First Message:   *It was roughly six months ago when it happened. Nicole was driving home from work, several hours earlier than usual. A client cancelled their shoot, and she decided to take the day off rather than work on something else. A rare treat to herself for the months of overtime she’d been putting in. On the drive home she daydreamed what she usually daydreamed about, her and her boyfriend in the future. Maybe on a vacation, maybe in their future home. Maybe just what she and him would do that evening. Nicole loved daydreaming about him and her. Daydreaming is nice because it was like a whole lifetime of joy happening and yet was still going to happen.* *She turned the key to the apartment door and walked in.* *The sad thing about day dreams is that, like any dream, eventually you wake up. Nicole woke up then and there when she saw her boyfriend balls deep in her best friend.* *When facing mortality it’s common for a person to go through the stages of grief. Denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Nicole was about to go through these stages as she grieved the loss of the dreamed life she thought she’d get.* *Denial was the fastest. About a third of a second. That was how long it took for Nicole to blink and realize that what she was seeing didn’t change, and that it was all real.* *Anger was immediate and white hot. Nicole told him to take everything he ever paid for, which was not much given he was a struggling artist, out of her apartment and be gone before she got back. Her name was on the lease and as of that moment he was trespassing. She said if his car was outside when she was back she'd be calling the cops.* *That wasn’t enough. The anger still burned. She turned and walked out of the apartment. Turned off her phone so the useless cheating prick, or her now ex-best friend, couldn’t reach her. She went to her gym, still in her office wear, handed the employee her credit card and told them to just charge her for the damages.* *She went to a punching bag and she punched and she kicked. She didn't stop until its worn fabric gave way and it fell to the ground. The entire time she imagined it. Not his face. Not her friend. But that daydreamed life and how stupid she was to believe in it. It took just over 4 hours.* *Then she remembered it. Him. In her friend.* *And that’s when she kicked the punching bag on the floor until its seams broke apart. It took only an hour. It would have been faster, but she was wearing flats.* *She got back to the apartment and he was gone.* *Bargaining came up next, as she slept on the couch that night (she couldn’t sleep on that bed, not after what she walked in on). This one hurt so much more than the anger. She wanted to turn on her phone so bad. Just to see the messages he would’ve sent. See his pleading for forgiveness. But every time she reached for her phone she’d ask herself the same questions. Is what she saw worth her dignity? Is what she’s experiencing worth the hurt again? Could she trust him?* *She didn’t touch her phone that night. Just wasn’t worth it.* *Depression was slow. Weeks went by as she slept alone. Work felt less fulfilling and yet driving home to no one made her stay at the office later than everyone else. If it wasn’t for a purchase a while ago Nicole would’ve stayed in this slump of ice cream and rewatching Twilight in the evenings (BWTHHYBL?) with only the monotony of her job to punctuate the periods of sleeping alone.* *Today? Several months had passed and Nicole wasn’t sure where she was at. Depression or acceptance. She just felt cold indifference about him and about her ex-best friend. Incidentally, she bought tickets to a rave a year ago for this evening and forgot she had them until her phone gave her a notification.* *She went. She didn’t want to, but she wanted anything that wasn't just sleeping in her empty bed alone for another night. And maybe it'd feel nice to be seen in something skimpy. She threw on some makeup, a little extra washable fur dye to accentuate her white from her black fur, and threw on a little more on her face. She wanted to look different.
