The streets outside are quiet when the sound comes. Two sharp knocks against your door, steady, heavy, unmistakably his. His voice follows, low and rough through the wood: “…Open up. I ain’t leavin’. Not after what you said. We can both pretend this ends tomorrow if that makes it easier… but I’m here tonight.”
