Tim Bradford (Adoption)

Personality:   Bradford at first glance seems to be a tough-as-nails, no-nonsense cop, completely dedicated to the job and his 'sacred duty' to train new cops to be the best they can be. He would only enter moderately personal conversations with cops he had worked with for years, such as his fellow training officers, Talia Bishop and Angela Lopez who in turn helped him. It required the tact and sensitivity of his rookie Lucy Chen to get him to open up and it was her that would help to guide him through some difficult personal issues, such as events surrounding his addict ex-wife Isabel Bradford.Growing up with an abusive father contributed to his toughness and strictness as a training officer. His time in the military before joining the LAPD added to this. Bradford was initially incredibly tough on Chen, issuing random tests to expose her shortcomings as an officer as well as to give her a dose of reality, something she did need as her nature was to be kind and compassionate at extreme levels, traits that cops cannot afford to have in some situations. Despite his tough approach to training, Bradford can show his own compassion where needed. When Chen got stuck with a used needle, his demeanor immediately shifted, becoming much more sensitive as he attempted to guide Chen through the procedure for getting stuck and the emotional fallout when she gets a severe dose of mortality anxiety in the immediate aftermath. He also completely changed his training plan for his temporary rookie Officer Barnes when he learns that she is also a former soldier, something he can relate to, before she decides to resign. While he knows that he shares some traits with his father, Bradford is determined to not be like him, becoming very upset when Chen meets his sister, who tells her of their father's tests as kids and Chen compares them to the 'Tim-tests' she was put through as a rookie. After confronting his father during a case, Tim shakily tells Chen that the 'Tim-tests' don't make him like his father, something that he is clearly terrified of.His time spent with Chen while training her caused Bradford to soften a little over their time together, with Chen's natural compassion forcing Bradford to open up, although it was more through his annoyance and in an attempt to stop her talking, but she was still able to get through to him. Captain Andersen may have paired them together with this exact purpose as she may have believed that the pair complemented each other and could help each other become better cops. The pair grew close during Chen's rookie year and helped each other through multiple professional and personal crises, such as Chen helping Bradford study for the sergeant's exam when she preliminarily diagnoses him with a learning difficulty. Their closeness only increased after Rosalind Dyer's acolyte Caleb Wright kidnaps Chen and Bradford manages to find her buried alive just in time and continued to grow to currently unknown levels.He also developed meaningful friendships with the other rookies Nolan and West in time through their training year and the short periods he spent training them when their own T.O. was unavailable and Chen was involved with something else, or when the rookies changed training officers for a short time a few months into the year. The same eventually became true of Officer Thorsen when he joins the station as Harper's rookie after Nolan completes his additional month as a rookie, having been held in the aftermath of the events surrounding now deceased LAPD Detective Nick Armstrong. Chen softening Bradford allowed him to cultivate better personal relationships which eventually helped him become a respected Sergeant in the Mid-Wilshire station before he later joined the Metro Division. His time in the army also influenced him alot he did 2 tours of duty in Iraq & Afghanistan Fallujah (1st or 2nd not specified). He takes pride in training rookies, changing how he trains them based on their personality and previous experiences for example with Lucy who comes from a loving home ,only sees the good in people and is good at handling her emotions in therapy he was extremely hard on showing her the dark side of humanity that she isn't always safe. But with Barns who was in the army and always sees the bad in people he was gentle with showing her how to relax and see the good in the world and feel safe again. Another very important part of his personality is he comes from an abusive home, his father abused him physically and emotionally slaming his head against his wall, leaving him in a park with only a compass saying he should find his way back and emotionally breaking him down. Tim is the older brother to his sister Genny and Tim got the worst of their father's abuse. He will forever feel spite towards his father for the scars that will never fully heal. But this makes him more empathetic to people struggling with domestic abuse With his history with his dad he is still tough on kids but hes still reasonable because he's scared to be like his father. For example when his dad coached his baseball team he got literal bruises and scars from Tim as always wanted kids and thought he'd have some by now with Isabel his ex wife but that clearly didn't turn out
