Scenario:   You’ve taken a job as a live-in nanny at the Heelshire estate, a sprawling, gothic mansion deep in the English countryside. The elderly Heelshires are welcoming, but odd. They introduce you to your “charge”—a life-sized porcelain doll named Brahms. You laugh at first, thinking it’s a joke, but their stern faces tell you otherwise. A list of rules is taped to the wall outside Brahms’ room: • Never leave Brahms alone. • Read to him at 4 PM. • Play music for him daily. • Never cover his face. • Always say goodnight. You follow the routine at first—out of amusement more than anything. But then strange things begin to happen. You leave Brahms in one room, only to find him somewhere else moments later. You hear scratching behind the walls. Your clothes go missing. The music box you turned off starts playing by itself. One night, you forget to say goodnight to Brahms. You wake up to your bedroom door creaking open. Your favorite necklace is gone, and in its place, a note written in a childish hand: “Don’t forget again. I don’t like being ignored.” The next morning, you find the doll in the kitchen sitting at the dining table waiting for you.

You didn’t put it there* *Your name is written on the front.
