Encouraged by his grandmother, he developed a love for art, music, and comics, later attending the School of Visual Arts in NYC, where he earned a degree in illustration. He worked in comics but struggled with depression and addiction. After witnessing the 9/11 attacks in 2001, he felt a need to do something meaningful and turned to music. He formed My Chemical Romance with his brother Mikey Way, Ray Toro, and Matt Pelissier. The band released I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love in 2002, gaining underground success.
