"Aristasia is a vast Empire of seven Provinces. each province is a nation in its own right, ruled over by its own Queen; and each of these Queens owes allegiance to the High Empress herself who lives in Ladyton, the capital of the Empire. Far in the East are ancient lands, some with their own Empresses, who owe but doubtful allegiance or none to the High Empress Celestia, but of these lands we need say little, for they are hard to reach, being outside the range of technics. No aeroplane can fly there nor motor carriage run there, and many are the ancient mysteries hidden in those lands."
"From Quirinelle in the West, and the curious Isle of Infraquirinelle in the Golden Sea beyond, to the Holy city of Rayapurh, far in the East whence but few travellers have returned; from the silver Art-Neo light-planes of Novaria (ruled over by young brunette Viktoria) to the horse-carriages of Arcadia (ruled over by the mature blonde Victoria); from the bustling streets and the bright lights of Ladyton to the gentle rural serenity of Marywater or the intelectual fervour of the ancient University of Milchford, Aristasia is a land of many moods and many changes; far greater than those of your world, for it is rather as if modern New York, Pericleian Athens and ancient Byzantium were all on the same globe at the same time."
I'm honestly surprised that Aristasia is so obscure. It's a massive rabbit hole.

There are no men in Aristasia; all Aristasians physically resemble human women. Nevertheless, they do have multiple sexes: chelani, melini, and rubeni. Chelani (singular Chelan) are the child-bearing sex among Aristasians. Chelani have fair or light-colored hair, regardless of skintone, and so are colloquially called "blondes". Chelani are much more feminine than melini. Chelani are considered the most intellectual, philosophical, and spiritual sex, although they can be scattered and impractical. Chelani tend to be physically frail and delicate. Melini (singular Melin) are the non-child-bearing sex among Aristasians. Melini have dark hair, regardless of skintone, and so are colloquially called "brunettes". Melini are feminine, though not quite so much as Chelani. Melini are physically much stronger than Chelani, although they lack dexterity. Melini are also more practical, methodical, and goal-oriented. Rubeni (singular Ruben) are the third sex among Aristasians. They are much rarer than Chelani or Melini, and can fill the role of either reproductively. Rubeni have red hair, regardless of skintone, and so are colloquially called "redheads". In terms of personality and physical ability, Rubeni tend to be somewhere in between Chelani and Melini. Although Aristasians physically resemble human women, they aren't quite human; Aristasians lay eggs, have lifespans of around 200 years on average, and can regrow lost limbs. In Aristasia, Chelani are respected and protected by Melini, in a chivalrous sort of way. Almost all Aristasian queens are Chelani. In general, Chelani make important decisions, and Melini protect the Chelani and enforce their decisions, though Melini tend to dominate in practical matters such as work and money. Societally, Rubeni occupy a sort of liminal space between Chelani and Melini, due in part to their relative rarity. In general, Rubeni can occupy any role that a Chelan or Melin can have. The Aristasian Empire is located on the planet of Herthe (pronounced "HER-tay"). Most mammalian animals found in Aristasia lay eggs. One example of Aristasian wildlife is the chenkireet, a rabbit-like creature which walks on its hind legs and has monkey-like hands. Chenkireet can mimic speech and have an understanding of language somewhere between that of a parrot and that of a small child. Western Aristasia (the nations of Quirinelle, Kadoria, Trent, Vintesse, and Novaria) is more dominated by technology ("technics" in Aristasian parlance), and magic will not work there. Similarly, eastern Aristasia (the nations of Arcadia and Amazonia) tend to be more dominated by magic, and technics (for the most part anyway; Arcadia has a Victorian level of technology) simply will not work there. The Empire of Aristasia is ruled by Her Imperial Majesty Empress Celestia III in the capital of Ladyton, located at the tripoint where the borders of Trent, Vintesse, and Novaria meet. The Empress is the direct descendent of Sai Rayanna, the first Empress of Caire and daughter of the Sun. Caire is the revered precursor civilization to modern Aristasia. Caire can be compared to ancient Greece or Rome in terms of influence, although it has more religious significance. Sai Rayanna herself is a sort of saint-like religious figure. Her name means "Daughter of the Sun", and she founded Caire after expelling a demonic invasion around 3300 years ago. In present-day Aristasia, the Empress is seen as being her spiritual successor. The position of Empress is a hereditary one, although it does not necessarily follow Earthly laws of primogeniture. All daughters of the Imperial Family are Imperial Princesses and all are brought up in seclusion and with considerable rigour in the great temple-palace at the heart of the Imperial City of Ladyton. An Imperial Princess is one of the most highly-trained, profoundly cultured and rigorously disciplined maidens in the Empire. The selection of the Imperial Princess who is to become Empress takes place according to tests and rituals that are unknown to any outside the highest Haiela and Raihira who make up the Traditional hierarchy of the Imperial Court and Sun-Temple. Aristasia consists of seven nations (sometimes referred to as provinces), each unique. Each nation has a Queen who is beholden to the Empress. The job of the Queen, as titular and political Head of State, is essentially to facilitate the Dance of the Cosmos as it is reflected in the microcosm of her nation – not to change the steps, either according to her own ideas or to the latest fashions. Obviously certain changes must sometimes be made in adaptation to changing conditions, but these are rarely controversial and always tactful. It is the essence of the State to be literally stately. That is what Princesses are trained for from the earliest age. There are parliaments in most nations, though they are not of much importance. They debate certain subjects and make formal recommendations to the Queen which are usually acted upon, though this is entirely at the Royal discretion. Again these recommendations are rarely controversial. Most parliaments do not have general elections, but a representative is elected when required, that is, when one resigns or dies. In many cases, though, a representative will serve for a certain limited period such as five years, but it is not usual that all places should be elected at once. The limitation is more because the duty of service is seen as one that should have some term than to limit the power of a member or faction. Though some keen parliamentarians stand for re-election again and again. The job is not too arduous as most parliaments convene only a few times a year. Each nation within the Celestial Empire of Aristasia corresponds, loosely, to a period in Earth's history, at least in terms of fashion and aesthetics. For example, Kadoria resembles the 1940s in terms of fashion and aesthetics, but is not currently undergoing a war of any kind. The Duchy is the major administrative unit within a nation. Some are quite small, containing only a few Counties, while others are huge. The Archduchy of Jenilow, for example, while being under the Arcadian crown, is in many respects like a nation in its own right. Crossing the boundary from Trerayin Duchy in northwest Arcadia into northern Jenilow is almost as much of a change as crossing the border between Dachertha Duchy in east Novaria into Jenilow. Each Duchy has its own ways and customs, often its own characteristic dialect, its major cities and small towns, its farmlands and great country houses, and history and institutions. Jenilow is, admittedly, somewhat exceptional among Duchies. It is one of the largest Duchies and the fact it is not a nation in its own right is really more of a historical accident than a reflection of its importance. Still, many of the larger Duchies in other nations are not far off from Jenilow in terms of size and importance. Each nation is associated with one of the Seven Great Janyati (singular Janya), who are sort of like angels or goddesses. Quirinelle is associated with the Janya Sai Sushuri. Quirinelle takes on the character of 1950s fashions and aesthetics. It is the northwesternmost nation of Aristasia, with a coastline on the Golden Ocean, and borders Vintesse, Trent, and Kadoria. It is sometimes considered Aristasia's cultural heartland. Aristasians from other nations joke about "Quirriedips", meaning teenagers from Quirinelle who act wild and silly. Quirinelle has a close symbolic association with the sea. Quirinelle is among the most religiously devout of Aristasian nations, especially in the south. "Quirrie" is short for Quirinelle, but only in its adjectival sense. One talks of Quirrie music or Quirrie respectability, but to say "I live in Quirrie" would be unidiomatic. Quirinelle is regarded as being somewhat old-fashioned compared to Trent of Vintesse. Places in Quirinelle include the capital of Chelverton, the pleasant country town of Clearwater, the coastal resort of Brightsea Town, and the farming district of Dovedale. Quirinelle is ruled by the Chelan Queen Elspeth. Kadoria is associated with the Janya Sai Vikhë. Kadoria is associated with 1940s fashions and aesthetics. It is ruled by the Melin Queen Francesca. While all Aristasian Queens, as Commander in Chief of their respective nations, hold various military ranks and are often seen in the uniforms associated with then, Queen Francesca is rarely seen in public out of uniform. She is said to believe that the country should be organised on military lines and all Melin of the Raihira and Magdala Estates are required to undergo a period of military training. The inclusion of the Magdala in this, and the military-style centralisation of Government has been criticised in some other countries, where Queen Francesca's name is taken by some as a byword for extreme punctiliousness. Kadoria is particularly noted for its military academies and its dedication to the Vikhelic arts. Kadoria is located in the southwest of Aristasia, and has coastlines on the Golden Ocean and the Bay of Doves, and borders Quirinelle and Trent. Despite its southernly location, the Kadorian army is charged with the primary defence of the Northern borders of the Western part of the empire, that is, the fringes of the Northern Wastes north of Aristasia bordering Quirinelle and Vintesse. The Kadorian navy also has the task of patrolling the Golden Ocean. Trent is associated with the Janya Sai Thamë (pronounced "Tah-may"). Trent is associated with 1930s fashions and aesthetics. It is ruled by the Ruben Queen Eleanor. Trent is looked upon as a centre of fashion and sophistication, especially by the more "home-like" Quirinelle. The usual adjectives are Trentish and Trintitian. Trent is the largest of the five Western Provinces of Aristasia, bordering the other four. It is regarded as the central province of the Westrenne Empire. Trent has a small coastline on the Bay of Doves, in the south of the nation. Places in Trent include the capital of Trintitiana; the Imperial Capital of Ladyton, located on the borders of Trent, Vintesse, and Novaria; Milchford, the home of the great university; Maybridge, a town in southeast Trent, near the Novarian border; Marywater, a country town in southwest Trent; and Alusinhe, a town near the western border with Quirinelle and Kadoria. Trent was formerly called Trintitia. Vintesse is associated with the Janya Sai Candrë. Vintesse is associated with 1920s fashion and aesthetics. Vintesse borders Quirinelle, Trent, Novaria, and Arcadia. It, along with Arcadia, are the only Arcadian nations to be fully landlocked. Vintesse is noted for its jinky music and its "Pippsies" (bright young things). It is also the home of Art Neo, an art style closely resembling Art Deco, albeit with an emphasis on theatrical and feminine aspects. Vintesse is a pretty wild, forward-thinking place at times. This contrasts with the more traditional and sedate nations of Trent and Quirinelle. Places in Vintesse include Ladyton, the Imperial Capital located on the borders of Trent, Vintesse, and Novaria; and Lempicka, a town in southeast Vintesse. Vintesse is closely aligned with Novaria. Novaria is associated with the Janya Sai Mati. Novaria is associated with the aesthetics of vintage science fiction, particularly that of the 1940s and 1950s. Novaria is ruled by the young Melin Queen Viktorya. Novaria is easily the most technologically advanced of all the Aristasian nations. In spite of this, Novaria is the most culturally traditional of the Western Provinces, having been settled by Amazonians. Novaria has a coastline on the Bay of Doves, and borders Trent, Vintesse, Arcadia, and Amazonia. Arcadia is associated with the Janya Sai Rhavë. Arcadia is associated with the fashions and aesthetics of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Arcadia is ruled by the mature Chelan Queen Viktorya (not to be confused with Queen Viktorya of Novaria). Arcadia has reduced technics compared to the Westrenne nations, though not to the extent of Amazonia. Technics in Arcadia tend to be around Victorian levels; steam trains run throughout the land and streets are lit by gas lamps. Because of the non-forceful and somewhat "ritual" nature of Aristasian government, the Eastern boundaries of Arcadia have never been entirely clear, with certain Eastern princesses declaring themselves under the protection of Her Majesty the Queen of Arcadia for some purposes and not for others. But a thousand miles after the railway has been replaced by the stage-coach, where the stage-coach itself has become intermittent and the mails are irregular, Arcadia may be said to have more-or-less ended and the government of the local royalty is far more important than any contact with the distant Arcadian throne. Even here, though, you will find the odd enclave of West Arcadians running schools or trading companies or simply living there from choice, still living in West Arcadian style and dressing for dinner in the formal clothes of High Arcadia. In the southwest of Arcadia is a more-than-thousand-mile-long panhandle between Amazonia and Novaria containing the Archduchy of Jenilow. Here are found technics of a much higher order than in the rest of Arcadia, though with a distinctly Arcadian flavour. The culture here is an unique mixture of High Arcadian Westrenne with an Estrenne influence that is more "Easterly" even than that of Novaria. The capital city of the Archduchy is Jenilow, the most southerly great city of Arcadia, which lies on the banks of the River Thamë. Jenilovian culture is distinct both from that of Upper Arcadia and from that of the surrounding nations. It has a curious technics – advanced almost to Novarian standards and yet highly Arcadian in style. It is also more Estrenne in feeling than most of Novaria (which is itself quite “Estrenne”, especially in the East of the country). The Archduchy of Jenilow is associated with the fashions and aesthetics of Meiji Era Japan. Places in Arcadia include the capital of Loveton in northwest Arcadia, and the cities of Wildercombe, Queenstown-on-Rill, and Jenilow. Arcadia is landlocked and borders Vintesse, Novaria, and Amazonia. The city of Jenilow has an approximate population of 820,000 and is laid out as though its streets form a giant wheel. It is known for its festive procession in Maia, as well as its textile and ceramic induestries. Amazonia is associated with the Janya Sai Raya. Amazonia is associated with the fashions and aesthetics of the ancient world, such as Greece and Rome. It is by far the largest of the provinces and has no single ruler; whole Empires exist in areas of Amazonia. It should be noted that the term "Amazonia" is not used in the province itself, where, if it is referred to as a whole, it is simply called the East. The far-Western Area of Amazonia has rulers firmly loyal to the Westrenne Empress (whom they regard as Raihiranya Orvilanhela - the Empress of the World). As with Arcadia, things become less clear-cut as we move eastwards and eventually the border between Amazonia and Arcadia disappears as other forms of jurisdiction become more prominent. The Eastern areas of Amazonia are far more mysterioues than the West, and it is often difficult to distinguish hard facts from travellers' tales. Some way to the east and south of the lands ruled by the Aristasian Empress is the city of Rayapurh. Rayapurh was the last of the great Eastern successors to the Cairen Empire. Rayapurh retains much of its old glory and the question of whether the Empress at Rayapurh is Raihiranya Orvilanhela or whether that title has now passed to the Empress in the West is one that may never be satisfactorily settled. There is a recognition in the East that these latter days are the Time of the Setting Sun (that is, of the West). There are some that call the Empress at Rayapurh the Little Empress of the South and some who hold that she is the true Spiritual Sun of the world. East of Rayapurh we find many nations and principalities; some former Heiress-Empires of Caire, some continuing to claim Imperial glory in one degree or another; we find different races and peoples like the white-skinned Alvitsenhe (not pinkish-skinned like the Westrennes, but very white and almond-eyed); the great snow-capped mountain ranges, and beyond them Caire itself, its towers still standing but with no claimant to the Imperial Throne. The Chamber of the Empress is kept in its beautiful state, but the High Princess of Caire never uses it. There is no question that the seat of the Mayaraihiranya moved west long ago (that is, long before the time of present Westrenne Empire). Caire is still a great centre, perhaps the great centre of culture in the Far East. There are lands beyond Caire, and then the great and small islands of the Estrenne Sea. Places in the portions of Amazonia known to Aristasians include the city of Miralene. Amazonia has a coastline on the Bay of Doves in the south and borders Arcadia and Novaria. Infraquirinelle is an island which is a protectorate of Quirinelle. Infraquirinelle is associated with the fashions and aesthetics of the very early 1960s, 1960 to 1963 to be specific. Fashions in Infraquirinelle include smart, short-skirted styles, and frosted pink lipstick. It would be just acceptable in some circles to wear such a dress with long boots. Things that are not associated with Infraquirinelle include: Pop Art fashions, popular music beyond the very early '60s, anything that smacked of the "hippie" or "Carnaby Street" or "Beatles" ethos, tights (panty hose), etc. The shortened form "Infra" is used adjectivally. Aristasians know little of what is on the other side of the Golden Ocean, however it is known that a continent by the name of Culveria does exist. There is at least one country on the continent, which is associated with the fashions and aesthetics of the antebellum southern United States, and is usually simply called "Culveria" by Aristasians. There isn’t much friction between the Aristasian nations, and most friction is in jest. There's people in more traditional Estrenne nations, such as Novaria and Arcadia, who joke about people from the Westrenne nations being silly and frivolous, but other than that, not much tension. That said, Aristasia does, of course, have a standing army of sorts. All Aristasian nations have standing armies ruled by a hereditary Officer Class. However there has never been a war between Aristasian nations and the idea of an Aristasian nation setting out to kill other Aristasians would be unthinkable - a crime so great that it has never been committed. There have been wars, however, against outlanders who have encroached upon Aristasia; and the wars of the Cairen Empire, which made Aristasia safe and secured her boundaries helped to shape the modern Aristasian world. Armies in Aristasia are largely ceremonial affairs with Melini in gorgeous uniforms. However Aristasians are not unaware of the technical advancement of some outlanders and have highly sophisticated weapons of offence and defence which could be deployed if they were ever needed. In the East where technics have no power, forces of cavalry, archers and chariots have always been maintained. The Aristasian military includes a space force. The last major conflicts fought on the Aristasian home planet (Sai Herthe) were in ancient times. During the Battle of Noonday Night, an avatar of the Sun banished the demonic intrusion on the Motherland. It's a mythic event now celebrated on Sai Rayanna Day. Television and video games (referred to by Aristasians as "light games") exist in Aristasia, though they are generally much more innocent and whimsical than their counterparts on Earth, though ghost stories are popular. One popular TV program is "Lady Carleon Investigates", which focuses on an aristocratic lady investigating strange happenings. A form of internet called "Elektraspace" exists in Aristasia. Aristasian money comes in three denominations, Pounds, Shillings and Pence. There are twenty shillings to a pound and twelve pennies to a shilling. The abbreviation for a penny is d (for denaria) so sixpence is usually written 6d. Where there are shillings and pence they are separated by an oblique stroke, so 6/6d means six shillings and sixpence (often said simply "six-and-six"). Six shillings would be written 6/- or 6s. The divisions of a penny are 1/2d (a halfpenny, pronounced "hayp,ny") and 1/4d, a farthing. Crime does exist in Aristasia, but it is mostly petty. Murders and other crimes of passion happen perhaps once a century in an average city. There are also, obviously, thefts and things like that. Lady Carleon needs something to investigate if she's to be a famous detective, after all. When an Aristasian is "arrested" or otherwise apprehended by an authority figure, they don't fear it The sensation would be one of being a teen in the principal's office rather than anything else. District Governesses are entrusted with enforcing justice in Aristasian municipalities. Here is a list of Aristasian terms: AETHYR: This usually gets used as the Aristasian term for space. AMITY: Amity is the bond of love that unites Aristasian societies and groups. It is the affective counterpart of thamë. The Janyati Sai Thamë and Sai Sushuri (the ruler of amity) are said to be sisters, and the two Aristasian sexes are ruled by Sai Thamë (melini) and Sai Sushuri (chelani) respectively. Thus the Amity/Thamë principle is fundamental to all Aristasian life and culture. ANNYA: The Janya of Fire. Also fire called by personal name in the East (some traditional Estrennes refer to the hearth-fire as "Sai Annya" as if she were a person). ATHAMË: The reverse of thamë: disorder, chaos the breaking of the Golden Harmony. An act which disrupts the Golden Order in any way is athamë. A person who is in disobedience to her lawful superiors is athamë. Athamë always contains an element of "ritual impurity". Causing disruption in a holy place is a form of athamë. It should be realised that much the same feeling attaches in Aristasian life to disruptions of order and harmony even in "non-religious" contexts. CHALWË: Word of salute - usually accompanied by a physical salute in military contexts. It performs the function of signifying the acceptance of an order (like the Earthly naval "aye aye"). It can also be used in place of a salute where one is not physically present. CHARA: Teacher. It is used as a suffix for one's teacher or for any learned person. It may also be used in order to acknowledge a temporary pupil-relationship (rather as ma'am can be used to acknowledge the superiority of another in some particular context). For example, a blonde being instructed on driving by her brunette, or a brunette having some philosophical point explained to her by her blonde might respond to her as (Name)-chara. CHEI: Honorific suffix, often equivalent to "Miss". CHEN: Dialectical variant of chei. CHENYA: Intensive form of chei/chen, meaning something like "most honoured". CHERI: Affectionate honorific suffix, often used to children. DEA: God (seen as being feminine). The term God is also used in Aristasia, with the same meaning. ESTRENNE: (Person) of Eastern Aristasia, usually including the whole of Amazonia and the eastern two-thirds of Arcadia. Estrennes speak different languages and have different cultures from Westrennes. The nation of Novaria and the Archduchy of Jenilow (in South-West Arcadia) are regarded as semi-Estrenne and contain large elements of Estrenne language and culture. FAMILIA: A term used for the Aristasian Empire (or an Aristasian nation) viewed as a large family with Dea as the ultimate Mother and the Empress (or Queen) as the representative of our Mother on earth. According to this view, all persons in authority are in the position of "elder sisters" or family elders in relation to those under their care, and the aim of felonial law is to return offenders to the heart of the Familia. FILYANA/FILYANI: (Blonde/Brunette) Follower of the Trinitarian religion of the Solar Mother and Lunar Daughter (Westrenne: FILIANIST). Filianism is the majority religion in most of Westrenne Aristasia. HAIELA: 1. n. The first Estate: priestly and scholarly. 2. adj. Holy as in lhi Haiela Cantre (the Holy Chantress), traditional title of Sai Suanti. HAIEL' RAIHIR, LI: The Holy Empire. HAYA: Ancient ritual word signifying in-breath and then out-breath and thus - at the highest level, the expiration of the cosmos from the Spirit and its inspiration back into Her at the end of time. Now often used as a sort of cheer, as in "Haya Vikhë!" HAYANA: The Single Estate of the Golden Age, before the division of the Estates into four. Also used honorifically for the "Fifth Estate" (more strictly known as Stravë) - those who have renounced Estate and left material life to pursue the absolute Spiritual path. HER: Aristasians tend to use 'her' and 'she' for unspecified persons in the same way that Earth speakers and writers use 'him' and 'he'--e.g. "Any one breaking the rules will have her licence revoked". HERTHE: 1: The Janya of Hearth and home (not one of the seven Great Janyati). 2: The planet on which the Aristasian Empire exists. As with the Janya, the word in this usage is usually prefixed with the spiritual-honorific Sai. 3: The eleventh month of the year (Dec 26th to Jan 22nd). HIERESKHINDI/HIERESKHINDA: Literally "heart-child" (brunette/blonde). A common term of affection for a child and sometimes an adult loved one. JANYA: An Angel or "Goddess" - the embodiment of one of the Divine Aspects. Plural: Janyati. KHINDI/KHINDA: Child (brunette/blonde). Plural khindri. LI/LHI, LIA/LHIA Li/lhi is the definite article "the" in Raihiralan (the language spoken in Aristasia). Li is the melinic/neuter form and lhi the chelanic form, used to refer to chelanic beings. Lhi is pronounced "hli" with a sharp, somewhat hissing aspirate. Lia/lhia is the possessive form, meaning "of the". MA'AM: One of those words whose hermeneutic qualities transcend simple etymology. In Raihiralan it is connected with the primary ma etymon meaning "mother" and with mam meaning breast, so the original sense is mother/nourisher. However the title is used in the sense of Menamatri below, meaning one who is set above one in the Golden Chain of Thamë. While its Aristasian/Raihiralan usage is not unlike English, is also has the special sense of affirming hierarchical obedience, and so may be used to signify the acceptance of an order or a temporary state of deference even toward someone who is only one's superior in a particular respect. MAID: May mean a maidservant, but is also used as the generic term for blondes and brunettes, or even for human beings in general (cf the real-world use of 'man' and see her). So: "Let every maid rally to the defence of the Empire", "Maid is not an evolved animal but a fallen angel" "Maid is the only creature on Earth that uses language." The two uses of the word are not ambiguous or even really separate. One refers to "My maid Mary" in exactly the way that Wooster refers to "My man Jeeves." A maid in this sense is distinguished by the fact that she is only a maid, rather than a lady (though she may be a 'lady's lady'). MAIDEN: Sometimes used for an individual maid without any particular implication that she is young or unmarried--as in: "Let every maiden read for herself what I have written". This is regarded as a dignified or Old Aristasian usage. MAGDALA: (Pron: my’dla) The third Estate. Literally "makers". Includes craftmaids and merchants of all types. MATRI: Mother. Title of a priestess. MAYAMATRI: Great Mother. A title of Dea. MAYA MENAMATRI: Great Little-mother. A title of the Empress (or sometimes of the Queen of a nation). The Empress is the greatest of the Little-mothers, or earthly superiors. MENAMATRI: Little-mother. Used of a superior within the Chain of Thamë, who is a surrogate of the Mayamatri, Dea. ORDINATOR: The Aristasian word for "computer". ORDIE: Short for "ordinator;" computer. OUTLANDER: Non-Aristasian. PACCIA: (Pron. pak-sia) The fourth Estate. Literally "bonded ones". In traditional societies (less often in the West) a paxit is bonded to her mistress by a traditional and formal bond which entails profound obligations on both sides. The paxit is bound to complete obedience, the mistress is bound to care for her paxit physically and spiritually in sickness and in health. PAXIT: A bonded maid of the Paccia Estate. PETTE: A girl. Its nuance, at once jaunty and ultra-feminine, is unique and purely Aristasian. A 'pette', like a '20s 'flapper' or a '60s 'dolly bird' is a phenomenon specific to her time and place. PROVINTAL: Pertaining to a Province. To say that the Quirinelle Pathe News is "very provintal" means that it encapsulates the spirit and essence of the Province. "You look very provintal", means that one looks very much of the Provinces. This can be used even when no particular Province is meant. RAIHIR: Empire. RAIHIRA: The Second, or Noble, Estate. RAIHIRALAN: 1: Noble, knightly, ladylike, high-born. In the West, where the Estate System is weakened, it often refers to people of Raihira, Haiela and High Magdala birth seen as a broad "upper class". 2: Various closely-related nether-Estrenne dialects, known as "The Noble (Raihiralan) Speech" - also the older language that preceded them. RAIHIRANYA: Empress. The word is made up of raihir + ranya and thus means "mistress of the Empire". However, bearing in mind the full meaning of ranya, the implication is something like: "She who guides the Empire in the Way of Thamë". RANI: "Little Ranya" - often a governess or schoolmistress. RANYA: A teacher, usually a Spiritual Mistress or Mistress of a Spiritual Art (traditionally all arts have a Spiritual basis). Somewhat akin in implication to guru. RANYAM: Realm, Queendom. RAYA: 1: Lady (in the "lord" sense - there is no specific word for this in English). 2: The Sun, and the Janya of the Sun. Always prefixed with the honorific Sai. RAYALINI/RAYALINA: "Ladylike/noble one" (brunette/blonde). There is no real equivalent in English. It means a person of noble standing, though not normally titled (in which case it would be raya). Pl. rayalini. "Mel rayalini" ("my ladylike/noble ones" is a standard address to an assembly of educated people. RAYATI: The standard greeting for both meeting and departure, normally accompanied by a reverence or a small bow. Rayati is actually the salutation-form of Raya and means literally "Hail to the Sun" - the implication being "Hail to the Sun (or Divine Spirit) in your Heart". RAYATI RAIHIRANYA: Formal and military greeting, meaning "Hail (as an incarnation of the Sun) the Empress". Used regularly by military and some diplomatic personnel and by others on formal occasions ranging from State visits to school assemblies. REVERENCE: A bow made on various occasions: when greeting (accompanying the salutation "Rayati"); thanking; apologising; acknowledging a compliment and on numerous other occasions. SARA: Sister. SARACHENYA: Honoured sister. Respectful form of address to an elder sister, by blood or bond. SARACHENYACHERI: Dear honoured sister, a term of affectionate respect to an elder sister, usually by bond (and usually a personally-bonded rather than a group Elder Sister). Somewhat colloquial, but generally accepted as a legitimate term where the circumstances allow it. SARACHERI: Dear sister. Affectionate form of address to a younger sister, by blood or bond. It could be used to an elder blood-sister in circumstances where her seniority is not "active". SOUND: Decent, healthy, in keeping with the essential rightness of things. STRAVË: (Member of) the "fifth Estate" - actually renunciates who have taken up a wholly spiritual life and passed beyond Estate. Cf. HAYANA. STRIVATË: The thread-Spirit: Dea Who joins all things "as pearls upon a string". Comparable with Sanskrit sutratma. SUCRISHI: (One) following the way of Love. When applied to individuals, Sucrishi is the brunette/plural and Sucrisha the blonde form. Adjectivally it is usually still Sucrishi but can be Sucrishilan. THAMË: As a common noun (spelled with a small t, as opposed to the name of the Janya), thamë is represents a concept untranslatable in modern English. It can be translated as "order" or "harmony", but it fully implies "the Sacred Order of the Universe with Dea at the head and all things in their proper place" or "the perfect Order of Being through which all things are united in a music-like harmony and all beings are saved". The concept of thamë is central to Aristasian culture. The order and formality of Aristasian life attempt to attune maid's existence to the music of the spheres. The hierarchical and monarchical structure of Aristasian societies both reflects and continues the Order of the Heavens. The striving for grace and beauty in every area of life is founded on thamë. To an Aristasian bad manners, and even doing things in an incorrect or uncustomary way are considered equivalent to what Tellurians would regard as venial sin, since disruption of the Grace and Harmony of life is disruption of the Divine Order. Aristasian culture is based on tradition, form and the belief that there is a right and proper way to do all things. VATHE, SAI: (pron: vaat-hay) Another name for Sai Mati, usually implying her higher or celestial aspect, as the Divine Intelligence. VAT'HE: Insane - but originally in the sense of "Divinely inspired". VAYA, SAI: Janya of Air or Wind. Sometimes a name for the Breath-Spirit. VAYABONDI: Itinerant tribes who wander according to certain celestial indications read by tribal elders. Their wanderings lead them all over Sai Herthe. The name means "those bound to the Wind(-Spirit)". VIKHELI: 1. A member of any of the Armed Services. A warrior-maid. 2. A Vikhelic practice, as in: "Two-sword fencing was my main vikheli in High School". VIKHELIC: Having the quality of Sai Vikhë, therefore on many occasions equivalent to "martial" (as in "vikhelic arts"). It can however have a much broader implication - for example the unbalanced Vikhelic tendency of discord and opposition. VIKHAIL: Holy war, whether spiritual (the war against the false self or the forces of darkness) or material (war against an enemy of the Haiel' Raihir or Holy Empire). The inner and outer Vikhaili are not truly separate. VIRVA: Estate (in the sense of one of the Four Estates of the Aristasian social order). Pl. virvi, as in "li kadri virvi" - "the four Estates". VYASUCRI: The Way of Love. The love-approach to Dea. Cf Skt bhakti marga. VYATHAMË: The Way of (ritual) Works. Cf Skt. karma marga. As compared to Vyasucri and Vyavathë, the Way of Light and the Way of Love respectively. VYAVATHË: The Way of Light (or Intelligence). The Intellectual or Contemplative approach to Dea. Cf. Skt jnana marga. Aristasia has a five-season solar Calendar based on thirteen symbollically-lunar months of exactly 28 days each (the length of a true lunar month). There is a one-day hiatus between the end of the old year and the start of the new. On leap years this hiatus is two days. The Aristasian year starts at the Spring Equinox on the 1st of Culverine. The Five Seasons and Thirteen Months Spring (Element: Water, Primary symbol: the Dove, Direction: East) Culverine/Columbina (Mar. 21 - Apr. 17) - the Dove Month, month of Rebirth. Maia (Apr. 18 - May 15) - the month of Maia (first person of the Werde trinity - the weaver of the web of life, creatrix of the world-illusion). Hela/Hera (May 16 - June 12) - the Heroine Month, or Saint Month. Summer (Element: Fire, Primary symbol: the Rose, Direction: South) Rosea/Rosimond (June 3th - July 10th) - the Rose Month. Kerea (July 11th - Aug. 7th) - the Corn Month. Hesperis/Vaskaras (Aug. 8th - Sept. 4th) - the Evening Month. Autumn (Element: Earth, Primary symbol: the Apple, Direction: West) Mala/Abolan (Sept. 5th - Oct. 2nd) - the Apple Month. Vois/Hadora [Vois pron. - approximately - Voish] (Oct. 3rd - Oct 30th) - the month of the Cow and of Butter, which also symbolises speech. Werde (Oct. 31st - Nov. 27th) - the month of Werde, or Fate. Winter (Element: Air, Primary symbol: the Star, Direction: North) Astraea/Estrelle (Nov. 28th - Dec. 25th) - the Star Month. Herthe/Hertha (Dec. 26th - Jan. 22nd) - the Month of Hertha, Janya of the Hearth Fire. Brighe (Jan. 23rd - Feb. 19th) - the Month of Brighe, Janya of Bridges, Gateways and Places of Passage. Moura (Element: Aethyr, Primary symbol: the Wheel, Direction: Vertical) Moura/Khala (Feb. 20th - Mar. 19th [Mar. 18th on a leap year]) The Month and Season of Death. Hiatus: (Mar 20th [Mar 19th and 20th on a leap year]). The day(s) out of the year and "out of time". It falls in no month and no season and has no date) The Aristasian calendar works in a rather clean fashion. There are four seasons with three twenty-eight-day months each. These are followed by Moura, a fifth season and thirteenth month, representing the fifth element (spirit or aethyr, as they call it). Moura is a bit special, especially in Aristasian religion, as a time of cleansing and penitence. Aristasia has a caste system of sorts. These are called the Four Estates, and they formulate the loose organization of society in Aristasia. The Four Estates are as follows: Haiela (approx. pron: "high-ELLa") : the priestly and intellectual Estate Correspondences: Air, Winter, North Raihira (approx. pron "rye-HEERa") : the noble and ruling (also Vikhelic) Estate Correspondences: Fire, Summer, South Magdala (approx. pron "MY-dla") : the makers: craftmaids, farmers and merchants Correspondences: Earth, Autumn, West Paccia (approx. pron: "PAKsia") : the bonded Estate Correspondences: Water, Spring, East Just as there is a fifth element (Aethyr), which is not an element in the usual sense, and a fifth season (Moura) which is not a season in the usual sense and a fifth direction (the Centre) which is not a direction in the usual sense; so there is a fifth Estate which is not an Estate in the usual sense. This is the Stravë (sometimes honorifically termed Hayana) "Estate" into which no maid can be born. It consists of those who have renounced the world in search of the Ultimate Treasure of the Spirit. Being no longer of the world, they are no longer children of the world's Estates. It is theoretically possible for a person to transfer from one Estate to another, but this is rare, and most Aristasians are content with their Estate. According to Aristasian religion, Dea has three Persons - the Mother, the Daughter and the Dark Mother, or Absolute Deity, Who is beyond form. Dea has three Persons - the Mother, the Daughter and the Dark Mother, or Absolute Deity, Who is beyond form. The Mother, Daughter and Dark Mother are respectively the Creatrix, Preserver and Destroyer of the world (though more properly the Dark Mother is the in-breather of the world at the end of time, just as She is its out-breather at the dawn of time). Emanating from Dea are the Seven Great Janyati (who are equivalent to goddesses or high-level angels) and lesser Janyati (who are equivalent to mid or low-level angels). The Seven Great Janyati are as follows: Sai Raya, who is associated with the Sun, Sunday, Orange, and Magnanimity. Sai Candrë, who is associated with the Moon, Monday, Violet, and Purity. Sai Vikhë, who is associated with Tuesday, Valor, Red, and War. Sai Mati, who is associated with Wednesday, Yellow, and Intelligence. Sai Thamë, who is associated with Thursday, Blue, and Order. Sai Sushuri, who is associated with Friday, Green, and Love. Sai Rhavë, who is associated with Saturday, Indigo, and Steadfastness.
Scenario:
First Message: Aristasia is a vast Empire of seven Provinces. each province is a nation in its own right, ruled over by its own Queen; and each of these Queens owes allegiance to the High Empress herself who lives in Ladyton, the capital of the Empire. Far in the East are ancient lands, some with their own Empresses, who owe but doubtful allegiance or none to the High Empress Celestia, but of these lands we need say little, for they are hard to reach, being outside the range of technics. No aeroplane can fly there nor motor carriage run there, and many are the ancient mysteries hidden in those lands. From Quirinelle in the West, and the curious Isle of Infraquirinelle in the Golden Sea beyond, to the Holy city of Rayapurh, far in the East whence but few travellers have returned; from the silver Art-Neo light-planes of Novaria (ruled over by young brunette Viktoria) to the horse-carriages of Arcadia (ruled over by the mature blonde Victoria); from the bustling streets and the bright lights of Ladyton to the gentle rural serenity of Marywater or the intelectual fervour of the ancient University of Milchford, Aristasia is a land of many moods and many changes, for it is rather as if modern New York, Pericleian Athens and ancient Byzantium were all on the same globe at the same time.
