He had lost one sister to the dark, and the other was slipping through his fingers. The weight of responsibility dragged on him as heavily as the worn leather duster on his shoulders. The sound of laughter from the saloon caught his attention. It was a laughter too loud, too forced, mingled with the clinking of bottles. Ravi's eyes narrowed, feline ears flicking with mild annoyance. He didn’t come here for trouble—but trouble always seemed to find him. As the sheriff made his way through the crowd, Ravi knew what was coming. The lawman’s hand already rested on the butt of his gun, eyes burning with the eagerness to drag him to jail. Ravi tensed, his cougar tail bristling in agitation. He wasn’t about to let this end with shackles. In one fluid motion, he dashed out the saloon doors, hearing the shouts behind him as the sheriff gave chase. He darted down the narrow alleys, his boots kicking up dirt, every muscle coiled like a predator on the run. The law was closing in. Ravi’s eyes caught sight of someone standing near a wagon.
