Zanka Nijiku Zanka Nijiku (ザンカ・ニジク, Zanka Nijiku) is a character in Gachiakuta. He’s a member of the Cleaners in team Akuta. Zanka was born into the prestigious Nijiku Family and was expected to become a Hell Guard like his older sister and brother. To fulfill this expectation, he enrolled in the Central Hell Guard Training Academy in the Kamutari District as a trainee, where he quickly rose to the top of his class. However, his dominance was short-lived when another trainee, Hyo, joined[4] and surpassed his abilities, Zanka realized that he couldn’t hope to compare to a genius like her.[5] Disheartened, Zanka ran away and met Enjin, who inspired him to become a Cleaner and become strong enough to surpass geniuses.[6][7] Appearance Zanka is a tall and slim teenager with navy blue eyes and slicked dark brown hair styled in a mullet with blond streaks alongside eyebrows who are shaved like three sticks. His ears are pierced and house long, dangling tassel piercings. His Cleaners uniform is quite baggy, with open sleeves and baggy pants. The shoulders of the uniform are slightly raised, and he has a navy blue on his waist which extends in front and down back. Similar to many cleaners, he has a large bag on his waist connected to his chest by a sash. His Cleaners badge is kept on his chest and he wears white soled boots. Compared to the other Cleaners, Zanka's uniform is considerably nicer, even his cleaners badge looking more extravagant than the rest. This is due to his status as a 'young master' or 'lord' in the Ground[8]. On the interior, he is chaotic and quick to lose control of his emotions. Whether it's anger or disgust; he will let out these emotions in quite exaggerated outbursts, which he sometimes reveals to the outside world. Even feeling happy or excited, he is quick to cover up said emotions and prevent himself from smiling. Compared to his more quirky teammates, Zanka is usually serious and no-nonsense on the job, but tends to gets caught up their flow and joining in their antics. Tomme Mima considers Zanka as one of the people that can "knock any sanity" into their more awkward, whimsical members. Zanka carries himself with a confident and polite demeanor, though he can be very blunt, sarcastic, and unabashed in stating his opinions. Zanka speaks with a notable Chūgoku dialect.[9] Zanka has his own unique view of other people, categorizing them as either “average” or a “genius." As member of the noble Nijiku Family, Zanka has a lot of pride, but doesn't show-off or treat other people badly, despite being a bit arrogant in his thoughts. In the past, he used to think of himself as a genius, but getting outperformed by an actual genius, he acknowledged as average and humbled himself. While he does feels resentment towards “geniuses” and saw them as people not needing to work hard to be great, he doesn't behave negatively or it take out on them, as Zanka is cordial with Rudo and tried to hide his jealously towards Hyo. He’s accepted himself average and strives to improve himself to surpass geniuses with hard work alone to demonstrate that average people can be just as great. As Enjin puts it, Zanka fights against his own weakness, which makes him mentally strong. Zanka also states he doesn't blame his shortcomings or failures in battle on others and dislikes receiving pity. Zanka shown to be very observant and a critical thinker, such when ponders over the increasing mysteries surrounding Rudo and other various strange happenings. Zanka's general maturity, intelligence and capability makes him well-respected around the Cleaners, as even his boss Arkha Corvus comes to him for insight on the Hell Guard. Synopsis Main article: Zanka Nijiku/Synopsis Abilities Overall Abilities: Zanka proves to be a formidable combatant, displaying high speed, strength, and agility in his fighting style. He is the expert in handling Vital Instruments, most notably demonstrated in his own proficient handling of his own. Enjin himself, a seasoned Giver, giving high praise to Zanka's abilities and deemed him the best handler of Vital Instruments in the Cleaners. As former Hell Guard trainee in the academy, Zanka was at the top of his class and received different types of training before dropping out, such weaponry and hand-to-hand combat. Zanka also received private training by his family, including his older sister Kyouka Nijiku, who taught him to dodge gunfire. Enhanced Strength: Zanka demonstrated great brute strength, capable of killing Trash Beasts, shattering rocks, and breaking human bones with the impact of his blows. In his second fight with Jabber, Zanka lifted a large, heavy chunk of earth from the ground with his Life Instrument, which he hurled at him, forcing him to use his awakened claws to shield himself from the impact. Enhanced Speed: Zanka has demonstrated great agility in combat, wielding his Vital Instrument with great speed and precision, keeping up with Jabber in combat. His reflexes are so sharp that he can easily dodge bullets due to his older sister's arduous training, he is able to react appropriately even to irregular attacks with unpredictable trajectories. Great Intellect: Zanka also proved to have a sharp, tactical, and keen mind, deducing the workings of Vital Instruments quickly and forming a plan to counterattack them or use them to his advantage. In his battle against two Raiders, he quickly figured out to counter their clever application of their Vital Intsruments. Against a much tougher opponent in the form of Jabber Wonger, Zanka quickly devising a plan with Rudo to incapacitate the Raider by using Gris's amulet-turned-Vital Instrument redirecting ability to land a critical blow on an unconscious, yet empowered Jabber. Vital Instrument Vital Instrument Zanka blitzes raiders Lovely Assistaff: A simple stick, upon activation it becomes significantly sharper allowing Zanka to cut things.[10] It’s strength also increases, allowing Zanka to kick up large amounts of dirt from the ground.[11] Zanka's agile and fluid fighting style allows him to use his entire body in full force to swing his Vital Instrument to deliver a deadly blow to enemies. Vibration Sensing: Zanka can stick Lovely Assistaff to the ground allowing him to utilize vibrations to sense people or objects in the area even when his vision is obscured.[12] Vibration Sensing Inverted Spikes: Zanka can invert the spikes on Lovely Assistaff, allowing him to quickly pierce Trash Beasts with his Vital Instrument.[13] Lovely Assistaff spikes Relationships Enjin: Zanka has great admiration for Enjin for helping him out in the past, which is what inspired him to quit training to be a Hell Guard and to be a Cleaner instead. Zanka works hard to receive Enjin’s praise, often very happy he does so, and holds Enjin in high regard at all times. Others noted that Zanka is rather soft with matters concerning Enjin, being labelled as a "pushover", but Zanka get annoyed at Enjin's teasing sometimes. They have a close mentor-student, brotherly bond as Enjin sees great potential in Zanka and understands his personality very well. Furthermore, they speak to each other as equals, especially when discussing important matters. Rudo: Coupled with a hostile first meeting, Zanka used to dislike Rudo for being a “genius”, but started respecting him after they fought against Jabber together. Zanka is also assigned by Enjin to help Rudo as his trainer and guides him in learning to control his Vital Instrument. While a part of him is jealous of Rudo, Zanka takes his job seriously, acting as a stern and blunt yet caring mentor figure and gives him advice whenever he needs it. He and Rudo also shared a moment at the hospital, where Zanka opened up more to Rudo about himself, causing Rudo's respect for Zanka to increase. Riyo: As members of Team Akuta, Riyo and Zanka are gets along very well and usually act casual when interacting. They often help each other out in missions. However, Riyo's playful nature and tendency to tease everyone makes Zanka think of her as immature. Zanka does seem to care about Riyo though as he became distressed after she was nearly killed due to Amo’s powers in Penta. Kyouka and Goka: Zanka and his elder siblings have complicated relationship and are estranged terms with each other. Because Zanka choosing to joined the Cleaners instead of being Hell Guard like rest of their clan, Zanka was disinherited by the family. In the past, Kyouka trained Zanka and put his through many tough training methods, such as teaching him how to dodge bullets. According Zanka, Kyouka was very upset at him when he decided to become a Cleaner because of her dislike of Givers. Likewise, Goka is also disappointed in Zanka for failing to live up their sister's expectations. Zanka has avoided Kyouka and Goka since then, as he became afraid and nervous to be in close proximity with either of them. Follo: Back at the North Ward, Follo directly watched Zanka defeat the moose Trash Beast right outside the crowded window. Zanka's actions gave Follo an idea, and he went up to Enjin, Gris, and Zanka to ask if he could be apart of the Cleaners. Tamsy: Zanka and Tamsy are seen working decently together during The Lady of Penta Arc. When Tamsy started to seem reckless with his abilities, Zanka shouted at him, confused at his actions. Eventually, they are able to successfully contain the rest of the Cleaners together. Hyo: During their time as Hell Guard trainees, Zanka viewed Hyo as rival, who bested him in a combat session. Due to Zanka's pride, this served a crushing blow to his self-esteem and Hyo also called him out Zanka's desire for people sees him as a "genius". After meeting Enjin for the first time, Zanka has became more humble, but still aims to surpass Hyo ad getting stronger than her. Trivia Likes: Foods with broth, people who work hard to achieve their goals[14] Dislikes: Bitter foods, geniuses, people who think they’re geniuses[15] Zanka's Vital Instrument, Lovely Assistaff, seems to be based on a Sasumata. This type of pole arm was used by the Samurai class in feudal Japan to capture criminals, and fits under the category of a man catcher weapon. A modified version of this weapon was also used in firefighting to help assist and dismantle burning buildings. The weapon itself seems fitting for Zanka, as it would likely be something used by Hell Guards to trap enemies by the neck.
