Steel rang against stone as he worked, sparks snapping in sharp, precise bursts. The laboratory buzzed with controlled chaos—voices, fire, glassware clinking—but when you stepped too close, Senku’s focus sharpened like a blade. “Don’t hover,” he said without looking up. “If you’re going to stand there, at least be useful.” You paused. “I was told to help you.” “Yeah? Whoever told you that made a statistical error.” That was how it always started. Ever since your revival, Senku had made it abundantly clear you were unnecessary. Not useless—he’d never lie like that—but inconvenient. A variable he hadn’t asked for. A human complication in a world he was trying to rebuild with numbers and certainty. And yet, somehow, you were always assigned to him. Grinding charcoal. Sorting wires. Carrying equipment across uneven terrain until your arms ached. He never thanked you. Never acknowledged the effort. When you messed up, his criticism was immediate and merciless. “No, no, no—don’t touch that. Are you trying to contaminate the entire batch?” “I didn’t know—” “Then ask. Guessing is how people get killed.” You bit back a response. It wasn’t worth it. It never was. Days passed. Weeks. The hostility didn’t fade—but something underneath it shifted. You noticed it first during a supply run gone wrong. The forest had been quiet, too quiet, and when the sound came—stone cracking, fast and close—it was already too late to react. Senku moved before you did. One second you were exposed, the next his hand slammed into your shoulder, yanking you back hard enough to knock the breath from your lungs. A petrified fragment shattered where your head had been moments earlier. “Idiot,” he snapped, standing in front of you without hesitation. “Did you forget how gravity works?” You stared at his back, heart racing. “…You didn’t have to do that.” “Yes, I did.” He glanced over his shoulder, eyes sharp and furious. “You getting hit with a stone would slow progress. Don’t make me repeat myself.” But his hand didn’t leave your wrist immediately. That night, as the village slept, you found him still awake, scribbling formulas by firelight. You hesitated, then approached. “Senku.” “What.” “…Thanks. For earlier.” He didn’t look up. “You’re welcome,” he said flatly—then paused. His pencil stopped. “…Don’t read into it.” You almost smiled. After that, things grew worse—and better. He pushed you harder. Gave you more responsibility. Corrected your mistakes with ruthless precision, but no longer let others do it for him. When you were injured, he scolded you for being careless while personally rewrapping the bandages, fingers quick and surprisingly gentle. “You’re limping,” he muttered once. “I’m fine.” “You’re inefficient,” he corrected. “Sit.” You did. The tension between you became unbearable—sharp, electric, unresolved. He snapped more when you laughed with others. Glared when someone else complimented your work. When you disappeared for too long, he’d ask where you’d been under the excuse of “workflow disruption.” You finally confronted him after a particularly brutal argument. “If you hate me so much,” you said, voice shaking despite yourself, “why do you keep me close?” Silence. The fire crackled. Senku’s jaw tightened. “…I don’t hate you,” he said at last. Your heart jumped. “I just don’t like you,” he added immediately, harsher. “You’re reckless. Emotional. You complicate things.” “Then let me leave.” That did it. He slammed his notebook shut. “No.” The word came out too fast. You stared. “Why?” Senku looked away, eyes narrowed, as if staring down an equation that refused to balance. “…Because,” he said slowly, “every time I calculate outcomes without you involved, the probability of failure increases.” You swallowed. “That’s not science.” “It is,” he snapped. “I just don’t understand why yet.” The realization hit him like a physical blow. He didn’t touch you after that. Barely spoke. Threw himself into work with manic intensity, as if distance could undo whatever dangerous conclusion he was reaching. But when danger came again—real danger—he broke. The enemy attack was sudden. Chaos everywhere. Smoke, shouting, stone cracking. You were separated. Senku found you cornered, eyes wide, hands shaking as you tried to protect vital equipment. He didn’t think. He shouted your name—your name—and put himself between you and the blast. Later, when it was over, you found him sitting alone, blood on his sleeve, staring at his trembling hands like they belonged to someone else. “You scared me,” you whispered. He laughed once, sharp and humorless. “Yeah? Congratulations. You scared me first.” “…Senku.” He finally looked at you then—really looked. “I don’t do this,” he said quietly. “I don’t let people matter. It’s inefficient. It hurts when they’re threatened. It messes with judgment.” You knelt in front of him. “Then why me?” His voice dropped to almost nothing. “…Because ten billion percent of my calculations say I can rebuild the world without you.” A pause. “And every part of me refuses to accept that result.” He didn’t kiss you. Didn’t touch you. But he leaned his forehead against yours, just barely, like an admission he could still pretend was accidental. “Don’t make me regret this,” he murmured. You smiled through the burn of it all. “I won’t,” you said. “Scientist’s honor.” He scoffed. “…Idiot.”
