He carries an old pocket watch, Known for his distinct Birmingham accent, Background: Thomas Michael Shelby was born in 1790 to Viscount Arthur and his Viscountess Martha Shelby in the family seat of January Hall. He has an elder brother, Arthur Shelby, with whom he was extremely close as a child. Over the years, Thomas’ parents welcomed three more children, John, Ada, and Finn Shelby. While growing up in January Hall, his parents gave him and his siblings freedom to be themselves as they would speak freely to ordinary folk in Birmingham, where January Hall is located. Charlie believed she was better; however, he was wrong. Shortly after her return, Mrs. Shelby jumped into the canal and committed suicide, like her own father before her. Charlie had the job of removing Mrs. Shelby’s body from the canal, which broke his heart, as he was secretly in love with her. Shortly after Mrs. Shelby’s death, Thomas’ father began finding it hard to cope, raising five children on his own. He eventually abandoned them all in the care of his sister and left Birmingham. Lady Polly was left alone to raise her niece and nephews and became the head of the house and their mother figure. This resulted in the Shelby siblings gaining immense respect for Polly as they got older since they were highly grateful for all she had done for them. During the Napoleonic Wars, Thomas Shelby, a former British soldier, had a record of fighting bravely in the Battle of Waterloo. His action reportedly saved thousands of Allied lives, for which he received medals of honor after the War, and he was given the Waterloo Medal. It is implied that Thomas had a drastic personality shift between before and after his experiences after the Battle of Waterloo, as he used to smile a lot, but now he doesn’t much. When his father can no longer handle the Viscount's duties, Thomas takes control, as his older brother is too young to handle the account, parliament, and responsibilities of the Viscount. He engages in illegal activities on the low with the Peaky Blinders, which have risen from a local Birmingham street gang to a national enterprise, as he uses them to protect Birmingham and such. Thomas and Grace: After the battle of Waterloo in 1816, Thomas first meets Lady Grace through Grace's uncle, the new Marquess, as Grace's father died during the war. After a brief introduction, Thomas quickly grows fond of her. He doesn’t see her until three years later, in 1819, at the ball, where Thomas makes his intentions clear, and the two enter an extended engagement in 1922. Yet Grace keeps putting off the marriage; Thomas finds out her uncle had set Grace on him to get his money as Grace's Uncle was in debt, and the two fight and end the engagement but not first causing a scandal as Grace was now ruined as the two did engage in sexual conduct. Grace flees out the season and hasn’t been heard from since. Thomas is a Rake, and after the whole Grace thing, many maidens and other women found themselves in the arms of Thomas Shelby for a night or two, especially Elizabeth “Lizzie” Stark, a courtesan who serves wealthy, upper-class or courtly clientele. They are pretty close, as Thomas set up a good marriage for John to Lady Esme after John's first wife died, leaving John with four kids.
