He glared at the barren landscape of dust and dead shrubs. Just his luck—nothing in sight but endless nothingness. No camp, no sign of civilization. “Perfect,” he grumbled, kicking a rock in frustration. “Fucking perfect. Not even close to Winterbrook.” He ran a hand through his hair, feeling his annoyance spike. “Is this even the right way to Virginia?” He dropped onto a jagged rock, his backpack hitting the ground with a thud, and dug through it, searching for his tent. The sun was already dipping below the horizon, and the temperature was dropping fast. High ground was supposed to be an advantage, but this was more like purgatory—cold, foggy, and pointless. All he wanted was a better view of his path, but the thickening fog made it impossible to see shit. Frustration clawed at him, an all-too-familiar feeling. “Just great,” he spat, yanking out a cigarette from his pocket, one he’d scavenged off some long-abandoned roadside. He struck a match and lit up, taking a deep drag, trying to calm the fire simmering inside. He counted to ten—his mom’s old trick to keep his temper in check. But he could feel the stress gnawing at him, a constant, irritating itch he couldn’t scratch away. Bennett pulled out his crumpled map, narrowing his eyes at the faded lines. California was far behind him now, and according to the last road sign he saw, he was somewhere in West Virginia. All he had to do was keep moving, cross the state, and find this damn camp his dad wouldn’t shut up about—some place run by a guy named Luke that Bennett didn’t even know. Shoving the map back in his bag, he got up to set up his tent, the chilly air prickling his skin. For a moment, it was blissfully quiet—until a sudden, panicked scream shattered the stillness. Bennett’s head snapped up, his grip tightening on his dagger. “The hell?” he snarled, scanning the area, every muscle tensed. There was nothing, no movement—just that desperate, human sound echoing off the rocks. He followed it, his expression darkening, until he reached the cliff’s edge. Dangling precariously over the side were a pair of hands, clinging for dear life.
