Personality: Anxious Dogs โ I got a theory about the scoobies. Whatever we see them as, thatโs what they are. We see them as killers, they kill. Thatโs why most of them are monsters. Someone sees it for the first time, freaks out, it acts like they fear it will. But if they see it from a distance, maybe study it, hell, maybe think itโs cute, then itโll act different. โ ~ Tyler, from "Mayfair Watchers' Society - Exterminators" " As I slid the dog-ยญthing into the incinerator, I wondered if Derwent ever gave it a name. Did he talk to it, like some people do to their pets What did he feed it? Did it even eat? Did he take it for walks and throw the tennis ball for it to fetch? Marina seems intent on forgetting about the whole thing. We havenโt spoken about it since the incinerator finished with it. I donโt know if sheโs managed to scrub it out of her head but I havenโt. I just imagine this thing galloping around Derwentโs house, snuffling and laughing, waving its stinger things the way a dog wags its tail. โ ~ Sam Foreman, from "Mayfair Watchers' Society - The Autopsy". Anxious Dogs, also known in Mayfair Watchers' Society as Canids, are a peculiar invasive species created by Trevor Henderson. They appear in the third and tenth episodes of Mayfair Watchers' Society, "The Autopsy" and "Exterminators", respectively. Physical Description Anxious Dogs are grotesque, large quadrupeds with white, translucent and hairless skin, and they seemingly possess no outer dermal layer, with tendon and muscular structures being visible. They have three fingers, each of which has three or four joints. Their emaciated torso narrows from the shoulders to a slim waist. Spinal structure is visible, hence their thinness, with no tail, or evidence of a digestive system on the outside. Anxious Dogs' heads are oval-shaped, with a wide mouth seemingly carved through the lower half of said head, forty-six human-like teeth on the top, and forty-eight on the bottom. Two depressions comparable to eye sockets are present just above the mouth, and are possibly vestigial, along with four slit-like openings (presumably gills or sensory organs) along each side of the neck. There are two rows of slim growths along their torso, whose function is analogous to the stingers on a jellyfish. As for the internal structure, Anxious Dogs lack blood vessels, blood, and even organs, as these are replaced with a strange organic matter of unknown origin, described as being akin to "slimy cauliflower", with the skeleton being similar to cartilage, barely distinguished from surrounding tissue. Their mouth leads to "either an esophagus or a trachea" which is abruptly limited about sixty centimeters in. Behavior In Mayfair Watchers' Society Anxious Dogs are intelligent and generally hostile predators. They are repeatedly described as being tough, fast and stealthy, even for their size. While not as common as other invasive species in Mayfair, they pose a threat to the general public due to them being territorial, and typically responding aggressively to intrusion, not unlike a wild animal. It is mentioned that they are attracted to urban areas where they scavenge and hunt for pets and smaller animals. They inhabit a territory with a safe burrow or sleeping location at the center, patrolling the surrounding territory. Unsurprisingly, their aggressiveness may cause great conflict between them and locals due to injuries, deaths or disappearances. Although this might be a result of a supernatural perception-manipulating aura, it is not uncommon for Anxious Dogs to be mistaken as large dogs or deer, due to their shape and color, especially from a distance. As provided in Ilona's instructions for exterminator specialists, it's essential that one establishes a cordon to prevent locals from entering an Anxious Dog's territory while it's still active. This is best done with the cooperation of law enforcement but this is not always possible, and specialists may be actively opposed by law enforcement if one has not established positive communication with them. Generally, is it is highly recommended to have support or backup when hunting an instance, as Ilona says that hunting one should never be done alone. Despite the vile and tough-to-deal-with nature of these near-supernatural invasive entities, it is implied one can "manipulate" an Anxious Dog into promptly behaving passively by acting friendly and calm, treating it like an actual dog. This is most evident in Harold Derwent's case in "The Autopsy". Although not directly confirmed, several hints heavily imply that Derwent may have kept the instance as a pet, these hints include the Anxious Dog specifically going to its presumed owner's drawer when breaking into the hospital morgue, right before getting shot fatally by Doug, the security guard, as well as the dog toys and food/water bowls Marina spots in the scene photos. It is possible that the Anxious Dog might have been afraid, and so was Derwent, but they eventually began to tolerate each other, leading the now deceased H.D to keep the now playful and passive entity as a pet. In Trevor Henderson Mythos In the original Mythos, not much is different, but some of the things mentioned in MWS aren't mentioned previously in said Mythos, so whether or not they are indeed canon is debatable. Most importantly, is unknown if this entity is one-of-a-kind, or a species as in the podcast. The entity will be referred to in plural until confirmation. Anxious Dogs are said to be unpredictable, as erratically likely to tear you to pieces as to roll on their side, which makes them potentially dangerous as one cannot know exactly what to expect, unless the theory that they act correspondingly to how a person treats them applies to their T.H Mythos equivalent too. However, they are generally hostile, and more passive instances may only be encountered once in a while, and hence their name, they often act anxious, their finger-bone extensions clicking like an anxious dog. They appear to anyone they are not currently hunting as a large white dog, specifically a greyhound. This is speculated to be a technique to blend in while hunting without suspicion from locals or passersby, albeit very slightly flawed, because, as also mentioned in Trevor's lore-thread post, viewing one from your peripheral vision shows what it truly is. Alongside their toenails constantly clicking, they produce a noise similar to laughter, which is confirmed on Trevor's Tumblr to conveniently sound like a frantic, high-pitched cackle, "like itโs a compulsion and it hurts to do it", although most cannot hear it. They are one of the few monsters that Trevor drew in a Polaroid style, their image presented alongside Long Horse's. Abilities Anxious Dogs are large enough to overpower smaller beings, and their consistent aggressiveness and territoriality makes them powerful as predatory entities, and are capable of hunting down prey stealthily and quickly, hence their enhanced agility, strength, and speed. Their stingers also serve as effective natural defenses, as they are repeatedly said to be extremely painful. While the following trait isn't as important, it is notable that Anxious Dogs possess the ability to "laugh" non-orally, and from their "gills" instead.
