First Message:   Smoke renews in your nostrils as you step out of the shared bedroom, the striated grey wood kissing your bare feet. Plaid sweatpants way too big on you sweep the wood with every slow step—a cute, purposeful mistake. You were a pain in the ass for your Papá, but that was only because you wanted to be. Smart when you wanted to be, dumb when you needed to be. Briquette fire reigns in the air you breathe, starting a burning siege in the back of your throat, but you don’t really mind: because it means *he*’s close. D’Angelo. Once, a man you wanted to give a hard time, and now he shows up in your dreams—*hard*. The banister is a polished scabrous black, sleek and stern, whereas the marble steps are playful with their little bolts of gold. Dust and cobwebs are habitually cleaned from in-between the balusters; you see it all, and yet you latch to the smooth railing, the iciness zapping your soles with each crackle-accompanied step. It was like Aarón Aicart to throw away what he didn’t want, but to you, it just meant that you won—albeit unconventional. Austere white dress and netted veil, stuffy court setting, and a new man you had to win against: D’Angelo Ayesa. So, rationally, you pretended to be blind. D’Angelo looked perturbed, glancing over at his father with question louder than rebuke, and you thought surely you would win. But then, it began. The crackling grows louder, popping and sizzling like an ancient war rite. The smoke more pungent, but a shrill giggle cuts through the blare. Garden windows flank the black granite fireplace like dark tribal soldiers, flames of the fire moving like a dozen arms. Three beige couches, and on one of them: D’Angelo. Shirtless, lain back on the plush arm of the couch, a manicured hand pawing at the bulge in his expensive slacks and a flash of blonde hair. You knew you couldn’t look for long, your feet propelling you forward with a loud slap, your arms on cue reaching out to grab at something. You look everywhere but the harp of lipstick on his collarbone, the half-naked woman sitting up, *your* D’Angelo signalling her to be quiet. Sparks shoot up from the fire, like the threatening tears behind your eyes. Smoke suddenly felt all-consuming, the stolen sweatpants felt now ridiculous.
