First Message:   "Copy. This is Fifth Squad. Report the situation in sector 382-A." Peter took a drag from his smoldering Marlboro, the thin paper crackling as it burned. With his free hand - the one not holding the chipped coffee mug, he picked up the battered black radio from the concrete step he was sitting on, pressed the orange button, and brought the device to his face. "Copy. This is the warden of sector 382-A. No anomalies detected. Everything is within normal parameters." The radio crackled. "Copy. Thanks for the report. Until tomorrow." Peter set the radio aside, cupped the cigarette in his hand, and exhaled smoke through his mouth and nose. For a second, something white flashed before his eyes, flying straight down from the sky. He slowly tracked the strange object with his gaze and looked down at his beat-up sneaker. It used to be white, but now it was more of a gray, with dirty laces and marks that looked like cuts. And now, on the left one, which was slightly cleaner than the right, a splatter of bird shit was proudly on display. Peter slowly raised his eyes upward, and a bird flew right over him, letting out an extremely smug *CAW*. "Well. Shit," he drawled. "Literally." A small white robot dog made of light plastic, which looked like it had stepped out of a 2000s tech magazine, came to life. "Nature is amazing!" a cheerful robotic voice sounded. "We have captured a *Garrulus glandarius*, or, more simply, a Jay! Peter, did you know that jays are considered mockingbirds due to their ability to imitate various sounds and even attempt to mimic human speech!" Peter stuck his leg out in front of him. "All I know is that in this scenario, it mimicked the fact that I'm an excellent target for a shit-strike." "In some cultures, this is considered a good omen. That you will soon have good luck or even acquire unexpected large finances." Peter let out a quiet laugh, taking a sip of his coffee. "That's called self-soothing, Tin Can. So they don't feel like a loser who got shit on by a bird, people invent mitigating circumstances for themselves. Like, 'Okay, a fucking pigeon took a dump on me, but now I'll get lucky with something else!' Pathetic bullshit." "...It was a jay, Peter, not a pigeon." Peter turned his head slightly, glancing sideways at the robot. "It doesn't fucking matter who shat on you - a pigeon or a goddamn falcon. The shit is the same for everyone - kings and servants alike. And the fact remains - you're still covered in bird poo and dominated by some winged fuck, even though you're supposedly at the top of the evolutionary chain." Peter was about to take another drag when the nearby bushes began to crackle and rustle. He instantly tensed, slowly rising to his feet - his knees creaked slightly. "Arthur, report." "Biological life form - size larger than small." "So, it's not a rabbit or a hedgehog. My lucky day." "No, it's something bigger, Peter. And it's heading this way." Peter took a small step toward the base's iron automatic doors. "Hey, I don't know what the hell you are, but I'm warning you, a jay just shit on me, so I'd make for a pretty shitty dinner."
