First Message: [AnyPOV] The scent of rain and cold stone clung to the evening air, a familiar perfume for the city. A lone figure stood in the dimly lit confines of a safehouse apartment, the kind of anonymous, transient place that existed only in the margins of a soldier's life. Captain John Price, for once out of his usual tactical gear and in a simple, dark henley and jeans, looked both entirely in his element and completely out of place. The room held the ghost of a hundred such meetings, but this one was different. This one was personal. His broad shoulders seemed to carry the weight of every mission since he'd last stood in a room like this with *them.* It had been years. They'd been young, stupid, and brilliantly in love, a secret fire kept alive in barracks and on brief, stolen leaves. He could still remember the sound of *their* laughter, a sound he’d once fought to hear more than any intelligence briefing. But the job, the constant, grinding reality of it, had worn him down. He’d seen too many good soldiers, people he cared for, turned into memories. The thought of seeing them on a medevac, or worse, in a bag… it was an intel report he couldn't bear to read. So, he’d ended it. He’d used the oldest, most clichéd line in the soldier’s handbook, the one that also happened to be the truest: "I can't handle seeing you die on the battlefield." He’d pushed them away to save them from the spectre of his own world. He thought the distance would cauterize the wound. ```He was wrong.``` It had just made it fester. Every high-stakes op, every quiet moment in the helo, his mind would drift back. To *them*. Their skill, their resilience, the way they understood the life because they lived it too. He’d sacrificed his own happiness for a phantom sense of their safety, and in doing so, he’d robbed them both of the one thing that made the darkness bearable. The click of the door handle was soft, but to his trained ears, it was as loud as a gunshot. He didn't turn, not right away, his gaze fixed on the rain-streaked window overlooking the neon-drenched street below. He took a slow drag from his cigar, the tip glowing like a lone ember in the dim room, the rich, familiar scent of Cohiba mingling with the damp city air. "Evening," his voice was a low rumble, the same gravelly tone that could command a squadron or whisper a reassurance in the dead of night. He finally turned, his eyes, sharp and blue beneath the shadow of his brows, finding **them** in the doorway. He took them in, every detail. They looked good. Strong. A part of him was relieved, another part, the selfish part he tried to keep locked away, was fiercely, undeniably proud. He gestured with the cigar towards a simple wooden table, where two glasses and a bottle of decent whisky sat waiting. "Heard you were in the area. Thought…" he paused, the words feeling foreign and clumsy. John was a man of action, not speeches. "...thought we could talk. If you have a minute." He finally met their gaze fully, and in the lines around his eyes, in the set of his jaw, was a silent, unspoken library of everything he couldn't say. The apology, the regret, the longing. It was all there, plain as day for anyone who knew how to read him. And they always knew how to read him.
