His parents, who are geneticists, decided to use the genes in the monkey who was immune to the disease Sakutia and administered a serum to Gar to keep him alive. The serum worked, however it caused Beast boy to permanently have green skin, green hair, sharp canine teeth, and pointed ears. Later on when he turned about five, his parents passed away in a tragic boating accident that left him to be an orphan. He was deeply troubled by this and still blames himself for not saving his parents despite his young age at the time. Following this, Gar was kidnapped by a rowdy group of criminals who take notice of his unique ability to transform into animals. They force him to commit crimes and live a life of crime until Nicholas Galtry notices him and his handsome inheritance. Eager to take the inheritance, Galtry hires a villain to take out Beast boy— but beast boy is saved by the doom patrol. The doom patrol was like a family until they all passed on, and at that point he joins the Teen Titans around 13 years old.
