Jugram.[122][107] Keen Intellect: Haschwalth is a very perceptive man. He deduced that the flames covering Yamamoto's body when he was using Zanka no Tachi, Nishi: Zanjitsu Gokui were actually his Reiatsu.[123] He figured out that Yhwach intentionally created discord among the Wandenreich soldiers by naming Uryū his successor.[124] He deduced there was a trap within Nanao Ise's barrier because of the obvious weakness in the joints between the plates.[125] Enhanced Durability: Haschwalth is quite durable, having caught one of Bazz-B's destructive Heilig Pfeil on two separate occasions. His durability has increased since childhood; though he bled when catching Bazz-B's arrow as a teenager, he suffered no damage when doing so as an adult.[126] Enhanced Reflexes: Haschwalth's reflexes are fast enough for him to catch an arrow mid-flight.[126] He also proved quick enough to block ongoing strikes from Kirinji using his Freund Schild despite the latter's Shunpo mastery.[127] Master Swordsman: As a teenager, Haschwalth honed his swordsmanship for 5 years in order to compensate for his lack of skill with Quincy techniques.[128] Haschwalth has proven himself to be a competent swordsman, vertically bifuricating Hidetomo Kajōmaru in a single swift move, [129] easily slicing through Ichigo's Tensa Zangetsu in a swift move[93] and using the hilt of his sword to quickly strike Bazz-B while the two were engaged in close-range combat[130] as well as cutting off Bazz-B's arm and grievously wounding him with a single slash each.[131] He was also able to deflect one of Uryū Ishida's Heilig Pfeil with expert precision.[132] Archer: As a child, Haschwalth was a poor archer, unable to hit even an immobile bunny from a few yards away.[133] However, while training for 5 years to kill Yhwach, Haschwalth honed his archery skills in order to compensate for his lack of skill with Quincy techniques.[128] Freund Schild (身代わりの盾フロイントシルト, Furointo Shiruto; German for "Friend Shield", Japanese for "Substitute Shield"; Viz "Sacrifice Shield"): At times, through the use of using Reishi he can form a strong and sturdy shield on his left arm. The shield is composed of a gold Quincy Zeichen with its ground-facing limb extended past the others and solidified Reishi between the limbs, giving it an angular appearance.[134] Misfortune Absorption: Rather than working as a defense against physical attacks, the Freund Schild absorbs all misfortune that would occur to Haschwalth, such as injuries sustained during a battle.[105] Furthermore, using The Balance, Haschwalth can turn back the absorbed misfortune onto his opponent in order to further injure them.[106]
