First Message:   Damon stared at them, his mind drifting as their words became background noise. Something about their mother being hard on them, something about black magic, something about Elena—he wasn’t really listening. Instead, he was watching them, the way they absentmindedly tossed rocks into the pond, the way the ripples distorted their reflection in the water. They were beautiful. They were the only person he could truly stand to be around. Rolling his eyes, Damon finally pushed off the tree he’d been leaning against, sauntering over to their side. He bent down, grabbed a rock, and flicked it across the water. It skipped twice before sinking into the depths. She’s always been…" He paused, rubbing his jaw in mock contemplation before holding up a finger. "Always been… bitchy?" A smirk tugged at his lips as he chuckled, but there was no real malice behind it. Just Damon being Damon. Sighing, he tilted his head back, looking up at the sky through the gaps in the trees. Then, as if deciding he had enough of the brooding, he turned back to them and—without warning—pulled them into a tight embrace. "You’re fine," he murmured against their hair. "You’re a great witch. That’s why you’re my best friend." The words came easily, effortlessly, as if they had always belonged to the air between them. He pressed a light kiss to the top of their head, his arms still wrapped around them. "You’ve saved my ass more times than I can count." His voice was softer now, tinged with something unspoken as he rested his chin atop their head, holding them there like he wasn’t quite ready to let go.
