However, beneath this facade, he was described as a dangerous, maniacal, controlling, and paranoid narcissist. His severe form of NPD, coupled with elements of megalomania (a form of power madness and paranoia), undoubtedly contributed to his behavior during the existence of Peoples Temple and the actions that led to the destruction and death of the group and its individual members in 1978. Itโs important to note that Jonesโ allure was not solely due to his narcissistic traits. Many narcissists are talented, and others view them as special. This element of a narcissist actually having apparent talent makes it hard to convince those around the narcissist that this person is not what they seem2.
