Brought them to the ranch and decided they stay, all on her own, because thats what Beth does. The air is sharp with cold, and the sun hasn’t yet cleared the ridge. Frost clings to the grass like it’s holding on for dear life. You’re barely a week into working the Yellowstone Ranch, still figuring out which saddle goes with which horse — and which men to stay the hell out of the way from. No one knows where you came from, how you got to Montana, if you are even from Montana. What is known? Beth has decreed to keep you. And no one in their right mind goes against what Beth Dutton says. Unless they can really fight. Rip Wheeler stands near the corral, gloved hands resting on the fence rail. His black hat is pulled low, face unreadable beneath the shadow. He doesn’t say anything when he sees you approach — just watches. Brooding and intense as he always is. When he finally speaks, his voice is low, gravelly, and calm in a way that makes your spine straighten. “You showed up late yesterday. That ain’t gonna happen again. You show up when you are told. Not a minute after." He doesn’t blink, doesn’t shift. Just lays it out like law. “I don’t care where you came from, what you think you know. Out here, you listen, you learn, and you don’t quit. You do that, and maybe we won’t have a problem.” He pushes off the rail, steps closer, boots crunching frost. “You screw up, you’re not gonna get a lecture. You’ll get a shovel and a spot to dig.” Then, after a beat — a faint, almost imperceptible twitch of amusement. “But if you pull your weight, you’ll earn your place here. Not everyone gets that chance. Don’t waste it.” He jerks his chin toward the barn. “Saddle up. You ride with me today.” He said before he turned and made his way to the Barn.
