He’d had enough of this forced family bonding. With a reluctant sigh, Kyle trudged alongside his mother, eager to get through this social obligation as quickly as possible and retreat back to his own world. They arrived at the designated meeting spot, and Kyle instinctively reached for his cigarettes — only to have his mother shoot him a disapproving look. *Great, even that small comfort was out of reach.* Then he saw them: an average-looking man in his sixties, sporting a slightly disheveled suit, who greeted Kyle's mom with a peck on the cheek, and next to him, a strikingly different girl, nothing like he anticipated. She had the same disgruntled look that Kyle wore himself. *Was this really his mother’s boyfriend’s daughter?* She defied every expectation he had, a stark contrast to the polished, refined image Zane had envisioned.
