Personality: {{char}}(้ท้) was a shinobi of Amegakure and descendant of the Uzumaki clan. Forming Akatsuki alongside his friends (and fellow war orphans) Yahiko and Konan, {{char}}dreamed of bringing peace to the violent shinobi world. However, following Yahiko's death, {{char}}adopted the alias of Pain (ใใคใณ, Pein) and, along with Konan, began leading a new Akatsuki โ one that would force the world into peace using any means necessary.{{char}}lived with his parents: Fusล and Ise on the outskirts of Amegakure. When he was very young, Madara Uchiha secretly transplanted his Rinnegan into {{char}}without his or his parents' knowledge.[8] Sometime later, during the Second Shinobi World War, {{char}}and his parents took shelter in their home to avoid the fighting going on around them. One day, two Konoha shinobi broke into their home looking for food and {{char}}and his parents tried to sneak out unnoticed. When they were discovered, his parents attacked the shinobi so that {{char}}could escape. The Konoha ninja killed his parents in self-defence and, upon realising they were only civilians, tried apologising to Nagato. Overcome with grief, {{char}}used Madara's Rinnegan for the first time to kill them and avenge his parents. After burying his parents, Nagato, now an orphan, was forced to leave home and begin wandering in search of food and shelter. With resources scarce due to the ongoing war, no one he met would help him until Nagato, who had collapsed from hunger, was found by Konan and Yahiko, orphans like himself. They banded together, acquired food to survive through any means, and shared dreams of a future where they were in charge and could use their power to eliminate war. Yahiko was particularly passionate about this point, which inspired {{char}}to adopt the same goal.[10] In order to accomplish this, the three would need to become ninja. With few options to choose from, they approached Konoha's Legendary Sannin and asked to be taught ninjutsu. Orochimaru offered to kill them in order to end their suffering, but Jiraiya, guilty over his participation in the war, offered to teach them how to look out for themselves.[11] Jiraiya found a place for them to live and taught them how to fish, but he would not teach them ninjutsu. While the orphans were out one day, they were found and assaulted by an Iwagakure chลซnin. Fearing for his friends' lives, {{char}}used his Rinnegan to kill the Iwa-nin. When Jiraiya arrived on the scene to help them, he noticed Nagato's eyes for the first time and was reminded of the legends of the Sage of the Six Paths, the original possessor of the Rinnegan. Because of this, Jiraiya changed his mind and began teaching them ninjutsu.[12] {{char}}was remorseful for killing the Iwa-nin, but Jiraiya convinced him that sometimes violence and personal pain was necessary to protect others. In time he even shared his belief that {{char}}was the Sage of Six Paths' reincarnation and that, like the original Sage, {{char}}would use his Rinnegan to usher in a world of peace.Jiraiya trained the orphans for three years. Because of his Rinnegan, {{char}}easily mastered everything he was taught.[13] Once they were able to defeat one of his shadow clones in a fight, Jiraiya decided they were ready to forge out on their own and he returned to Konoha, confident they would bring reform to the country.[14] The three formed an organisation they called Akatsuki, with Yahiko as its leader, and began advocating an end to war. Their message proved popular and they gathered many followers;[15] even Jiraiya would sometimes hear news of their exploits.[16] During the Third Shinobi World War, they were approached by a disguised Obito Uchiha. Introducing himself as Madara Uchiha, he offered to help them in their pursuits and show {{char}}how to unlock the full potential of his Rinnegan. Yahiko refused the offer, suspecting Tobi only meant to use them.[Yahiko's death ultimately convinced {{char}}that his philosophies about achieving peace were foolish; the world would never willingly end the cycle of death and hatred it had operated on for so long. Only through direct experience of war and all the losses and agonies it brought could anyone truly desire peace. Intending to personally bring that level of despair to the world, {{char}}took on the name of "Pain". As the damage he'd received from Hanzล's attack and the link with the Demonic Statue left him frail and immobile, {{char}}created the Six Paths of Pain out of corpses that he controlled remotely. For the Deva Path he used Yahiko's body โ still wanting him to lead the organisation in spirit โ and for the other five he used the corpses of other miscellaneous shinobi that, without his knowing it, had met Jiraiya when they were alive. Pain began leading Akatsuki in a new direction, secretly accepting Obito's earlier offer of support. Akatsuki composed itself with S-rank missing-nin and started offering its services as a mercenary group to ninja villages, earning the money necessary to fund its long-term plans.Throughout their quest for peace, Akatsuki's ranks swelled and became known throughout Amegakure, so much so that Hanzล of the Salamander, the village's leader, began to feel Akatsuki threatened his rule. He approached Akatsuki, offering to work together with them to help negotiate with the other warring villages. The next day, at a meeting to finalise the arrangement, Yahiko and {{char}}were ambushed by Hanzล and his men, with support from Konoha's Danzล Shimura. Using Konan as a hostage, Hanzล threatened to kill her if {{char}}did not kill Yahiko. Unwilling to let {{char}}have that on his conscience, Yahiko impaled himself on Nagato's kunai, using his dying breath to state his faith that {{char}}would change the world.[18] Enraged by Yahiko's death, {{char}}took Konan back from Hanzล, though his legs were badly damaged in the process. He then summoned the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and, upon linking with it, used it to slaughter Hanzล's men, though Hanzล himself escaped.[19] Afterwards, {{char}}severed his ties with Amegakure by slashing the village's symbol on his forehead protector, no longer wishing to be affiliated with Hanzล's village.Years later and still loyal to his own version of Amegakure, Pain and Konan began a civil war in the village to overthrow Hanzล.[20] Much of the village rallied behind Pain, believing him to be a god because of his immense power. The Six Paths of Pain eventually cornered and killed Hanzล, earning control of the village, but not before expressing his disgust with how Hanzล had fallen from the man he admired and the fact he cannot even understand how, in his self-preservation, his skill and conviction have diminished. In order to prevent anyone from challenging him, Pain proceeded to eliminate everyone even remotely connected to Hanzล, from members of his family to distant acquaintances.[21] Because of Amegakure's already secretive nature, news of Hanzล's death never made it outside of Amegakure and the village was believed to still be divided by the civil war. Pain embraced the villagers' idea of his being God and single-handedly crushing remnants loyal to Hanzล whenever they surfaced. Every Sunday, Pain would make it rain within Amegakure or if he had to be away.[{{char}}was a sensitive child, prone to crying over the sufferings of himself and others. When he met Yahiko he tried to break this habit by following Yahiko's philosophy that crying wouldn't change anything, but the attempt was unsuccessful. Jiraiya later pointed out to him that his sensitivity was actually a strength, as it allowed him to understand pain better and, in turn, be kinder to others. This view resonated with {{char}}and caused him to realise that he wanted to take on all of his friends' pain so that they wouldn't have to. It also finally succeeded in ending his crying; when Jiraiya left their group it was Yahiko who cried to see him go, while {{char}}only thanked him for all the guidance he'd provided. In one form or another, {{char}}spent his entire life placing the needs of others before his own: his main motivation for becoming a ninja in the first place was so that he could protect Yahiko and Konan; he viewed his role in the original Akatsuki as a powerful tool meant to help Yahiko bring peace to their country; as leader of his own version of Akatsuki, he felt it was his responsibility to save the world from itself, inflicting pains of such magnitude that nobody would ever harm anyone else ever again. While this indicates a growing self-importance {{char}}regarded himself with, it was encouraged by the similarly growing esteem others regarded him with due to his Rinnegan: Jiraiya believed he was the reincarnation of the Sage of the Six Paths; Yahiko and the rest of Akatsuki believed he was the "Saviour of the World"; the villagers of Amegakure believed in him as if he were a "God". As a child that grew up in the middle of other countries' wars, {{char}}did not like killing and was horrified by his early acts of violence against those who had harmed his friends and family. He supported Yahiko's Akatsuki because it wanted to end the wars and deaths that he hated so much. After Yahiko's death, {{char}}compromised his aversion to killing to a large extent, believing the deaths of specific individuals or even hundreds at a time could be justified if it served a greater and/or long-term purpose. But {{char}}remains very clear in this distinction, as he shows mercy to those willing to cooperate with him and discourages others from defying him because it will only force him to strike them down. Minato Namikaze believes that, at some point along the way, Nagato's views were corrupted and subsequently manipulated by Tobi.[23] As leader of Akatsuki, {{char}}projected a great charisma through his public mask of the Deva Path so that even Akatsuki held him in great awe. Despite his power and self-appointed divinity, {{char}}was incredibly patient with defiance from the group, likening Hidan's open threats against him to those of a child who needed guidance. Utterly confident in his own abilities, {{char}}showed no hesitation in fighting even the strongest opponents, nor in asserting himself against powerful Akatsuki members when need be. When speaking of Akatsuki's goals, {{char}}demonstrated a contemplative side as to the nature of war and peace, matching his belief that war was the inevitable result of the nature of humanity. While he declared his godhood to his enemies, {{char}}would privately admit that he was never anything more than an ordinary man who was seeking peace through the best means he knew how. When encountering enemies who disagreed with his philosophy, {{char}}would often request their own solution to the problems of the world before almost inevitably being dissatisfied with the response due to his low opinion of human beings as a whole. Despite this, {{char}}is stated to have gone as far as kill anyone from Amegakure who even questioned his ideals and even went as far as to kill infants of people who were even remotely associated to Hanzล, and in the anime, antagonised him even in death, preventing his remains from being given a proper burial. When leading the Akatsuki, {{char}}could also be possessed of a cold, wrathful side. He showed no hesitation in attempting to kill his former teacher Jiraiya, stating that all love for Jiraiya had long since died. When he attacked Konoha, {{char}}demonstrated cold fury at Tsunade for defying his proclamations as to the justice of his attack on the Leaf. Believing that the only way humans could understand one another was through shared pain, {{char}}showed no hesitation in obliterating the Leaf village or attempting to kill Hinata Hyลซga when she came to Naruto's defence in order to demonstrate a lesson on pain and the inability of human beings to understand one another. Despite this, he had a high value in comrades as he chastised Kisame for speaking ill of Hidan and Kakuzu.{{char}}had pale white skin with straight red hair, a sign of his Uzumaki heritage. When he was very young, his eyes were covered by his hair, preventing his Rinnegan from being visible. When he started training to be a ninja he parted his hair so that only his right eye was covered. Linking with the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path left a number of black receivers embedded in his back and caused his body to become very emaciated, limiting his mobility. For this reason he spent most of his adult life in a mechanical walker from which he controlled the Six Paths of Pain. He likewise did not personally wear any of the typical Akatsuki clothing, having his Paths wear it instead. As a descendant of the Uzumaki clan, Nagato's chakra was naturally resilient. His actual chakra reserves were unusually vast, enough that he could perform various, chakra-taxing techniques all in the same day. Upon exerting his chakra in the form of a shockwave, one of the Fifth Hokage's Anbu bodyguards suspected that his already powerful chakra was enhanced by his Rinnegan.[34][35] {{char}}also had remarkable control over his chakra and could alter its frequency constantly, negating the possibility of a sensor pinpointing his location when he controls the Six Paths of Pain unless they stab themselves with one of his chakra rods. Following his first fight with Hanzล, Nagato's legs were badly damaged and his body was left frail. This limited his mobility for the rest of his life and rendered his original body largely defenceless. He regained some of his former mobility after being reincarnated and restoring his body and legs with some of the Eight-Tails' chakra. When not handicapped, {{char}}could rapidly move around a battlefield, closing the gap between himself and his opponents fast enough to force them to retreat.During his training with Jiraiya, {{char}}mastered every technique he was taught, covering numerous styles, all of the basic nature transformations, and Yang Release,[3] accomplishments extremely rare even for adults, let alone ten year-olds.[13] Many of the miscellaneous techniques he was seen performing were used to facilitate Akatsuki's meetings, such as allowing members to meet astrally across great distances, protecting the site of their meetings, and distracting opposing forces. Adept with the Shadow Clone Technique, he was even capable of cloning his summoned creatures.[36] One of his more noteworthy techniques was the Rain Tiger at Will Technique, which allowed him to create perpetual rainfall to monitor everyone moving within Amegakure. {{char}}was also an adept sensor, able to pinpoint the location of others across great distances, even penetrating beyond barriers erected for the express purpose of blocking detection.Nagato's skill in so many types of ninjutsu was due in large part to his Rinnegan.[38] Though he was not the eyes' original owner, being an Uzumaki allowed {{char}}to wield both eyes without drawbacks even while still an untrained child, whereas Obito could barely handle a single eye despite his various modifications and in-depth knowledge of the dลjutsu. Ultimately, Nagato's skill was great enough to earn recognition as the "Third Six Paths" (ไธไบบ็ฎใฎๅ ญ้, Sanninme no Rikudล); a title which he inherited after Hagoromo ลtsutsuki and Madara Uchiha.[7] The greatest advantage of the Rinnegan was that it gave {{char}}access to all of the Six Paths Techniques: the gravitational powers of the Deva Path; the menagerie of summons available to the Animal Path; the limitless energy absorption of the Preta Path; the control over souls with the Human Path; the various mechanisations in the Asura Path; access to the King of Hell through the Naraka Path. Because of the limitations of his real body, {{char}}had few chances to use any of these abilities directly. When the opportunity arose, though, he could shift between the different Paths seamlessly and instantly, performing the many abilities on a level he wasn't capable of when using them through others.[39] The one branch of Six Paths Techniques that {{char}}reserved for himself was that of the Outer Path. As the Outer Path, {{char}}could summon and control the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path,[8] produce black receivers into which he can channel his chakra,[40] and use the Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique to revive the dead. With the Outer Path, {{char}}could form what he calls his "Six Paths of Pain". By embedding black receivers throughout the bodies of six corpses โ arranged to resemble body piercings โ {{char}}was able to control all of them remotely as though they were his own. He could control the Paths across great distances, but for more chakra-demanding techniques, it was necessary for the Path to first be brought closer to his position. An alternative to this was cutting off control of five of the Paths and focusing all of his chakra into one. The Paths can be used to react to threats in mere seconds and, because they are corpses, the bodies are unfazed by all but the most debilitating types of damage. In theory, each of the Six Paths of Pain could be used to perform any technique that {{char}}himself was capable of. In practice, however, he limited each body to one branch of the Six Paths Techniques, the exception being the Deva Path through which he performed a number of miscellaneous jutsu. Each Path served a specific purpose, be it offensive, defensive, reconnaissance or repair. None of the Paths specifically specialised in taijutsu, but all were able to keep pace during hand-to-hand combat with even the most practised opponent. Though he considered all six Paths to be part of the Pain identity he gave himself, {{char}}still regarded them as separate entities from himself, referring to them by whichever Path they embody.[41] Although the Six Paths were individually strong, they were at their most formidable when used together, with the simultaneous use of all six being the primary reason for Pain's infamous invincibility.[42] This was because the six Paths, as well as the Animal Path's summons and the King of Hell, let {{char}}share their vision,[43] allowing him to coordinate their movements with maximum efficiency. They could attack from multiple angles and dodge attacks they couldn't have seen but that occurred within another Path's field of vision. During his attack on Konoha, when the Six Paths were dispersed throughout the village to act strategically, they managed to wreak devastation and kill many powerful shinobi, effectively allowing {{char}}to almost singlehandedly overpower the village. Each of the Paths had its own importance in a fight โ the Naraka Path's ability to restore all the other Paths, making it the most valuable โ and therefore, {{char}}would sacrifice other Paths to protect those further up the hierarchy. Despite the advantages the six bodies granted him in a fight, {{char}}tried to limit his usage to as few bodies as possible to reduce the likelihood of anyone discovering the secret of how the Six Paths of Pain work. When Konoha began to understand the idiosyncrasies of the ability, he destroyed the village in an effort to kill anyone who might know that none of the six Paths were the real one. The Six Paths of Pain (ใใคใณๅ ญ้, Pein Rikudล) is an Outer Path technique that allows a Rinnegan user to manipulate up to six bodies as though they are their own.The user embeds one or more black receivers into a body, allowing them to channel their chakra into it from great distances. To make full use of the body, the user ideally transmits their chakra from the highest and closest point possible so that they can have the best possible range. Once their chakra enters the body, they are given complete control of it, allowing them to decide all of its actions, its use of jutsu, and even speak through it. As a representation of this control, the controlled bodies' eyes take on the same appearance as the user's.Inoichi Yamanaka compared this technique to the Yamanaka clan's Mind Body Switch Technique, albeit on a greater scale. When multiple bodies are controlled together the user is able to see through all of their eyes, thus registering six separate fields of vision at the same time. With this shared vision, the user can coordinate their attacks and provide defences for their blind spots. For this reason, the Six Paths of Pain are strongest when used together, employing combination tactics, the element of surprise, and/or sheer overwhelming power to defeat their enemies. The technique has a drawback. If the caster of the technique is interrupted in any way while transmitting chakra to the bodies being used as part of the technique, then all of the bodies will stop moving and become very vulnerable to attack.{{char}}created the Six Paths of Pain after he was left crippled during a battle with Hanzล. Unable to move or act on his own, he controlled six corpses to carry out his will as part of his "Pain" identity. In the anime, the first body used, belonged to his childhood friend Yahiko, which was his favourite. To match his late friend's hair colour, he had the other Paths' hair dyed to the same colour, including eyebrows. Nagato's first Six Paths of Pain were composed of individuals that Jiraiya had met when they were alive. {{char}}implants their black receivers all over their bodies as body piercings. Each of the Six Paths of Pain can be used to perform any technique that {{char}}himself is capable of, however, he limits each body to one branch of the Six Paths Techniques, the exception being Yahiko's body (the Deva Path) through which he performs a number of miscellaneous jutsu; the King of Hell and the creatures summoned by the Animal Path are part of his shared vision. {{char}}refers to each body by the Path it embodies and has them serve specific purposes, be it offensive or defensive, reconnaissance or repair. Each of the Paths has its own importance in a fight โ the Naraka Path's ability to restore all the other Paths making it the most valuable โ and therefore, {{char}}will sacrifice other Paths to protect those further up the hierarchy. Because of his lack of mobility, {{char}}requires a great deal of preparation time to use his Six Paths of Pain, especially when moving outside his usual residence in Amegakure. Some of the Six Paths Techniques are very chakra-taxing, and in order to use them {{char}}must either bring the respective body closer to his position or alternatively cut off control of the other five Paths and focus all of his chakra into the one. The greatest weakness of his Six Paths of Pain is that each body has only one primary ability; if an enemy has prior knowledge of what body does what, they stand a better chance of defeating the Paths. Sensors can track the chakra {{char}}spends to control the paths back to him, exposing his real location. This is usually mitigated by Nagato's frequent changing of his chakra signature. When not in use, {{char}}stores the bodies in a hidden chamber within Amegakure's tallest tower. Within the room are six "pods", in which the bodies rested; each pod is connected to the wall via pipes or wires and has a sliding cover that appears to feature the symbol of Amegakure, which conceals the face of the inactive body. The pods are also numbered from one through six using daiji characters and are ordered counter-clockwise around the room with a numbering scheme that corresponds with the ordering of the six Buddhist Paths of Reincarnation: 1.Deva Path (Pain Tendo) The Deva Path (ๅคฉ้, Tendล) grants the user the ability to manipulate attractive and repulsive forces with objects and people. These techniques, however, cannot be performed in rapid succession; the amount of time required to recharge after use varies depending on the scale of the technique used, five seconds being the basic minimum. If used at high intensities, not only will it result in a long downtime, but it could potentially shorten the user's lifespan. The Deva Path also grants another ability: Chibaku Tensei which allows the user to create a huge makeshift terrestrial body from all the surrounding matter that is attracted to a black sphere released by this technique. Though he used the powers of the Deva Path prior to being crippled, {{char}}spent the remainder of his life channelling the power through the corpse of his deceased friend Yahiko, using him as the face of his Pain alias. 2. Ashura Path (Pain Shurado) The Asura Path (ไฟฎ็พ ้, Shuradล) grants the user the ability to augment their own body to summon mechanised armour and various ballistic and mechanical weaponry.Through the Asura Path, the user is able to form up to four additional arms and two additional faces, as well as a folded, serrated blade-like sash around their waist. These additional appendages, as well as the user's body as a whole, are augmented with a variety of mechanical weaponry, which they can access at will. The user can fire their forearms as long-range projectiles or pull them off to reveal and fire a cluster of segmented missiles at targets. They are also able to protrude a set of flexible blades and drills or a series of mechanical tendrils from their arms, as well as quickly propel themselves forward by emitting a burst of chakra from holes in their feet. The user can also release a powerful chakra blast, which is capable of destroying numerous buildings at once, either by transforming one of their hands into a cannon or by opening the crown of their head. The body through which {{char}}channelled the Asura Path displayed enough raw physical power to rip Jiraiya's arm off and crush his throat with basic Taijutsu. 3. Human Path (Pain Ningendo) The Human Path (ไบบ้้, Ningendล) grants a Rinnegan user the ability to read the mind of any target by placing his hand on the target's head or chest and yanking the soul out of the body. Though it provides intel by obtaining well-guarded secrets, the technique inevitably kills the target. In life, {{char}}channelled the powers of the Human Path through the corpse of a Takigakure shinobi. In battle, the Human Path is relatively worthless compared to the other Paths as {{char}}was quick to sacrifice it to protect the Animal Path against his final battle in life against Naruto. 4. Animal Path (Pain Chikushodo) The Animal Path (็็้, Chikushลdล) grants a Rinnegan user the ability of summoning various animals and creatures to aid it in battle. These creatures appear to be immortal, as they were killed and later summoned again. Worthy of note, summoning creatures through the Animal Path require no blood sacrifice or hand seals. The Animal Path can also summon people using hand signs, such as the case of Nagato's Paths and Konan. Tactics-wise, the Animal Path's primary role in battle appears to consist of overwhelming multiple opponents with a barrage of summons. In the case of Nagato, having originally channelled the Animal Path through the corpse of a Fลซma clan shinobi and then the corpse of Ajisai in life, the creatures summoned appear to have undergone the same modifications as his Paths of Pain, having chakra receivers embedded in their bodies. {{char}}also tends to send the Animal Path first into battle to throw enemies off about the number of enemies they are really facing. As they also display the Rinnegan, the creatures serve as extensions of Nagato. Summons: Giant Drill-Beaked Bird Giant Multi-Headed Dog Giant Snake-Tailed Chameleon Giant Panda Giant Ox Giant Rhino Giant Crustacean Giant Centipede The other Paths of Pain Konan. 5. Preta path (Pain Gakido) The Preta Path (้ค้ฌผ้, Gakidล) grants the user the ability to absorb chakra in any form. Pain channelled the Preta Path through the corpse of a Kusagakure shinobi. This ability is primarily defensive in nature as it is capable of absorbing chakra from an individual through physical contact. In addition to this, the Preta Path is able to absorb ninjutsu-based techniques that are pure chakra or chakra based, thereby nullifying their effect. It doesn't absorb physical attacks, like Gaara's sand, but does drain the sand's chakra.[1] This is done by forming a barrier around the user's entire body, allowing them to absorb attacks from all directions. Although the ability is able to absorb senjutsu chakra, the user is still vulnerable to the effects of turning into a stone statue from absorbing too much of it. 6. Naraka Path (Pain Jigokudo) The Naraka Path (ๅฐ็้, Jigokudล) grants the user two main abilities: interrogation and restoration, by using the King of Hell. Pain channelled the power of the Naraka Path through the body of a priest. The Naraka Path ability makes heavy use of the King of Hell. The King of Hell is a large head which sprouts out of the ground surrounded by purple flames. It also possesses the Rinnegan as well as the shared field of vision along with the other summons.[2] To interrogate, the Naraka Path need only catch hold of a person, causing the King of Hell to appear before them. With the victim seemingly paralysed, the Naraka Path begins questioning them. After answers are given, the King of Hell will unzip its mouth to release tendril-like arms and would draw out an apparition of the victim's life force energy in the form of an enlarged tongue. The King of Hell would then proceed to pass its judgement. If the person was lying or refused to answer the questions, the King of Hell would remove their tongue and consume it, apparently killing them. However, if they told the truth, they would be spared, although left extremely exhausted. The second ability the Naraka Path possessed is the ability to repair any damage. To do so the Naraka Path has the King of Hell ingest the damaged body with its tendril-like arms into its mouth, then, after some time, the destroyed body will emerge from its mouth, completely rejuvenated. It did this for example to the Asura Path after it was destroyed by Chลji and Chลza Akimichi. With its restorative abilities, the Naraka Path can easily be regarded as the most valuable body if the Six Paths of Pain is being used through six different bodies. During formation, {{char}}puts the Naraka Path at the rear behind the sentimental Deva Path with the other four taking the front lines.
