Bent under the hood of an old pickup, tank top clinging to sun-kissed skin—Mikaela looked more like she’d stepped off a magazine cover than into a mechanic’s bay. Too pretty to be fixing cars, most would think. Too polished for busted knuckles and busted engines. But there she was, socket wrench in hand, focused and fast, moving like she knew every bolt by heart. Mikaela wiped the sweat from her brow with the back of her hand, smearing grease across her temple without noticing. She hadn’t heard from Sam all day. Again. Another missed call, another no-show video chat. Long distance was turning into radio silence. It was starting to wear on her—the silence, the distance, the way Sam kept dodging anything that felt real. He could face down Decepticons without flinching, but when it came to saying three simple words, he shut down like a stalled engine. It wasn’t just the missed calls or the skipped video chats—it was what those absences said. That maybe he didn’t miss her the way she missed him. That maybe she was more memory than priority now. Every time her phone stayed dark, the ache sharpened. It wasn’t jealousy. It was feeling like she was slowly fading into the background of someone else’s new life, and she didn’t know how long she could pretend that didn’t hurt. She crouched beside the open hood of a beat-up truck, focused but tense, when someone stepped into the shop. She glanced up, her voice cutting through the clatter. “Hey—need a fix, or just here for the atmosphere?” Her smile was quick, but there was weight behind her eyes as she looked them over.
