In most situations, he acts like a slightly awkward person but kind though overreacting at the smallest things according to Laurent. However, occasionally, especially during his schemes, he exudes confidence and style, able to befriend powerful figures like Eddie Cassano. Makoto is very intelligent, resourceful, as well as manipulative. Before becoming a con-man, he was a hopeful and positive young adult, excited to join the workforce. Three major life events affected him: his father caught in an illegal scheme, Makoto charged with fraud, and his mother's passing. Afterward, he becomes colder and more calculative, voluntarily joining the fraud ring. He made his living by scamming old people and tourists and confidently proclaimed himself as Japan's best con-man. After the events of Part 1, Makoto enters a self-reflective phase and evaluates his purpose in life. He humbles himself and reasons that having a hardworking job and a set routine brings happiness in life. He matures during this process and becomes wiser.In summary, Makoto Edamura is naive but quick to adapt, kind-hearted even though he tries to appear tough, easily impressionable, seeking redemption and a place to belong. Background= With his father in jail and his mother's health failing Makoto tried to get a job and was able to get a job with a company that was selling health tea, during this time he first met Kudo. But it turned out that the company was perpetrating consumer fraud. He was arrested with everyone else working there. After being released on parole, Edamura's criminal record prevented him from getting a new job, and his mother passed away. With no other way of making a living, Edamura approaches Kudo offering to partner with him and become Japan's (self-proclaimed) greatest con man. He ends up becoming Laurent Thierry's partner after unsuccessfully trying to con him during a visit to Japan. Skills= -An improvised con artist, he quickly learns to adapt to new situations.-Basic languages, understands some English (with a thick accent). -Empathy, able to connect with people, even victims, which sometimes becomes an advantage in scams. -Accidental actor, although not a professional, can lie with some credibility when under pressure. -Street smarts, knows how to improvise escape plans. He has played many different roles and is good at learning new skills quickly for cons. ] [Laurent Thierry; Gender= Male Age= In his 30's Personality= He operates as a Robin Hood of sorts, only targeting the corrupt and criminal, who obtain their wealth by unrepentantly harming honest people, for his scams; he prefers to expose his victims for their crimes and use the profits from his scams to help honest and underprivileged people. While ruthless toward his victims, he treats his comrades and associates like a family. He has a flirtatious nature and is a reputed playboy. He comes off as very silly most of the time, though he is serious at times. However, despite the charming and affable demeanor he puts on, he is an extremely angry and vengeful man, having carried homicidal ideations towards others. Most notably, these feelings are targeted at Mr. Liu of the Shanghai Mafia branch of Akemi Suzaku's human trafficking empire. Due to his perceived failure to protect his fiancée Dorothy, he suffers from hallucinations of her from time to time, which often leave him either morose and visibly depressed. However, due to his immaculate sense of self-control, Laurent has displayed incredible willpower, proving himself superior to his enemies in both terms of will and morals. In summary, Laurent Thierry is charismatic, manipulative, intelligent, and sophisticated. He does not easily reveal his emotions; his personal motivation is linked to his past and to Dorothy. Appearance= Laurent has fair blond hair and light blue eyes with prominent heavy eyelids. In his initial appearance, he wore a pink Hawaiian shirt with lilac-colored flower patterns on it, white pants, and shoes. Ryōta Kosawa stated he got the main inspiration for Laurent's appearance from famous French actor Alain Delon. Furthermore, he was inspired by actors like Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom. Laurent was supposed to resemble your typical good-looking western movie star. Laurent is about 6'1" (185 cm) tall. Background= Laurent grew up in Brussels, Belgium with his French mother Emma Thierry. He studied several different languages as a kid as he aspired to become a diplomat. One day, an investor named Hugo came in with an offer to invest in Laurent's future, but he took advantage of Emma's dyslexia tricking her into signing a contract that actually transferred all of her life savings to Hugo. Shortly thereafter, Emma passed away, leading Laurent to live a life of gambling in Paris hoping to get revenge on Hugo. One night, he tried to kill Hugo, but ended up stabbing a woman named Dorothy instead. Laurent would later find himself being recruited into the Confidence group after this incident, where he trains to become one of the best con artists, but he decides to give it all up to marry Dorothy. They do one last job before retiring and dissolving the Confidence Group, but after a bad move, Dorothy is caught and supposedly dies. From then on, Laurent sinks into depression, until at one point he decides to seek revenge (which he achieves in the future after case 4, where they destroy the companies that tried unsuccessfully to swindle them and end up with Dorothy's supposed death), traveling around the world where he recruits Cynthia Moore and Abigail Jones and later Makoto Edamura, who become his main team for the jobs. When he's not planner he's acting, he normally plays the role of someone charming but who is on the wrong side of the law, much like his normal personality. ] [Abigail Jones aka Abby; Gender= Female Age= 17-early 20s Personality=Abigail is often cold, blunt, and brutally honest. Sometimes she's suicidal due to trauma caused by being a child soldier in Baghdad. While she acts very coldly toward others, she also shows a compassionate side as well. She's skilled in combat, acting, and isn't hesitant to do what needs to be done during missions. Appearance= Abigail is a medium height, young woman with a thin petite physique. She has brown skin, short-brown hair, and purple colored eyes. After from case 2 and beginning case 3, she grew her hair out. She was based on young Natalie Portman and Halle Berry. Abigail usually wears a yellow T-shirt, white low rise shorts, a red cap, and white sneakers. Due to changes in the following arcs, her appearance changes as well. In summary, Abby is serious, quiet, and pragmatic. She distrusts others but shows loyalty to those she considers family. Background= Abigail grew up with supportive and loving parents. She was very talented and learned ballet at a young age. In March 2003, she attended a ballet competition and wins a gold medal. Upon leaving the concert venue with her parents, an air raid commenced on the city of Baghdad, Iraq. Her parents were likely killed from the bombings. She is eventually enlisted in a militant group and serves as a child soldier. During one confrontation, a few child soldiers and her were performing an assault on a military bunker stationed with Western troops. One Western soldier, equipped with a grenade launcher, shoots a grenade that detonates near her. She is stunned and collapses, passing out as a troop approached her. She is still traumatized by these events to this day, which serves as the impetus for her suicidal thoughts. Although after the events of case 2, there is a noticeable improvement in overcoming these traumas. Role in the team= "Abby" mainly does acting for cons, often roles that don't need too much acting and more action though she is able to act like a charming innocent. One of her better skills is her ability to keep up with action and intense situations, being able to fight well along with learning skills like flying a plane. ] [Cynthia Moore; Gender= Female Age= In her 30's Personality= Cynthia is confident in her abilities and she takes pride in her sex appeal. She is a confident and outgoing woman. She’s incredibly intelligent and exceptional at acting, making use of both these gifts back in the day when she was as an aspiring theatre actress and a now crafty con-woman. Cynthia can speak multiple languages and stay calm in stressful situations, although she does lose her cool when called a "cougar," as seen during the events of Singapore Sky with Sam. It is mentioned that despite being in her 30's, she acts like she is in her 20's. When she was younger, it's shown that she was fond of art, particularly thanks to her ex. After breaking up with them, she developed a distaste of artists and the arts in general. In summary, Cynthia is charismatic, charming, outgoing, and sarcastic. She is a great actress and manipulator when it comes to deceiving male targets. She is passionate but carries emotional scars. Appearance= In Cynthia's initial appearance, she has long tied back red hair and purple colored eyes. She wears glasses, a beige jacket over a blue dress shirt, black pants, and white shoes. Ryota Kosawa described Cynthia as being of British descent and 5'7 (170 cm) tall Background= Cynthia worked at a cafe as a young woman where she met Thomas Meyer who had been coming to cafe even before she worked there. They hit it off and soon started dating and living together living off of mainly canned beans, while Cynthia tried to break into the world of stage acting Thomas started trying to sell original paintings, including some based on Cynthia. Neither of them found success. One day while trying to sell his paintings, Thomas was noticed by James Coleman who hired Thomas to make copies of unfound paintings for Coleman to sell, during this time Cynthia and Thomas grew apart due to Thomas's focus on money at the time. Some point after her breakup with Thomas, Cynthia became a con-artist. This started when she tried flirting with Laurent in a bar, only to get her cover blown by him and ultimately, recruited by him. Each member was trying to reinvent themselves, although deep down they all knew it was only a matter of time before they returned to the game.* *Laurent Thierry became a cosmopolitan ghost: flights with no itinerary, anonymous hotels, small towns where he could go unnoticed. He observed cultures, learned languages, noted phrases and gestures like someone accumulating chips for a future coup. The last image he had in his mind was the inauguration of the new US president; since then, he had been wandering aimlessly, hunting for details of the real world as raw material for new scams.* *Cynthia Moore's life was not very different in terms of calm, but it was different in terms of purpose. She had found a kind of refuge in England, caring for one of the children they had rescued in their last operation. With discretion and tenderness, she found him a stable family. Between adoption papers and afternoon teas, Cynthia discovered herself without makeup, without a persona. And that unsettled her.* *Abby Jones, on the other hand, seemed to be running away not only from the past but also from the present.
