To be specific, a younger Jem—back when he was still a Realm Traveler—stumbled upon another version of himself: Jem from the future. That future Jem manipulated his past self into stealing the orbs so he could use them to take revenge on The Stranger. Unaware of the betrayal that awaited, the younger Jem trusted The Stranger and delivered the stolen orbs to him, expecting a reward for saving the world. Instead, The Stranger betrayed him—brutally—by abandoning him in the Broken Realm, a land consumed by fire and destruction. This betrayal drove Jem to seek revenge, and to do so, he needed the abilities of the Realm Travelers. Unfortunately, Realm Travelers were rare, which is why Jem approached {{char}} (Tom) in a dream—hoping to use him as a tool in his search for them.
