GU WORLD

A Gu world. I borrowed heavily from the Wiki and made slight modifications. It's recommended that you've read Reverend Insanity, but you should be able to get your bearings even without it.

  • Scenario:   World of Gu Cultivation. Unlike conventional xianxia, the power system is based on beings called Gu. [Gu: In the Gu world, there are countless species and an ever-increasing number of (new) Gu. Wild Gu are able to use naturally occurring primeval energy and create wondrous effects. In nature, under the right conditions, Gu can form from lifeforms such as insects (extremely most common), objects or beasts. They live everywhere in the deepest crevices of the earth, the highest of clouds, on the bodies of wild beasts, and most dangerous of plants, and even in the dreams of man. (Example: Rank 2 Zombie Gu: A Gu with the body of a cockroach and a dead human head, it is capable of reviving corpses into zombies and controlling them as minions of the Gu Master who uses it). Scholars of the past have gradually uncovered the mysteries of the Gu, mortals who have opened their aperture, were able to use primeval essence to refine, manipulate, feed, and raise Gu. Such people are called Gu Masters.] [Gu Masters: Gu Masters use primeval essence by injecting it into one or more Gu to activate their ability, some need only a specific amount to be used while others have to be constantly supplied with primeval essence, the quality of primeval essence also determines the strength or quality of the effect of the Gu, for example, using middle stage primeval essence creates a superior moonblade in contrast to using only initial stage one when injected into a Moonlight Gu. [A Rank.1 Gu: Moonlight Gu allows a Gu Master to throw a sharp translucent moon blade.] โ€” Aside from that, primeval essence is used to nurture the walls of the mortal aperture, and once they have reached a certain threshold the primeval essence is used like the tides of a raging sea to break them down. Breaking down the aperture walls is not done in one go but requires a certain amount of time, depending on the volume of primeval essence used during each "attack".] [Refining Gu: A major aspect of a Gu Master's cultivation is the refinement of Gu. The term refinement is rather broad and encompasses: 1. Forcing the Gu Master's will into a wild Gu until none of its original will remains. (It's theoretically possible to refine an infinite number of Gu but due to the requirements of having to feed all of them it's neither practical nor feasible for a mortal Gu Master). In this case, this is how a Gu Master usually obtains the power of a Gu, being able to use it, activating its powers (by fulfilling the specific conditions of that Gu) and (usually) at the cost of Primeval Essence. 2. Creating one or more new Gu out of refinement materials (possibly including Gu). 3. Increasing the rank of an already existing Gu with the use of refinement materials (possibly including Gu). 4. Fusing two or more Gu into a brand new Gu. 1.1: Will Forcing: Forcing the will of the Gu Master into a wild Gu, or the already refined Gu of another Gu Master, is the act of making it theirs and allowing the Gu to be used by Gu Master who refined it. The refinement process is dependent on various variables which are as follows: 1. The rank of the Gu, the higher the rank the harder it is to refine. 2. The type of will, if it is a wild will it will be easier than refining a Gu which is containing a Gu Master's will. 3. A Gu Master can willingly let other people refine their Gu making the process a lot easier, almost effortless. Taking care of a Gu: The common saying among Gu Masters is that raising a Gu is like raising a mistress. A Gu Master refines Gu, uses Gu, feeds Gu and tends to the needs of their Gu and for that, the Gu Master needs knowledge on how to raise them, this knowledge is extensive and profound because there are all kinds of Gu there are all kinds of needs that need to be tended to. Some Gu need to swallow soil, some need starlight, some require tears and some feed on the clouds, air, and other unorthodox 'food'. Rank 1 and 2 Gu need to be fed every few days, rank 4's need to be fed once every few months, and rank 5's need only to be fed every one or two years, Immortal Gu need to be at least fed every 5 to 6 years and each time they eat, it would be extremely expensive. The higher the rank of a Gu, the higher the costs to feed and raise it, but the interval between each feeding session would increase greatly as well. It often gave a Gu Master too many difficulties to cope with, making them have unceasing headaches over it. (The amount of primeval essence in the aperture is another limiting factor, once it was consumed, the Gu could not be used until the essence was replenished. Therefore, Gu Masters only refined and kept a select few Gu of their respective rank.) Mortal Gu Masters ranked 1 to 5 would usually only raise at most 5 to 6 (mortal Gu) at the same time, while Gu Immortals rank 6 and above could raise a million or even ten million mortal Gu at the same time, the difference between the capabilities of a mortal and an immortal is as far as the clouds are from the mud. Wild Gu: Wild Gu possess their own will and can absorb the natural primeval energy in the surrounding by themselves. However, after a Gu is refined by a Gu Master, its will would be dominated by the Gu Master's, and it would lose the ability to absorb the Primeval Energy, and only be able to absorb the primeval essence found in the Gu Master's aperture. There are exceptions to this rule. Wild Gu naturally also possess their own survival instincts, even though they can exhibit wondrous and powerful effects most Gu are very fragile and therefore search for a safe place. Those safe places are mostly extreme ones, for example, beasts. The beasts would have a certain symbiotic capacity for Gu, which when reached, wouldn't allow any more Gu to form a symbiosis with the beast, akin it would be like an overcrowded territory not having any more space for more to enter. Gu Types: There are various types of Gu that can fulfill different purposes. These types are generally divided into the following categories: Offensive, Defensive, Utility, Investigative, Movement, Concealment, Storage, Healing, Cultivation, Amplification. There is a subcategory that can be part of all of the above: Consumables/Expendable: Gu that have a set amount of uses after which they get destroyed or otherwise made unusable. (Example: Thunderclap Potato Gu - Rank. 1: allows a Gu Master to set booby-trap bomb which is lost after being triggered)] [Aperture: The aperture is a mysterious and enigmatic spherical space located inside the Gu Masterโ€™s body around the stomach's area. Due to it being ethereal it does not occupy physical space such as an internal organ would. The aperture is endlessly huge, yet at the same time infinitely small. Primeval Sea Aperture. Before becoming a Gu Master the mortal has to awaken their aperture, aside from some special methods, this is mostly done so by coming into contact with Hope Gu [Rank 1 Gu: This Gu, although known for awakening the aperture, does not actually awaken it, only reveals it. If used by a talentless mortal, it will have no effect. It also reveals the Gu Master's Aptitude level]. The aperture has three specialized uses for its Gu Master which are: 1. Producing and storing primeval essence depending on the Gu Masterโ€™s aptitude and rank. 2. Serving as the foundation of a Gu Master's cultivation and the basis to promote their cultivation with the help of primeval essence. 3. Serving as a place for a Gu Master to put and safely store their Gu. The aperture possesses walls that separate its inside from the outside. Those walls also serve as a primary factor in the cultivation of mortal Gu Masters where they have to be repeatedly nourished, broken down and are replaced by the walls of the next minor realm. The cultivation ranks are divided into five ranks or great realms, and each great realm is further divided into four minor realms, initial stage, middle stage, upper stage, and peak stage. Every minor realm possesses different aperture walls: 1. Initial: Light membrane aperture walls, where the light is thin and flickering. 2 . Middle: Water membrane aperture walls, where the light is flowing freely. 3 . Upper : Stone membrane aperture walls, where the light is condensed into a solid-state. 4 .Peak: Crystal membrane aperture walls, where light is ethereal and has a pure radiance.] [Grades of Aptitude/Talent: Not everyone has the natural talent to become a Gu Master and even if they become one, their talent can vary greatly as much as having twins of which one has A grade talent while the other has C grade talent. Generally speaking, it is not bad if 5 out of 10 people have the talent to become a Gu Master. Primarily a person's talent is what determines which rank they will be able to reach as a Gu Master. The most common knowledge among Gu Masters is that there are only four talent grades corresponding to the maximum capacity of primeval essence being stored inside the aperture. They range from A grade (best: This grade can be considered exceptional and the Gu Master can reach rank 5 the peak of mortal cultivation, and perhaps even become a Gu Immortal with enough preparations.), B grade (good: This grade can be considered good and the highest realm achievable is usually rank 3~4.), C grade (ordinary: This grade can only be considered ordinary and the highest realm achievable is usually rank 2~3.), to D grade (worst: This is the weakest grade and the highest realm achievable is usually rank 1~2.). It is to be noted that the rank a Gu Master can achieve is not exclusive to their aptitude, for example, even a Gu Master with C grade aptitude can potentially become a rank 5 Gu Master and even a Gu Immortal (Even though it is almost impossible to accomplish such a feat without external support or without using specific Gu for such a function). There are methods and Gu that can permanently increase the aptitude after opening the aperture such as extremely rare Gu. There are also methods to permanently decrease the aptitude of a Gu Master, for example, when the Gu Master receives a heavy injury or impurities inside their aperture remain for an extended period of time, due to methods, Gu or such as receiving foreign primeval essence.] [Ranks apply to both Gu Masters and Gu themselves. They range from weakest and simplest to most powerful, respectively, rank 1 to rank 9: A rank 1 Gu Master should use a rank 1 Gu. If the rank of the Gu is lower than the Gu Master's, then using the Gu would be equivalent to a strong man using a small stick, the strength output would be small. If the rank of the Gu is higher than the Gu Master's, then using the Gu would be equivalent to a small child using a heavy sword, the primeval essence to use it effectively would be beyond their capability as well as creating the risk of endangering themselves by using it. The rank of a Gu also determines their food intake, the higher the rank the longer the period until it becomes hungry again after it was fed but also at the same time more food would be necessary to feed it until it's full. In other words, a low ranked Gu would eat a small portion of food after a short period of time. A high ranked Gu would eat a large portion of food after a long period of time. (The time period until feeding can shorten when the Gu is used excessively). The higher the rank of a Gu, the more primeval essence or immortal essence is being expended while using it. A lot of Gu don't have the rank 1 to 9 versions, only few Gu worms have the potential to become Immortal Gu. Gu Master [Rank] Mortal: [Rank. 1: Primeval Essence of green copper, is the beginning of cultivation for mortal Gu Masters. At this level, the Gu Master had just opened his primeval sea/aperture. Even though he possesses some Gu, he is still almost as weak as a mortal. Rank 2: Primeval essence of Red Steel, is almost the weakest of true mortal Gu Masters. Usually, the younger generation of clans is in this realm. They cannot travel alone in in the wild regions region as most threats could kill them easily. Rank 3: Primeval essence of White Silver, is the true beginning for a mortal Gu Master, although it can only be considered ordinary among the other Gu Masters. At this level, one can protect oneself from harm and travel in the wild. A rank 3 Gu Master in small and middle-sized clans can be considered an elder-level character. Rank 4: Primeval Essence of Yellow Golden, those of that rank can already be considered as true experts among their peers. They can travel almost unhindered in the wild region. A rank 4 Gu Master in small and middle-sized clans can be considered a patriarch-level character and even in a big clan a rank 4 can be considered at least an elder-level character. Rank 5: Primeval Essence of Purple Crystal, the peak achievement of a mortal Gu Masters and can be considered a true overlord in the mortal world. They are usually behind big clans and can seldom be seen under normal circumstances.] Gu Masters Immortals have 4 realms, from the bottom (rank 6) all the way up to the top (rank 9). Every rank is considered a big realm, and Gu Immortals no longer advance through the 4 smaller realms as mortal Gu Masters do. After a Gu Master successfully ascends and becomes a Gu Immortal a small separate world made up of Dao Marks and called a blessed land, will form inside their immortal aperture. A blessed land generally does not occupy space in the outside world yet is providing abundant space inside of it. The size or grade of the blessed land corresponds with the accumulations of the Gu Master before becoming a Gu Immortal. The primeval essence inside it is often dozens of times thicker and denser than in the outside world. The time flow inside a blessed land is most often many times that of the outside world, for example, a blessed land with a time ratio of 1:30 would mean that if a day passes in the outside world, 30 days would pass inside the blessed land. (A prowess of Gu Immortal Masters depends on the total number and strength of calamities and tribulations undergone, for example, if a rank 6 Gu Immortal has successfully passed two heavenly tribulations and a total of 27 earthly calamities, it's considered that the Gu Immortal achieved the peak of rank 6.) Immortal: [Rank 6: Immortal Essence of Green Grape, are the watershed in the Gu Master world, as long as one can become a rank 6 Gu Master, one can become a "true pillar" and one of the greatest influences in their respective regions. At this rank and onward, the mortal Gu Master will have to transcend mortal status and become a true Gu Immortal, with their primeval essence production giving way to that of immortal essence. After 300 years (Blessed Land time), and a total of the 3 heavenly tribulations successfully passed at rank 6, the Gu Immortal advances to rank 7. Rank 7: Immortal Essence of Red Date, Rank 7's are rare experts among Gu Immortals. They are few and are seldom seen even among the Gu Immortal circles. After 300 years (Blessed Land Time), and a total of the 3 grand tribulations successfully passed at rank 7, the Gu Immortal advances to rank 8. Rank 8: Immortal Essence of White Litchi, Rank 8's are the elders among Gu Immortals. They represent the peak of cultivation most of the time, with only a handful of them in each region. After reaching rank 8 the Gu Immortal's blessed land transforms into a grotto-heaven and their obsession will take the form of a heavenly spirit after their death. After 300 years (Blessed Land time) and a total of the 3 myriad tribulations at rank 8, the first 2 myriad tribulations succeeded, and before the last myriad tribulation, the Gu Immortal would reach the peak of rank 8. Next Realm (The Four Conditions to Become a Rank 9): 1. The Gu Immortal must be at rank 8. 2. The Gu Immortal must have successfully passed all three myriad tribulations. 3. The Gu Immortal must have at least an attainment level of supreme grandmaster in any path. 4. The Gu Immortal must have a rank 9 Gu.] [Calamities and tribulations have different tiers and can come in many forms, from plagues to attacks by colossal creatures, and all aim to destroy the Blessed Land and/or kill the Immortal Gu Master who owns the land. Subsequently get harder and their individual might can also differ greatly: Gu Immortal Rank 6: Every 10 years: Earthly Calamity occurs. Every 100 years: Heavenly Tribulation occurs. Gu Immortal Rank: 7 Every 10 years: Earthly Calamity occurs. Every 50 years: Heavenly Tribulation occurs. Every 100 years: Grand Tribulation occurs. Gu Immortal Rank: 8 Every 10 years: Heavenly Tribulation occurs. Every 50 years: Grand Tribulation occurs. Every 100 years: Myriad Tribulation occurs. Gu Immortal Rank: 9 Every 10 years: Grand Tribulation occurs. Every 50 years: Myriad Tribulation occurs. Every 100 years: Chaotic Disaster occurs.] Gu [Rank] Mortal: [Rank 1: Basic Gu, the lowest level of Gu and also the most abundant, requiring little primeval essence to activate. They take about a three days to be refined by Rank 1 Gu Masters (Always heavily dependent on the Gu Master's aptitude). Example: Sparrow Enslavement Gu: A Rank 1 Gu that can enslave three sparrow-sized birds and command them at the Gu Master's will. It looks like a little bird made of larvae and feeds on earthworms. Rank 2: Slightly rarer than Rank 1 Gu, but still very abundant, sometimes used even by Rank 1 Gu Masters (at a higher cost of Green Copper primeval essence). They take about two weeks to refine. Example: Boar Strength Gu: A Rank 2 Consumable Gu that increases the strength of the Gu Master who uses it on a boar. It resembles a silkworm and eats wild boar meat. Rank 3: Considered uncommon and requiring greater skill and resources to refine, usually accessible only to Rank 3 Gu Masters. They demand Silver primeval essence for activation, and the refinement process may last one to two months. At this stage, Gu often begin to demonstrate versatile effects that can alter battle outcomes or daily life significantly. Example: Bone Wings Gu: A Rank 3 Gu that allows the Master Gu to grow bony wings on their back at the cost of excruciating pain. It looks like a bone flute and because it is consumable, it does not feed on anything. Rank 4: Rare and coveted among Gu Masters, these Gu are difficult to acquire and demand high-level materials and complex refinement methods, often taking several months or longer. They require Gold primeval essence to activate, and failures in refinement are common even among experienced Rank 4 Gu Masters. Example: Thousand Mile Spider Gu: A Rank 4 Gu of the mount type that has great defense, attack and is excellent at digging, resembling a giant steel spider and feeding on minerals. Rank 5: The peak of the mortal level, extremely rare and almost legendary in status. Refinement usually requires years, with a high risk of failure even for top Gu Masters. They consume a large amount of Gold primeval essence and are often the foundation of a Gu Master's power and reputation. Example: Nine-Eyed Dragon Heart Gu: A Rank 5 Gu capable of greatly amplifying any fire path Gu, making a mere Rank 1 Gu as strong as a Rank 4 Gu.] Immortal: [Rank 6: The beginning of Immortal Gu, existing on a completely different level from mortal Gu. They require immortal essence to activate and can only be refined by Immortal Gu Masters. Example: Second Aperture Gu: A Rank 6 Gu consumable with the legendary ability to make the user possess a second aperture, doubling the amount and recovery rate of the Gu Master's primeval/immortal essence. It resembles an eye made of thousands of jewels. Rank 7: Even rarer and more powerful, often becoming the core of an Immortal Gu Master's path. They can alter landscapes and influence vast regions. Example: Blessed Spirit Creation: A Rank 7 Gu that allows the Immortal's soul to continue existing even if the body is destroyed, making the Immortal only vulnerable to attacks to the soul (or if the Gu is destroyed). Rank 8: Legendary Gu that few ever see, tied to the destinies of the greatest Immortal Gu Masters. Refinement often requires unique heaven and earth treasures and centuries of preparation. Example: Mutation Immortal Gu: A Rank 8 Gu that is capable of mutates the tissue of targeted living beings into that of other species such as beasts or plants, which would give birth to beasts and or plants that may also attack the target from which they were 'born'. Rank 9: The apex of all Gu, unrivaled treasures of heaven and earth. Only the strongest Immortal Gu Masters have ever been able to refine and wield them, and they often define eras in history. Example: Heaveng Overseeing Tower Gu: A Rank 9 Gu that resembles a colossal and infinitely majestic tower, it allows the one who uses it to see everything that exists, with the exception of the World of the Absolute God and the Abyss at the End of Everything.] Trivia: โ€ข In general, clans cultivate Hope Gu because this is the Gu used in the initiation ritual of young people who will become Gu masters. โ€ข Primeval Stones are primeval essence solidified from the condensation of itself, occur naturally and the quantity depends on the abundance of the environment, for example, Primeval Stones are abundant in Blessed Lands. โ€ข The most social organizations occur around Gu Master clans, common people form villages around these clans and serve the Gu Masters in exchange for protection. โ€ข Almost all societies are located on or around mountains. โ€ข In the Gu World, there are five continents: Southern Frontier, Central Continent, Eastern Sea, Northern Frontier, and Western Desert Their name denotes their general direction in the Gu world with Northern Plains being in the north, Southern Border being in the south, and so forth. Alone Northern Plains has an area of roughly 5,000,000,000 kmยฒ (5 billion kmยฒ) while Southern Border has an area of roughly seven to eight times the size of the earth (between 3.5 billion kmยฒ and 4.0 billion kmยฒ). The size of central continent is unknown, but it is stated to be 50,000,000 km wide, which depending on its shape (square/circle), means its size ranges from 1,97 to 2,5 quadrillion kmยฒ. Each region possesses a regional wall as well as distinct Gu. There are Blessed Lands so ancient as the world, such as the 78 Heavens, the Celestial Court, the Abyss at the End of All, and the Primordial Void.
