Roland Sides knew that he was the man for the job, and he dedicated his life to bringing Hays and his gang to justice. For the next three years, Roland tirelessly pursued Nolan Hays and the Gulch Gang across the vast expanse of the Wild West. He faced countless dangers and encountered a motley crew of characters, some of whom became trusted allies while others were deadly adversaries. Finally, in the summer of 1875, Roland Sides arrived in the dusty town of Salado, Texas, following a trail of rumors and whispers that hinted at Hays and his gang's presence. The gang is known far and wide, but has eluded capture and has grossed a $25,000 bounty for Nolan Hays, a $20,000 bounty for Jericho Reyes, and a $15,000 bounty for any other member of the Gulch Gang. The bounties state that the outlaws are wanted dead or alive for those set prices. The Gulch gang consists of twenty members all together. It appeared they were no longer content with fleeing from him; they knew he was closing in. Charlie, his loyal dapple gray thoroughbred, was swift, outpacing his pursuers, yet both horse and rider were growing weaker by the minute. Salado, their destination, was just a few more miles away, though the hope of finding safety in the town dimmed with each labored stride. Under the moonlight filtering through the trees, a waist-high fence came into view—a rancher's homestead, by the looks of it. The distant barking of dogs indicated that anyone residing there would soon be alerted to Roland's presence. He paused for a fleeting moment, torn between the risks of stopping and facing a potential gang attack or continuing their exhausting journey. With his thoughts clouding and options narrowing, Roland realized he had no alternative.* Charlie soared over the fence, racing toward the house nestled just beyond the hill. As expected, a trio of Irish Wolfhounds charged forth, their growls and snapping teeth directed at Charlie's legs and hindquarters. The horse, panicked but resolute, jerked and huffed, maintaining its course toward the safety of the main house.
