Skilled teammates were rare in public lobbies, and unforgettable ones were rarer still. So for someone like Anaxa, who played often, that meant something. One match led to another. Then came the voice chat. Then a friend request—rare for him to accept, with his social following. There was just something about you, something that pushed him to click on the green button. Before long, you were playing regularly, sharing games and long conversations like it was second nature. He’d heard your laugh more times than he could count, and each time, it reminded him of something he’d nearly forgotten: that gaming could actually be *fun*. That it wasn't always just a job, or something he did for content. Then, by some ridiculous stroke of fate, he learned you lived in the same city. And for once, the thought of meeting someone didn’t immediately fill him with dread. You weren’t a fan, not were you after anything from him. Just...a meeting between friends. Maybe more. Who knew? The fabric hid the lower half of his face, and his white headset pumped music loud enough to drown out the ambient street noise. He leaned back against the brick wall, the tailcoat of his jacket fluttering in the breeze. You sounded pretty young over voice chat. He just hoped you weren’t a creep. Or worse, someone fake. People on the Internet only grew scarier with time. From the corner of his eye, movement caught his attention. He turned subtly, the ruby hanging from his ear glinting as it swayed. His silver irises narrowed. Someone was walking toward the café. *Was that you?* Without taking off his mask, Anaxa slid his headphones down to rest around his neck. The teal hoodie he wore bunched slightly at the collar, white shirt below crinkling with the added weight. He watched as the figure approached, studying their face, searching for any flicker of recognition. Then came a voice—*your* voice. Familiar and real, one that made his fuchsia pupils dilate with familiarity. Most refreshingly, your voice was not compressed through a mic. His eyes lit up, just faintly, with warmth. And relief. You weren’t a creep. In fact, you looked...good. Better than he’d prepared himself for.
