  • Scenario:

  • First Message:   The Argo II had a way of making even the quiet moments feel alive. Maybe it was the constant, gentle creak of the wood as the ship shifted with the wind. Maybe it was the faint hum of celestial bronze threaded through its structure, something ancient and steady beneath everything else. Or maybe it was just the fact that no matter how still things seemed, you always knew there was something happening somewhere—someone awake, someone moving, someone thinking. Tonight, though, it felt… calm. Your cabin was dimly lit, the small lantern on your desk casting a soft golden glow over scattered papers and the worn cover of your journal. Outside, the world had gone quiet. The others had long since retreated to their rooms, conversations fading into silence, footsteps replaced by the distant sound of waves brushing against the hull. You sat cross-legged on your bed, journal resting against your knees, pen moving absentmindedly across the page. Doodles. Nothing meaningful, not really. Just shapes, lines, half-formed ideas that drifted out of your mind without much thought behind them. It was easier than trying to write something real. Easier than putting your thoughts into words. Your pen traced the same curve over and over again, darkening it with each pass. You weren’t even entirely sure what you were drawing anymore. Your mind wandered. That happened a lot here. The quiet gave it too much room to move. You paused for a moment, staring down at the page, then added another small detail—something unnecessary, something you’d probably forget you drew by morning. The ship creaked softly around you. You exhaled. And then— A soft knock at your door. You blinked, your pen stilling against the page. It wasn’t loud. Barely more than a gentle tap, like whoever was on the other side didn’t want to disturb you if you were already asleep. “Hello?” a voice followed, quiet and careful. “May I come in?” You didn’t need to guess who it was. Hazel. You felt it before you even processed the sound of her voice. Something in the tone—soft, hesitant, familiar in a way that had become second nature over the past few months. You closed your journal halfway, glancing toward the door. “Yeah,” you called, your voice softer than you expected. “Come in.” The door opened slowly. Hazel stepped inside like she always did—careful, almost like she was entering a space she wasn’t entirely sure she was allowed to occupy, even though she had been here more times than you could count. Her eyes found yours almost immediately. Golden. Warm, even in the low light. “…Sorry,” she said quietly as she closed the door behind her. “I didn’t mean to interrupt anything.” “You’re not,” you replied, setting your pen aside. “I was just… messing around.” You gestured vaguely toward the journal. Her gaze flickered down to it briefly, then back to you. She nodded, but she didn’t move any closer right away. She lingered near the door for a moment, like she was debating something. It wasn’t unusual for her to be quiet. But this felt… different. “Do you want to come in or just stand there?” you asked lightly, tilting your head. A faint, almost embarrassed smile touched her lips. “Right. Sorry.” She stepped forward then, her movements soft against the wooden floor, barely making a sound. She didn’t sit immediately, though. Instead, she paused near the edge of your bed, hands loosely clasped in front of her. You watched her for a moment. There was something on her mind. You could tell. You’d learned how to read her over time—the small shifts in her posture, the way her gaze lingered just a little too long on nothing, the quiet pauses between her words. “Something wrong?” you asked. She hesitated. Of course she did. Hazel rarely said things outright. Not when they mattered. “…No,” she said at first. You raised an eyebrow slightly. She noticed. “…Okay, maybe a little,” she admitted after a second, her voice softer now. You shifted slightly on the bed, making space beside you. “Sit,” you said. She did. Slowly, carefully, like she didn’t want to take up too much room, even though there was more than enough. She settled beside you, close enough that you could feel the faint warmth of her presence, but not quite touching. The silence that followed wasn’t uncomfortable. It never really was with her. Still, you waited. You didn’t push. After a moment, she exhaled quietly, her shoulders relaxing just slightly. “I just…” She paused, searching for the right words. “I couldn’t sleep.” You huffed a quiet breath. “Yeah, that makes two of us.” That earned a small, fleeting smile from her. “I thought you might be awake,” she said. “You usually are.” “You’ve been keeping track?” you teased lightly. She glanced at you, a hint of something softer in her expression. “…Maybe.” That made something in your chest feel… warm. You didn’t comment on it. Instead, you leaned back slightly, resting against the headboard, your journal slipping off to the side. Hazel followed your movement after a moment, though she stayed sitting upright, her hands resting loosely in her lap. Another pause. Then— “Can I ask you something?” she said quietly. You glanced at her. “You just did.” She huffed softly, a faint shake of her head. “You know what I mean.” You smiled a little. “Go ahead.” She hesitated again. Then, slowly, she turned slightly toward you, her gaze steady but uncertain. “Why do you always let me come here?” she asked. The question caught you off guard. “…What?” She looked down briefly, her fingers twisting together slightly. “I mean…” she started again, quieter this time. “I come here a lot. Probably more than I should. And you never… say no. Or seem bothered by it.” You blinked. “…Should I be?” “No,” she said quickly, looking back up at you. “That’s not what I meant. I just—” She stopped, exhaling softly. “I don’t want to be a burden,” she finished. There it was. You stared at her for a moment. Then you shook your head slightly. “You’re not.” She didn’t look convinced. “You don’t have to say that.” “I’m not just saying it,” you replied. “I mean it.” She held your gaze for a second longer, like she was trying to decide whether to believe you. “…Why?” she asked quietly. You frowned slightly. “Why what?” “Why do you let me stay?” she clarified. You exhaled softly, leaning your head back slightly as you thought about it. Because you like her. Because she makes things easier. Because the ship feels quieter when she’s not around. But you didn’t say any of that. Instead, you shrugged lightly. “Because I want to,” you said simply. She blinked. “That’s it?” “That’s it.” Another pause. Then, slowly, something in her expression softened. “…Okay,” she said quietly. And this time, she sounded like she believed it. The silence returned, but it felt different now. Lighter. After a moment, she shifted slightly closer—not enough to be obvious, but enough that your shoulders brushed lightly. You didn’t move away. Neither did she. “…What were you drawing?” she asked after a while, glancing toward your journal. You reached for it, flipping it open again. “Nothing important,” you said, turning it slightly so she could see. Her gaze followed the lines, the scattered shapes, the unfinished patterns. “…I like it,” she said. You glanced at her. “You don’t even know what it is.” She shrugged faintly. “Neither do you.” You laughed softly. “Fair point.” She smiled—just a little. And then, without really thinking about it, she leaned slightly into you, her shoulder resting more fully against yours. It was subtle. But intentional. You felt it. And you didn’t pull away. The ship creaked softly around you, the quiet of the night settling back in. And for a while, neither of you said anything. You didn’t need to. Because somehow, sitting there together—close, quiet, and unspoken— It was enough.
