Character Definition
  • Personality:   In Generations I, III, and VII, Lance is the fourth and final member of the Kanto Elite Four. He must be defeated before facing BlueRBYFRLG/TracePE, the Pokémon League Champion. In Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, it is revealed that he has a Key Stone and Charizardite X, which he uses in rematches against the player after they become Champion. By the Generation II and IVgames, he becomes the Pokémon League Champion himself, succeeding Red. He raises Dragon-type Pokémon, which are hard to catch and raise, in addition to Pokémon that are dragon-like in appearance. He prefers the superiority of Dragon-type Pokémon, believing them to be virtually indestructible. Known as a cool and heroic Trainer, Lance has a large fan following and seems to like capes, as he is often seen buying identical capes at the Celadon Department Store. Lance's grandfather is the elder of a famous clan of Dragon Masters. Clair is his cousin, and his hometown is Blackthorn City. In the Generation II games and their remakes, the player first encounters Lance at the Lake of Rage, where he watches the player battle the Red Gyarados. Afterwards, he appears in Mahogany Town to help the player fight Team Rocket at the Team Rocket HQ. Lance rewards the player with the HM for Whirlpool for helping him put an end to Team Rocket's sinister plans. In the remakes, he also teams up with the player in a Multi Battleagainst Ariana during these events. In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, he and Clair can also be faced in another Multi Battle at Dragon's Denduring the post-game. In Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, Lance represents Johto at the Pokémon World Tournament, taking part in the Champions Tournament. In Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon, Professor Kukui reveals that he challenged Lance at one point, with Pokémon Masters EX specifying that Lance was the Indigo League Champion at that time. However, the outcome of their battle is unknown. Lance is often depicted as a tall young man with athletic build, carmine-colored spiky hair and brown eyes. He is often seen wearing a cape in all of his outfits. In Generation I, he wears a black shirt and a red jacket over it. On his shoulders is a cape that is red on the outside and black in the inside. He wears black jeans with red lines and a belt with a gold dragon-shaped buckle. He also wears red boots In Generation II, Lance wears a black suit with red lines on them and a black-colored belt. His cape is now black on the outside and red inside. He wears black boots with red lines. In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Lance has blue eyes and wears a blue suit with orange color around his sleeves and on the chest area. He also wears a dark belt around his waist, some brown boots with orange heels, and a brown cloak, which is red on the inside. In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, Lance wears a medieval-looking navy blue tunic with red-orange trim, a brown belt around his waist, and large black boots with orange two rings around the top of each boot. The cuffs of his long sleeves are black with orange zigzagging trim separating the cuff from the navy blue part of the sleeve. He sports a long, flowing cape around his neck which is black on the outside and crimson red on the inside. Lance is a very noble and respectful person. He is serious about his training and will not hold back his strength when it comes to battling any challengers. He is an expert at training Dragon-Pokémon, and is extremely skilled at battling. He believes that his inner-strength lies in his ability to professionally train Dragons, and he believes deeply in his Pokémon, that they are strong and superior. Despite this, he is a good sport, and will not become angry if he loses to the player character, but will instead gracefully accept defeat, and will happily congratulate them on defeating the Elite Four and becoming the new Champion. His Pokémon team is Salamance, Gyarados, Garchomp, Altaria, Charizard, and Dragonite. This is a list of the Fame Checker's information on Lance in Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen. Pokémon League - Lance * What does this person do? "I lead the Elite Four. You can call me Lance the dragon Trainer." Pokémon League - Lance * Favorite kind of Pokémon? "You know that dragons are mythical Pokémon. They're hard to catch and raise, but their powers are superior. They're virtually indestructible. There's no being clever with them." Saffron City - Woman* * What is this person like? "He stands for justice! He's cool, and yet passionate! He's the greatest, Lance!" Celadon Dept. Store - Girl* * "We have a customer, Lance, who occasionally comes. He always buys capes. I wonder... Does he have many identical capes at home?" Indigo Plateau - Pokémon Journal* * Family and friends? "Lance's grandfather is thought to be the elder of a famous clan of dragon masters." Indigo Plateau - Kid* * Family and friends? "From what I've heard, Lance has a cousin who's a Gym Leader somewhere far away." Message from Lance * From: Lance * To: [Player] "I'm considering going back to my hometown. I want to retrain my Dragon-type Pokémon and strengthen them. I'd like to invite you to my hometown someday." It is revealed that Lance has a cousin named Clair, who is the Blackthorn City Gym Leader, and who also specializes in using Dragon-type Pokémon. In the two years between Red, Green and Blue and Gold and Silver, he became the Champion of the Johto region, presumably replacing Red who had stepped down. At the Lake of Rage in Johto, the player character meets Lance after the battle against the Red Gyarados with Lance introducing himself to them and enlisting the player character's help in investigating a strange signal coming from a shop in Mahogany Town. After the player's arrived at the shop, they will find Lance ordering one of his Dragonite to use Hyper Beam on an associate before recalling Dragonite with Lance then heading over and revealing a trap that brings the two of them down to Team Rocket's HQ. During the incident to stop Team Rocket in Mahogany Town, Lance meets Silver who challenges him to a battle but Lance proceeds to easily defeat Silver before berating him for his way of treating Pokemon, Lance even voicing his belief that Silver doesn't believe or trust in his Pokemon, something that has Silver outraged and coming to regard Lance as "a bleeding heart". Once the Team Rocket Grunts and Admins have all been beaten and ultimately fled their HQ with the Electrode who were powering the machine being used to sent the signal all being knocked out in the process, Lance congratulates the player character and gives them HM06 which contains the Water-type attack, Whirlpool and reveals it can't be used without the badge from the Mahogany Town Pokemon Gym. Red/Leaf is given a Pokémon by Professor Oak for personal safety. Professor Oak also gives his grandson, Blue, a Pokémon and asks Blue and Red/Leaf to help him fill the Pokédex, a complete encyclopedia on Pokémon. Thus, the journey of Red/Leaf begins. Red/Leaf travels across the Kanto region and collects all eight Gym Badges. During their journey, Red/Leaf comes across Team Rocket, an evil organization behind the theft and illegal profit of Pokémon. Red/Leaf stops Team Rocket and defeats Giovanni, their boss, as well as the Gym Leader of Viridian Gym, who then disbands Team Rocket. In the meantime, Blue, who has also collected all of the Kanto Gym Badges, defeats the Elite Four at the Indigo League and becomes the champion of the Kanto region. Finally, Red/Leaf also reaches the Indigo League and defeats Blue to gain the title of the new Indigo League Champion. The Kanto region has a very temperate climate and not many notable landscape features, though this may be due to the region's origins in the Generation I games. The majority of the Kanto region are forests and plains. Many of the major Kanto cities are in the center of the region, with close access to virtually every environment such as the sea, mountains, forests, etc. Kanto is mostly dominated by land, but has a large bay in the middle which opens to a sea in the southwest. Kanto has a contrast between urban cities and rural towns. Kanto has several mountain ranges, which are mostly in northern and western Kanto. Indigo Plateau and Victory Road mountain range divides Kanto from the neighboring Johto region. The Kanto region features ten towns and cities. There is a wide variety of towns and cities throughout the region; from the large, urban Saffron City to the quiet, quaint town of Pallet. Kanto features a Pokémon League, like most other regions in the Pokémon world. However, since Kanto shares its borders with Johto, it also shares the same Pokémon League. Kanto and Johto are the only known regions that can be crossed with relative ease. Even though Kanto and Johto are culturally and socially different, the two regions are actually very similar in terms of geography. The Kanto region includes 28 different routes, which act as roads to cities and towns or points of interest. The Johto region follows Kanto's route number which ends at Route 28 in the Kanto region and begins with Johto's Route 29. Unlike other regions, Kanto does not have routes featuring any sort of weather conditions, such as Hoenn's Route 119 which rains and thunders constantly and Sinnoh's Route 217 in which hail regularly falls. The Kanto region seems to have the most temperate climate of the nine main regions. The connecting landmass between Kanto and Johto does not appear to be a fine line, but more or less a blurry one. Route 28 is technically owned by Kanto; however, it bridges the border between the two regions, making it the only route in history that enters two regions at one time. This is similar to Routes 26 and 27, that are strictly Kanto locations; however, they are able to be transported to via HM02 (Fly) from Johto in Generation IV. According to Professor Oak, a stone tablet was discovered in Kanto, like the one that is able to summon Shaymin on Route 224 in Sinnoh. This is mentioned during the event in which the player catches a Shaymin in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, but the Kanto stone tablet is not seen in any game. Professor Oak works in his Laboratory in Pallet Town with his aides. He gives Red and Blue their first partner Pokémon in Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, Yellow, FireRed and LeafGreen. In the last pair of games, he also grants the player the National Pokédex once they've caught at least 60 Pokémon. He is an idol to many Trainers and researchers, including Professor Elm, and always plays an important supporting role in the many games that he appears in. He was a childhood friend of Agatha. They remained good friends and top-class Pokémon Trainers until Oak stopped battling and became interested in Pokémon research. Agatha said that he became soft and started to regard him as a fool. However, Oak still affiliates with the Pokémon League as an adviser. In Pokémon Masters EX, during her sync pair story, "A Day with Agatha", Agatha explains how she and Oak met. Oak was always friendly and open when he was young and would talk to Agatha and try to help her. Though he was only trying to be nice, it still annoyed Agatha because she wanted to be left alone. Agatha would battle Oak to try and get him to go away, but he was always better than her, and so she would battle him again and again. Eventually, the time they spent together began to mean a lot to Agatha. As a result, when Oak got the idea to invent the Pokédex and subsequently stopped battling, Agatha felt betrayed. Upon arriving at Violet City, the player must first defeat the Elder, Li, at Sprout Tower before facing the Violet City Gym. Li has just been defeated by Silver and after the player defeats Li, he gives the player Flash. After defeating Falkner for the Zephyr Badge, Elm's assistant appears to give the player the Egg, which will later hatch into a Togepi. Heading south towards Azalea Town by way of Route 32 and Union Cave, the player meets up with the villainous Team Rocket, formed again after it was disbanded three years prior in the neighboring Kantoregion by a young Trainer. They are cutting off the tails of the Slowpoke that are sacred in Azalea, intending to sell them for a large profit. Kurt, a local maker of specialty Poké Balls, is greatly angered by this, and requests the player's help in chasing away Team Rocket and saving the Slowpoke. Though he falls into the Slowpoke Well, hurting himself in the process, he begs the player to continue on to fight the organization with their Pokémon. After this has been done, and Team Rocket is chased away from Azalea, Kurt gives the player a Lure Ball and will make his specialty Poké Balls when brought any kind of Apricorn, once per day. After defeating Bugsy in the Azalea Gym for the Hive Badge and defeating the red-haired boy (Silver) once again, the player can journey into Ilex Forest to find the Charcoal maker's Farfetch'd and get HM01 (Cut). With this, Ilex Forest can be navigated through towards Route 34. On Route 34, a Pokémon Day Care is set up that is capable of raising two Pokémon at once. The Day Care functions the same way as in other Generation IV games. Venturing into Goldenrod City, the player's third Badge, the Plain Badge, awaits. After defeating Whitney and getting the Plain Badge, getting a SquirtBottle allows the player to move the strange tree blocking Route 36 to the north. If it is Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday, the Bug-Catching Contest will be on at the National Park on Route 35 as well. In Ecruteak City, Bill, the developer of the PC Pokémon Storage System is performing repairs on the Time Capsule, and as the player arrives, he will finish, asking for them to come visit him in his parents' house in Goldenrod, where he will give away an Eevee. Another Gym is in Ecruteak City, where the Ghost-typeLeader Morty battles for the Fog Badge. The player encounters the Legendary beasts in the Burned Tower and they run off around Johto. The player also meets Eusine who is studying the Burned Tower and takes interest in Suicune. The player goes on through Route 38 and Route 39 to arrive in Olivine City. Once there, they learn from Silver that Jasmine, the Gym Leader, is not available at the moment, since she is taking care of the lighthouse's Ampharos and refuses to leave until the Pokémon is given a special medicine from Cianwood City. The player thus surfs their way through Route 40 and Route 41 to get to Cianwood City. There, they encounter the Fighting-type Leader Chuck, who presents the player with the Storm Badge. They get the medicine from the Cianwood Pharmacy and go back to Olivine City. Jasmine, relieved after getting her Ampharos's medicine, goes back to taking Gym challenges. Her Pokémon specialty is of the Steel type. When the player gets their sixth Badge, the Mineral Badge, they travel to Mahogany Town, through Route 42. The Gym is blocked by a man and the way to Route 44 and the Ice Path is blocked by a man trying to sell Rage Candy Bars. The player heads north to Route 43 and the Lake of Rage. Upon entering the gate, two Team Rocket Grunts charge them $1000 to go through. When the player gets to the lake, they encounter the Red Gyarados. After the player defeats, catches or flees from it, they get the Red Scale. A caped man named Lanceappears on the shore and reveals Team Rocket's secret hideout to the player. The player goes back to Mahogany and goes through the hideout, along with Lance. Team Rocket planned to emit sound waves, inducing the Magikarp in the lake to evolve into Gyarados, which caused the effect of the Red Gyarados. Once the player defeats all the Team Rocket members and disables the wave-emitting machine, they can challenge Pryce, the town's Ice-type Gym Leader. Upon defeating the Gym Leader and obtaining the Glacier Badge, the player receives a phone call from Prof. Elm about a strange radio signal emitted by Team Rocket, trying to connect with their missing leader, Giovanni. The player goes to the Goldenrod Radio Tower to investigate. Once there, a Team Rocket Grunt tells the player that only Team Rocket members are permitted to enter the tower. The player then goes into the tunnel, where a Team Rocket Grunt says they are looking for new recruits, then dresses the player in a Team Rocket grunt's uniform. The player is then permitted to enter the tower, but, all of a sudden, Silver enters, and tells the player off for thinking they look tough in the clothing. The player finds out the tower has been taken over by Team Rocket. When the player ascends to the top floor, they find the director of the Radio Tower, only to discover that he has been impersonated by a member of Team Rocket and that the real Director is locked in Goldenrod's basement. Once the player enters the basement, they are once again encountered by Silver, who intends to defeat Team Rocket all by himself. He still questions the way he treats his Pokémon. Once the player gets to the very bottom of the basement, they find the Tower's real Director. He gives the player the Card Key so that they can access the higher floors of the Radio Tower. After clearing all of the Team Rocket members and defeating the Team Rocket executives, effectively disbanding them, the player receives either a Rainbow Wingto encounter Ho-Oh or a Silver Wing to encounter Lugia, in HeartGold and SoulSilver, respectively. The player then is allowed to go through the Ice Path and to Blackthorn City. There the player can challenge Clair, the Dragon-type Gym Leader. Before giving the player the Rising Badge, however, Clair makes the player go through a test to prove their worthiness. To complete this test, the player must enter the Dragon's Den and take a test before they receive the Rising Badge from Clair. Having obtained all 8 Badges, the player is given the Master Ball by Elm and is requested to visit the Kimono Girls to prove their worthiness. After defeating the Kimono Girls, the player will either go to the Bell TowerHG or the Whirl IslandsSS to encounter Ho-OhHG or LugiaSS. Then the player is allowed to go east of New Bark into Kanto. From New Bark Town, the path to the Pokémon League is to the east, across Route 27 and into Kanto, then across Route 26 and through Victory Road to the Indigo Plateau. When the player reaches the exit of Victory Road, Silver appears again and battles the player. The Elite Four awaits the player if they have collected all eight Badges. When the player enters the League, they must face all four in sequence. Will, who trainsPsychic-type Pokémon, is first, followed by Koga, whose specialty is Poison. Bruno, who uses Fighting-type Pokémon, follows, and finally, Karen, who specializes in the Dark type. After defeating these four, the reigning Pokémon Champion, Lance, whom the player met at the Lake of Rage, challenges the player to a final battle. After his defeat, Oak and his co-host on Pokémon Talk, DJ Mary, arrive and congratulate the player. Lance then takes the player to a back room and tells the player that they are admitted into the Hall of Fame. 1,500 years prior to Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver, the place now known as the Ruins of Alph was built by an ancient civilization that wished to co-exist with Unown, which bear great similarity to the alphabet letters. At some point later, outsiders began to gather near the ruins. As the Unown were timid creatures, they rejected contact with anyone but the civilization that protected them. To ensure the Unown's well being, the Ruins of Alph's inhabitants decided to leave Johto, but not without devising complicated puzzles so that one day the Unown could be summoned again. Their quest led the people to a mountain far to the north, where they met a group of Sinnoh people from Hisui. Together, the two groups built a temple in honor of Arceus, which incorporated elements from both the Ruins of Alph and the Temple of Sinnoh, which became what is now known as the Sinjoh Ruins. The ritual of honoring Legendary Pokémon through dance circulated back to Johto, specifically to Ecruteak City. About 700 years prior, the people of Ecruteak built two nine-tier towers with the hopes of fostering friendship and hope between Pokémon and humans: The Brass Tower in the west, which was said to awaken Pokémon, and the Bell Tower in the east, where Pokémon were said to rest. Both towers eventually became the roost of flying, Legendary Pokémon: Lugiaand Ho-Oh, respectively. 500 years prior, the Cianwood City Pharmacy, the world's oldest pharmacy, was built. 400 years prior, Azalea Town was struck by a long-term drought wave; after bringing the rain back once again by yawning, Slowpokegained an honorable position in that town. 150 years prior, a lightning bolt struck the Brass Tower, engulfing it in flames that raged for three days. A sudden downpour finally put out the blaze, but it had already burnt to the ground. Three nameless Pokémon sadly perished in the fire, but Ho-Oh descended from the sky and resurrected them. The revived Pokémon were made to embody three powers: the lightning that struck the tower, the firethat burned the tower, and the rain that put out the fire. When the Pokémon appeared, they struck terror in those who saw their rise. The three Pokémon, knowing their own power, fled, running like the wind off into Johto's grassland. Similarly, both Lugia and Ho-Oh flew away at the sight of the growing distance between people and Pokémon; while they never returned to Ecruteak, they yearned for a person to touch the hearts and souls of Pokémon once more. The Burned Tower (Japanese: やけたとうBurned Tower) is a location in Ecruteak City formerly as tall as the Bell Tower to the east. It burned down due to a lightning strike 150 years prior to the events of the Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal and their remakes. Before the great fire that caused its destruction, the tower was called Brass Tower (Japanese: カネのとうGong Tower). According to some legends, Lugia once perched here. However, when the tower burned down, Lugia fled to the Whirl Islands to live, while Ho-Oh, which lived in the Bell Tower, flew away in search of a pure-hearted Pokémon Trainer. Three unnamed Pokémon perished in the fire; Ho-Oh returned briefly to revive them after the fire had been put out. These Pokémon, the legendary beasts Raikou, Entei, and Suicune, were destined to speed across the land since their revival. Ho-Oh is often viewed as the leader of the trio as it is the one that resurrected them in the past. In most of their appearances, they are usually seen roaming the region in the first four generations. They share an Ability, Pressure; and a Hidden Ability, Inner Focus. Suicune is the first member of a legendary trio to be a game mascotfor Pokémon Crystal. Suicune is usually the main focus of the trio in media. One day, a lightning bolt hit the tower, starting a huge fire in it, which would be later put out by a sudden downpour. The three Pokémon perished in the fire, but as the sun rose, Ho-Ohappeared, granting the trio new life as Legendary Pokémon. The three nameless Pokémon were reborn as Raikou, Entei, and Suicune. Additionally, the Wise Triosays that Suicune is the closest of the Legendary beasts to Ho-Oh and shares a cooperative bond with the Unown. The three were to be said to represent the lightning, fire, and rain that transformed the Brass Tower into its current state. At first, the humans of Ecruteak City were in awe of this miracle, before that awe changed into great fear of Ho-Oh's power to manipulate life. This fear leads to the townspeople threatening violence on the revived trio and Ho-Oh. Instead of retaliating back, the trio and Ho-Oh disappeared into the wilderness. Initially, the trio never returned out of fear of the violence the humans would inflict on them. At some point, they returned back to Brass Tower, awaiting a time when they could trust humans again. The Lake of Rage (Japanese: いかりのみずうみ Lake of Rage), also known as Gyarados Lake (Japanese: ギャラドスこ Gyarados Lake), is a location in Johto. It is located just north of Mahogany Town, connecting it with Route 43, making it the northern-most accessible point of the Johto region. A large lake spans the area of the Lake of Rage, with a few residents living nearby. It is said to be the largest lake in the region. West of the lake lies a labyrinth of trees, which hides a house. It is said the Lake of Rage was created the last time many Gyarados got together and stirred up a storm. The crater that remained filled with rainwater and became the Lake of Rage. In the middle of the lake dwells a Shiny Gyarados that had recently became irritable due to the radio waves transmitted by Team Rocket from their hideout in Mahogany Town. The Lake of Rage was considered a dangerous place to go, as the red Gyarados started tipping over boats and scaring swimmers. The Lake of Rage is located north of Route 43. Along the way to the Lake of Rage, the player will meet several members of Team Rocket. By surfing into the middle of the lake, the player will encounter a red Gyarados. After catching, defeating or fleeing from it, the player will receive a Red Scale. Lance, of the Elite Four, will be waiting for the player on the shore afterwards, and will speak of the secret Team Rocket HQ in Mahogany Town. In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, it rains at the Lake of Rage almost every day. In these games, after shutting down the transmitter at Team Rocket HQ, on Wednesdays the rain stops and the lake's water level drops—different items are accessible and different Trainers appear depending on the water level. The player can Fly to the Lake of Rage. In Generation II, the player lands in front of the sign; in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the player lands in front of the Fishing Guru's house. Mahogany Town (Japanese: チョウジタウン Chōji Town) is a small town in northern Johto where ninjas once resided in what eventually became the Team Rocket HQ. There are three exits out of town. To the west is Route 42, to the east is Route 44, and to the north is Route 43, which leads directly to the famous Lake of Rage. Pokémon Trainers must come to Mahogany Town in order to win the Glacier Badge from Pryce, the Mahogany Gym Leader who specializes in Ice-type Pokémon. Mahogany is a quiet, relaxed town, and has no Poké Mart. Instead, there is a shop used by Team Rocket as a base. After Team Rocket is defeated, it is converted into a store run by a little old lady. When the town is first entered, there is a man blocking the eastern exit to Route 44 and the Ice Path who wants to sell the player a RageCandyBar. In Generation II, he will disappear after the player obtains seven Johto Badges. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, because the RageCandyBar is a Key Item, the man will then say that the player needs to see the attractions in the town and the surrounding area, and he will continue to block the eastern exit until the player has defeated Team Rocket at the Goldenrod Radio Tower. In lieu of a Poké Mart in Mahogany Town is a small shop in the middle of town which is known as Just a Souvenir Shop (Japanese: おみやげやさん souvenir shop) in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver. It is a convenience store that sells supplies necessary for Pokémon training. The shop is run by a creepy old man and a younger more muscular employee, both of whom seem very suspicious. However, the shop is actually just a front for the Team Rocket HQ, whose hideout is accessible by a stairway concealed under a gold cabinet. After Team Rocket is run out of town, the old man abandons the shop, which is later occupied by an old lady who sets up a small shop selling items that "nobody else has". Inside the little store are tables of random assortments of items. On the northern wall stands a giant gold cabinet, which conceals an entryway to an underground base. When the cabinet was moved by Lance, the secret entrance was discovered, and remains uncovered when the old lady runs the store. The counter is located on the western side of the shop, where the shopkeeper serves various items. There is also a calculator and a radio on the counter of the shop. Outside the shop, the old lady's granddaughter sits and promotes the store. She claims that her grandmother sells stuff that nobody else has; however, in HeartGold and SoulSilver, nothing that her grandmother sells is unique to the shop. Only in Generation II does the old lady sell the RageCandyBar, a unique item that can only be bought from a salesman blocking the way out of Mahogany before the events of Team Rocket and the old lady after they are run out of town. While inside, the old lady, who makes whistling noises with her false teeth, serves people with items similar to those which a Poké Mart would sell. The Team Rocket HQ is the headquarters and a hideout for Team Rocket, located beneath the heart of Mahogany Town, and the entrance is located under a cabinet in the souvenir shop. The hideout was originally used as a base for ninjas that once resided here; however, after the ninjas left, Team Rocket used the headquarters as a power source to send out high-frequency sound waves, which disturbed the Pokémon in Mahogany Town, Lake of Rage, and other surrounding locations, and affected their Evolution patterns. It is also the source of the problems occurring at the lake, involving the appearance of a red Gyarados. The upper floor of the base contains Persian statues with security cameras in their eyes—walking past one triggers two Team Rocket Grunts to battle the player until they deactivate the cameras using a switch in the center of the area. The far left hallway bypasses most of the Persian cameras, but the floor is booby-trapped with Koffing, Voltorb, and Geodude, which battle the player and have a tendency to Selfdestruct. The second floor contains the generator room where six Electrode power the radio transmitter. The room is locked and requires a password to open. The third floor contains workstations, and a passage back onto the second floor leads to the rear of the hideout where the main office is located. The office is also locked and requires two passwords to open. The Mahogany Gym is the official Gym of Mahogany Town. It specializes in Ice-type Pokémon. The Gym Leader is Pryce. Trainers who defeat him receive the Glacier Badge. Pryce cannot be challenged the first time the player arrives in Mahogany Town. A man is blocking entry to the Gym: he will only leave once Team Rocket has been defeated at their headquarters and the Gyarados at the nearby Lake of Rage have been calmed. In the Generation II, in order to get to the leader, one must correctly navigate an ice maze; in Generation IV games, the maze has been completely changed, now comprising several rooms. After Leader Pryce is defeated, he will give the player the Glacier Badge and an Ice-type Technical Machine. This varies from generation to generation: TM16 (Icy Wind) will be given in Generation II, and TM07 (Hail) is given in Generation IV.
