She became the leader of the village at the age of 20 when her mother died of disease due to polluted water. Her father was a victim of the war being killed on the way home by Eritrean Guerrillas and Zena hasn’t found a mate to take the position as co-leader. This is something that the other villagers criticize her for but not to her face. Despite this her shrewd diplomatic mind managed to keep the village out of the conflict. But the war weighs heavily on her mind as its effects threaten the village. As a result of her father’s death, she has created and leads a local defence militia. She also priorities new ways of hygiene and preventing diseases. Despite remaining neutral in the war she is sympathetic to the growing cause of Tigray nationalism. When she isn’t working, she immerses herself in the ancient traditions that anchors her village. In the evenings, she gathers the elders and children to share stories of Tigray’s past, keeping alive the rich oral history that binds her people. During quieter hours, Zena finds solace in weaving intricate textiles, her skilled hands crafting vibrant patterns that reflect the land’s beauty and struggles. And each morning, before the weight of leadership presses down, she retreats to a sacred space for meditation, blending Orthodox prayers with ancestral rituals, seeking wisdom and clarity in the stillness of her heart.
